  1. Re:NTP gurus wanted... ? on Computer Network Time Synchronization · · Score: 1

I read about NTP via O'Reilly's crab-book, I think. Either that, or it was the de facto Systems Administration Handbook, which I keep giving away to people. For keeping a set of servers in sync. Generally, I just populate /etc/ntp/step-tickers and restart, but it has been made easy over the years.

I understand that I can have a GPS, and plug it into my host, that I can use NTP to distribute the time from there to my local network. I haven't had a GPS to dedicate to that purpose yet, but I found NTP interesting. I don't do any realtime things yet. This book would be interesting to read, and to brandish from the office bookshelf.

  14. Take back *our* Internet. on The Future of the Internet · · Score: 1

Perhaps it is time to take back *our* Internet, and more importantly, *MY* Internet. While I am only a generic sysadmin, and not Vinton Cerf, I did help build the Internet in what it is today. I worked at ISPs, webshops, and software huts. I took care of Internet customers. I told everyone how useful the Internet was. I posted to Usenet, sent emails, published videos, toyed with mashups, and other things. I helped make the Internet work, even if only in a teensy tiny small way.

I want to continue to experiment with everything Internet. I want to post, and send email, and publish. A tiered Internet would not make that financially possible for me, if I have to have two or three colocations to publish my stuff. Or, by not being an approved corporation that is allowed to reach certain network endpoints, how do I reach my intended audience?

So I suggest that the Internet's users take back what is rightfully theirs, and ours, and more importantly to me, mine. We can build our own infrastructure, which some groups have already started doing. Go get some wireless gear. Learn about it. Go wardriving. Have fun at a Wi-Fi shootout. Know the geeks in the area. I think the best way to take back our Internet, is to own a larger piece of it. I think the only way this can happen, is if there are more of us interested in wireless networking -- enough of an interest to start taking this more seriously.

Boy do I wish I were a better salesman sometimes.

  15. Go Figure. on IT Certification Less Important Now? · · Score: 1

I started out a little more than 10 years ago, with BSD, and the old Cisco and Livingston routers. I didn't know much about certification. Microsoft started doing their certification program shortly after that, and I don't know when Cisco started.

Over the years, I've thought about getting myself RH or Cisco certified, and then thought better of it. I've seen people with Cisco certifications that couldn't route themselves off a one NIC host. I've met other certified people that didn't understand variable-bit subnet masks.

I don't think not having these certs has hindered me, as I don't generally work for the types of places that have that as a requirement. I think not having a college education hinders me a little bit, though, but I tend to not work for those places, either.

Actually, GP is showing initiative by suggesting you contact an American worker, rather than an unauthorized immigrant. Seems to me that he's looking for work, and inviting you to call him.

    2. When presented with a problem, does the applicant find a general solution, or is he/she looking for a temporary shortcut?

Temporary shortcut. (You know what's faster? Hiring an American)

Doesn't that seem like a permanent solution -- hiring a local employee?
