  1. E-Books are like E-Jobs on Iowa College Goes Paperless · · Score: 5, Insightful

E-Books are like E-Jobs -- they don't feel "real" to most people.

Case in point -- I work for GameSpy Industries, doing writing, editing, and management. However, their offices are located in Irvine, California. This is quite a daily commute from Winnipeg, MB, Canada. The solution? Telecomutting.

However, people don't seem to quite grasp the fact that, even though I'm at home, I'm still working. My mother asks me to do housework, people say "dammit Cary, get a real job".. and I make almost 3x as much as they do at their real McJobs.

I imagine that the e-book situation is quite similar -- because there is no tactile book to hold, it isn't "real". (I've been told that, if I had to go to an office but still telecommute, then I have a real job.

  2. Pesudo-Serious Response To Flamebait on Fahrenheit · · Score: 2

It's because the US is -HUGE-. Do you have any idea how much effort it would take to make a country of approximately a bajillion people (I say approximately because I'm too lazy to look up the real number)? Tons.

Then you have attitude problems... did you see the huge fuss that everybody kicked up when the US Government was announcing that they were thinking about moving to multicoloured currency? Same idea.

  6. Yes! on The AudioGalaxy Story · · Score: 4, Insightful
Because the indexing worked so well, that meant you could queue up a song and the system had a good idea of where to find it. It would look for someone who had a file with the same artistID/songID pair, and then alert the two clients to begin the transaction. Once you began downloading a particular file, it would make sure you would only get the file with that specific file size/check sum. Doing it this way also allowed the satellites to resume easily and transparently. It was awesome to jump on the web site before you went to bed, queue up a few hundred songs, and when you woke up in the morning most of them were there. You didn't have to care about who had the songs, it did that for you. I can't stand having to micromanage my downloads, having to pick 5 different versions of a file to assure myself of getting one of them. Some of the newer p2p apps are much better at this, but still none can compare.
YES! This is, by far, what made AudioGalaxy so much better then Gnutella, OpenNap, KaZaa, FastTrack, and any of the others. The result of the above feature is that you could find the rarest stuff out there, because the system would automatically start transfering the song when it found a host.

Does anybody know of any other applications which operate in a similar manner?

And that's NOT including the ungodly 7% PST (Provincial Sales Tax) and 7% GST (Goods and Services Tax) which get tacked on to the sticker price.

    $89.99 + 14% = $102.59

And that isn't even for the collector's edition. No wonder piracy is so rampant. Screw you, Blizzard. I'm going to wait until the title drops to AFFORDABLE levels.

Of course, we know that Blizzard just inflated the price because they know people will pay it. Grr.

  11. Canadian Money on Matrix Reloaded Filming Wants to Shut Sydney Down · · Score: 2, Offtopic
The Canadian government recently released new versions of our $5 and $10 bills, which contain three security features to combat counterfitting:
    1. Microtext (really really small writing that can't be photocopied and would be quite difficult to just "print out")
    2. Watermarking (if you hold one of the new $5s or $10s under a black light, you'll see a rather complex watermark on both sides of the bill)
    3. Brail (yes, brail -- the new Canadian bills are readable by the blind. I'm still not sure how the brail stays.. uh.. braily with all the handling that money receives, but it does.)

The comics were violent, therefore the movies will be too. There isn't any real GORE in the film (our webslinging friend gets a cut at one point and bleeds a little), but there is violence. (Stuff blowing up, etc.)

Not to mention that the Green Goblin is downright SCARY. It rocks.

But, over all, I don't think I'd have a problem letting a 4 year old see the film if they can handle some tension and a few surprises.

... is that the hiring process, in most cases, doesn't include determining if the candidate can actually DO THE JOB. (That is, do they have enough experience?)

Case in point: Here in Winnipeg is a company called "Convergys" -- they do tech support for several ISPs throughout North America. One of my friends recently got a job there doing phone-based technical support for Shaw. Now, this individual knows computer basics, but has NO clue what a router is, what IP tables are, DNS servers...

Most places hire people based on "can you read from this script?", which simply isn't adequate.

I'm a gamer, and a professional one at that. I love games. I play them every single day, be it a PC title, or PS2, or Xbox, or whatever. In fact, I run a website devoted to the stuff, and get paid EXCELLENT money to do it.

I conducted a survey a while back on said site and the average age of the visitor was between 18 and 27 years of age -- college students. I don't know any 13 year olds who are going for a BSC at Harvard. =)
