I don't think most of the people are doing it for the money. I am guessing that most groups are going to spend close 10 million to win the prize. The big problem I see is that I am not sure if doing suborbital flight like this is going to get us any closer to a real prescence in space. It is cool that they are pushing for fast turn around and the like but I am not sure if that is the same as getting cheap access to space. The xprize is forcing one point of view (reuse) while it might be more efficient to leave more mass in orbit. Refurbishing can be really expensive. Cheap access is probably dependant on some revolutionary breakthrough. Most of the ideas that I have seen are just rehashes of 50-60s NASA ideas. The math didn't work for most of them and while material science has improved enought to make some of them work, they will never be cheap.

Dividends are also a very tax inefficient mechanism since 1996( don't quote me on that year) when the tax laws dealing with capital gains were changed. Since you pay have the tax ( 31-39 vs 20 for most people), you don't want your company paying dividends. Up until the law change you lost out of componding ( ie you had to pay taxes every year) but the rate was the same. As an investor, it is a lot better for you for the company to buy back stock (raises the value of the stock) and let you decide when you want to pay taxes. The only really good things about dividends is as one investor says "They are a lot harder to fake than earnings."

Yeah americans are just like linux users. Instead of using a technology like windows that the rest of the world is using, they have to go off and invent there own OS just to be recalcitrant and obstinant. Even it is technological superior wouldn't everyone be better off if we all used the same system? More seriously GSM and CDMA are basically washes technology wise. Both have advantages and disadvantages ( but you will notice the 3g(not gprs) version of GSM is very similiar the CDMA technology. ) . The big issue as always is who gets the money. The royalties for GSM and CDMA are about hte same for a 3rd party company but someone like Nokia does much better with GSM since they have half the patents. The big problem with the US wireless market is multiple carriers. Each carrier spends a ton of money in each big market duplicating each others effort. If they could have worked together (major handwaving) you could have 3x the capacity in the dense areas and in the low coverage area you could have covered 3 times the area for the same net expendure.
