  1. What about Shockwave for Mozilla? on Flash 7 for Linux Released · · Score: 1

One of the biggest drawbacks of Mozilla / Firebird is that I can't see Shockwave. I have tried installing the Netscape plugin several times, and it hasn't worked. This is a problem because I am much more familiar with development in Director Lingo, rather than Flash ASP. Does anyone else have this problem?

There already is exactly what you are describing, "Interstate 76," multiplayer, single-player, car-mounted weapons. Unfortunately it is old. I had a friend who beta tested the sequel, and the development team totally ruined it.

Although I agree with other posters that say that this sounds like the rant of a spoiled little boy with too many toys, I do have one exception.

My car stereo came with a big triangular blue LED on the power button. It stays on whether the power is on or off. Although I have gotten used to it, everyone who gets in the car remarks on how distracting it is.

Worse is that the light reflects of the windshield exactly where the mirror is. So if I am looking the mirror just right, one eye is seeing a blue reflection, and the other eye is seeing the image in the mirror. More than once I've done a double take, thinking I've got a cop on my tail. Really annoying.

While I was reading this article I noticed Norton Internet Security was flashing a little icon. Guess what? A site called techreview.127.2o7.net (216.52.17.116) screenshot here was sending packages that appeared to be a Perl script overflow. Although I'm pretty sure this was a false hit (a few minutes later I got the same warning of an attack from 127.0.0.1), it's still ironic that this would happen when I was looking at an article about computer security.

It was 150 years ago that George Boole published his literary classic The Laws of Thought, wherein he devised a mathematical language for dealing with mental machinations of logic. It was a symbolic language of thought -- an algebra of logic (algebra is the branch of mathematics that uses letters and other general symbols to represent numbers and quantities in formulas and equations).

It's a sad day when the editors of Science feel they need to define what algebra is to their audience.

  21. The point is... on We Are All Nerds Now · · Score: 2, Interesting

I think a lot of people are missing the point here. People aren't becoming "nerds" because it is cool. People always were nerds, but now expressing yourself is more acceptable. If you remember the end of "Revenge of the Nerds," the point was that everybody feels awkward and unpopular, but now we have the internet. No, I don't mean that just being on the internet makes you technically proficient enough to claim to be a nerd, but it means that you can find a support network no matter how "different" you are.

Let's assume that there are 1 billion people on the internet (I know I could look up the exact number, I just don't feel like it.), and that your particular obsession only appeals to 0.00001% of the population. That still means that there are ten thousand others out there that you can relate to!

Now, the things that define a stereotypical nerd are actually much more mainstream: Computers, math, science, engineering, science-fiction, fantasy, comics, animation, books, obsession with sex, etc. So, now that people can go out on the internet and find millions of like minded people, they don't feel so bad expressing themselves publicly by buying the toys and wearing the t-shirts. The nerds have been here all along, but now they don't mind being labeled.
