RE:ssentially 640x240 at 60 fps (NTSC; PAL is a bit more resolution at 50 fps). Yes, NTSC is roughly 640x480 resolution, but it's interlaced -- you don't have to draw half the screen every frame and you're foolish if you think the console games are doing so when they don't need to. If you change to a progressive scan picture then you're immediately at twice the work that needs to be done. Bump it up to a 720p 4:3 and you're nearly quadrupling the effort from there (or nearly 8x as much as a SD screen). Widescreen requires even more work. And remember, a 720p 4:3 image still has less resolution than a 1024x768 (XGA) monitor and only needs to run at a paltry 60 fps.

You need to understand that NTSC is actually 720 x 480 at square pixels with just a little lost to overscan. And 60fps is NOT Frames Per Second but Fields per second wich interlace to 29.97 FRAMES.

WHOOPS... This guys post was OBVIOUSLY flame-bait (which it seems I Bit on) since his BS numbers about resolution in NTSC are wrong or based on faulty math, I have found the AVS forum can sometimes be information overload or of little actual help. Of Course, the HD format is so bloated, most sales people in even boutique home theater retailers don't have full understanding and engineers cant speak english anyway (and FORGET about asking the schmuck at BEst Buy, they just want to sell you a warranty and don't know JACK about any of the product).

This post does have some usefull info though (specifically the bit about gun games) so my 'Flame-bait' comment may be a bit off.

Basically, don't overthink your purchase since the current generation of consoles (except XBOX) don't really support progressive anyway, and most TV is broadcast Standard Def anyway. And since digital TV offers higher resolution OR more channels, don't expect broadcasters to just switch to Hi-Def, since they can increase revenue by partitioning their digital channel to 4 or 5 standard def feeds instead of one Hi-Def one.

  8. Re:Quick summary. on Videogames, HDTV and Widescreen 16:9? · · Score: 1

as this EXCELLENT post was PS2 specific, I will elaborate a bit on some XBOX specifics (I do not own a ps2, but that is not to say I don't enjoy playing ps2 titles at friends houses)...

The xbox graphic sub system renders all games progressive scan, so there is no frame rate loss for progressive. 99.9% of XBOX titles display 480p (to my knowledge, only 'kung-fu chaos' displays interlaced on a progressive display due to it's use of interlacing for some graphic tricks.) As for Higher resolutions, see the aformentioned GTA3 box set for 720p, as well as Tony Hawk titles and Sould Caliber II in 720p (but I think Soul Caliber II had an issue where it was NOT widescreen at that res, not sure). 'Enter The Matrix' utilized 1080i and widescreen(GLORIOUS!!!) even still, the gameplay was sucky overall. The recent 3d Dragon's Lair was the first 1080i title. My Mitsubishi 48" rear projection HD doesn't support 720p (just 480i, 480p, and 1080i) as is common in sets of past year (purchased Dec 2002). 720p actually takes a beefier subsystem to display properlly (1080i is basically 540p on each of the 2 fields, I leave the full explanations to better sources) so it is only now that 720p display is finding it's way into the near $2000 market.

So, long story short, XBOX is geared to displaying 480p for any title with no performance hit, software must be designed to display 720p or 1080i and while most support widescreen, it isn't always even mentioned in the documentation (yeah, sometimes I read them).

It has been my experience that most are in fact widescreen (Halo), but frustratingly, most (with notable exceptions being Tony Hawk 4) still split the screen so that player 1 is top and player 2 is bottom (I would prefer a mandate that all games allow you to choose the split like 'twisted metal' did on the PS1).

As to the other issues... XBOX does NOT support progressive scan output of DVD titles, nor is the dashboard progressive scan (weird and frustrating) so DVDs look pathetic on it compared to HBO's Hi-def broadcasts (Spider-Man on HBO Hi-def RUINED the DVD experience [on XBOX] for me, like watching VHS tapes again after that!) and I pay WAY too damn much for Full package Digital Cable to get 1 Hi-def HBO, Hi-def ESPN, 3 Local Broadcast ABC, CBS, NBC Hi-defs (which usually suck anyway) and 2 surprisingly good Hi-def channels from inDemand called, strangely enough, INHD and INHD2. That equalls $75 a month for 7 channels and 150 other channels my wife watches when Friends or 'Mad about you' is on them, btw Analog and standard def television, even delivered through a Digital box Suck worse than the RIAA, especially when blown up over 45". My next investment will be a high end PROGRESSIVE scan DVD player.

I am looking forward to trying Wolfenstein with her in co-op, and she will OWN you punk asses when Halo 2 hits next year.
