The cameras are useless and I can take or leave the games but the ability to look up infomation on line is a really usefull adjunct to a mobile phone and shouldn't be underestimated.
There's hardly a day passes when I don't use my phone for such mundane things as looking up on a train timetable, or checking the weather forcast. The google WAP portal (http://www.google.com/wml) is very well implemented and an excellent source of information for settling drunken arguments or cheating in pub quizzes....(how many Zs are there in quizzes?)
I've never come across a built in FM tuner on a piece of portable kit that was any more than an afterthought. If you're serious about listening to radio on the move you really need something like a radio walkman. The Sony one that I have is so small you hardly know you are carrying it but the reception is excellent. Lesser portable radios will just piss you off in the long run.
In fact WMA has a lossless mode. But unfortunately I can't tell you how well it compresses compared to FLAC because - "Windows Media Lossless is only available on select versions of Windows." (my italics)
The problem of spam is nothing like an omelette (although a spam omelette might be nice!)
Iraq is nothing like an omelette.
People are nothing like eggs.
Sorry your analogies don't hold up.
I was stupid enough to be duped into clicking a link to that page once. I don't even like to think about it to be honest. I couldn't find the reset button fast enough! ever since I am reluctant to follow any link on slashdot - just in case.
It is a valid example of evil javascript code but there must be less disgusting examples that you could link to.
Basicaly I can't see any good reason to post that particular link.
Also for it to be worth while the error in the MSB must be less than the value of the LSB i.e. 1 part in 2,147,483,648. (~= 0.0000000466 %). This might be what the other poster meant by a "true" CODEC.
I pity anyone crossing the road near a hill top if you are driving nearby. A blind hill top constitutes a hazard - You're supposed to take that into account and slow down as appropriate. As a basic rule you should drive at a speed that allows you to stop within the distance you can see to be clear.
Don't forget that one of the most important components of any HiFi system is the human brain. I suspect that this is the only component that is actually affected by higher sample rates and sizes, oxygen free cables and wotnot.
It's an interesting point (If only I had mod points) but I suspect technological progress will put a spanner in the works. The whole idea lossy compresion will probably be obsolete in the not too distant future.
Standards bodies and the open source community should perhaps skip a generation and be ready with a standards based implementation of lossless encoding with integrated DRM as soon as the market is ready for it.
One of the more anoying features of media player is that as soon as you put an audio CD into the drive it instantly starts to rip it to WMA format without even asking for permision. Of course you can turn this off if you take the trouble to do so; but I suspect that most average PC users actually like this "convenient" feature.
PC Users default to Windows, Windows defaults to MediaPlayer and MediaPlayer defaults to WMA. IMO any portable player that does not support WMA is cutting off a large section of the market.
Theres an on line (java) version of the game here. Be warned there is no save game facility but It's a nice bit of nostalgia. There are plenty of full walk throughs available on the web and it's interesting just to follow it through to recapture sone of the feel of the computer games of yore.
I think the point is that for a given bit rate the MP3 (or other lossy compression based format) will always be superior to a PCM file at the same bit rate - assuming they are both taken from a superior quality master or from a live source.
So if you are going to create a file for distribution from a 24bit, 96KHz master and your choice is between 1.4 Mb/s PCM or 1.4Mb/s MP3 then the MP3 would be better. Wouldn't it?
In fact you could probably have a 24 bit, 96KHz MP3 instead of a crapy 16 bit, 44.1 KHz PCM file.
Disclaimer -- I have no idea if any of this is actually correct or even feasable

won't be available in the UK then

Unless you'r programming internet expoorer in which case grey = green!
what a bunch of jerks.
If ISPs started charging $.01 for every piece of email sent the problem would soond be reduced to manageable proportions

I'd be interested to know how you knew that.
somebody always posts this whenever the subject of pop ups comes round again (and again and again...yaaawwwwwnnnnnnn.) It's an on topic troll.

I totally aggree. It's almost as bad as those sites run by L33T Hax0rs that won't let you in if your OS is Windows or your browser is IE.
You are a bit paranoid.
Wasn't that in "the man who wasn't there"?

"Chicks" indeed!
Badges? We don't need no stinking Badges!

Slightly OT but I particularly liked the collapsible shoes that the alien troops used to absorb the shock of landing on thier feet.
So does that make HP Apple's puppet?
wasting a blank CD is hardly efficient
