I've heard it said before but no answers yet... What are you supposed to do for boot floppies? Burning CDs is one good option, but requires a CD burner and a working high-level OS. Can BIOSes boot off of USB keys?
This prevents the US from allowing a free hand to private enterprise in space for US based companies, because according to the Convention the US government accepts full responsibility for damages caused.
And so it should. Listen. If some commerical launch goes wrong, do you honestly believe that any business will have the money to clean it all up? I mean if it hits a population center we're talking about some crazy cash. The government would have to bail them out, no question.
The whole notion of a corporation is 'limited liability'. The idea was concieved to encourage exploration of the New World when the loss of a ship could completely bankrupt the financial backers. That's what the 'Ltd.' stands for. Limited liability means if something goes real bad then "Super Space, Ltd." pull a Chapter 11 and the people in the crater are SOL.
Given the track record of other companies engaging in activities that hold a great risk due to failure, e.g. nuclear plants, I highly suspect that the profit would be privatized but the risk left in the hands of the government.
If the Virgin Cola spaceship fails on re-entry and craters into something valuable I highly doubt that the company and insurers will end up footing the bill...
Or how tons of the food they eat is grown on fields fertilized with pig/cow shit. It's fertilizer, get it hot enough to kill the bugs and that's that...

In all seriousness, I am so impressed with Mr. Schroeder's government in many respects. At least from an international perspective he seems to be doing a great job.

KDE 3.1 Released

· Score: 4, Informative
KDE 3.1 was released late last night, ~7:30PST. The Slashdot editors waited overnight for the mirrors to pick up the new release before posting the announcement!
What a nice thing to do. Konsider it for your new kpolicy!
Nice troll. The core of my post was that the crowd booing, interruptions, and catcalling were removed in transcripts, yet, "audience applauds" were left in. I'm sure that previous presidents have had similar revisionist recordings, but none ever needed them more than W.
Re: me making fun of people with speech impediments (or people who aren't cunning linguists, as you say), the man is the President of the United States of America. Since his job is basically to look good on camera and read speeches, it would be less embarassing if he could do it properly. Heh.
I wonder if they'll dub out all the booing and catcalling during W. Bush's speeches in the immediate aftermath of the Enron scandal? They removed them in the typewritten transcripts, as well as corrected some of his more shameful grammar and pronunciation. Re-writing history, without even waiting more than a few minutes! Wow.
I apologise for not providing a link as I'm at work right now and can't post long. Maybe some other kind reader will?
Contrariwise, when I was volunteering for the Kingston Green Party (Ontario (Canada)) doing public awareness work about herbicide/pesticide issues the local paper recieved numerous pro-chemicals letters from 'concerned citizens'.
Upon closer inspection we discovered that they were industry astroturfers mailing in from out of town. They were writing pro-pesticide letters to any local paper that was covering the issues.
This leads me to believe that this type of misrepresentation goes on all the time. I would be in favor of any technology that would either allow editors to check on the legitimacy of letters or, if they were not so inclined, at least aid after-the-press detective work.

Wow, a realistic war game! I suppose they didn't intend the irony...
Canadians clearly have access to the American media channels online.
Rule number one: don't make assumptions! Last time I was on the phone with cafepress.com (who still haven't gotten my 2-month-old order delivered) I was asked, "You guys have a postal system, right?"
Heh. Just cause it's a true story, don't getcher back up.

And sitting around snarkily posting to Slashdot is indeed sensible?

Or, for a less familiar frame of reference, 0.9% of the number of Afghan civilians directly killed by US bombs, not counting starvation deaths due to halted foreign aid caravans during the bombing.
Still truckin'...

Let's give those poor and grouchy folks something to dream of! What's a few billion more?
* true! That's more than $1000/US citizen/year... You may not be paying that tax today, but your kids will pay for it somehow.
