Ok, but there's nothing wrong with working a 9 to 5 job to make a decent living, so you can play weekend tours on the side, and hope to get a little cash and exposure. You don't have to be the next Green Day or Metallica to taste success. Every time someone buys a CD or a shirt you've been succesful.
I feel you on the band member situation. I've been lucky to play with the same guys for over 10 years, but I know all the horror stories.
I gave up on joining the big leagues a long time ago, and it doesn't bother me. The quarterly cdbaby check is meager, but I have a real job...stay away from that 99 cent menu!
In Cupertino, Steve Jobs pulled the plug on the iPhone product merely weeks before launch. Slahdot user Maynard needed to annotate PDFs, and the iPhone did not meet his exacting standards. PDF annotation immediately became the number one priority of Nokia, Motorola and Microsoft, as the billions to be reaped with this killer app would surely fill the bottom line with boulders of gold.
I was about to dispute that the "plus" albums cost the same, but it looks like you're right. Instead, it seems that a whole lot more albums are $12 rather than $10. What's up with that? The remastered Rust in Peace from Megadeth is $11.99. That's getting even closer to the Target/Best Buy price. I would have bought it at $9.99.
This was the same story for CDR, DVDR, etc. Eventually, a spindle will be available for 12 bucks at Fry's. I am hoping it's not a long wait, this kind of storage will be great for those of us who make frequent backups of our home directories.
"Four Thirds is not an open standard, however, as it does not meet the "allowing anyone to use" criteria commonly accepted as the definition of an open standard."
No Divx, either on disc or streamed. I hated the streaming features anyway, the rewind/forward is a pain. Get a cheap DVD player that supports DIVX, I have an Oppo but there are cheaper options, I think Philips makes one. Burn your files on a DVD/CD or copy to memory stick and watch, with much better responsiveness.
You know who's guilty of using crappy MS streaming media? None other than NPR.org. You have 2 choices - Windows Media or Real. How's that for crappy choices.
I evaluated Vista on a mild machine - Dual Core Pentium D, Intel 950 graphics, 1 GB memory. Surprisingly, 50% of my system memory was being used by Windows and Aero. That was pretty much all I needed to know that I was sticking with XP for a little while longer.
Your post is probably the only real insightful commentary I've seen on the Apple TV from any source. To further add to the thought process, imagine the following setup - mac or pc with torrent client connected to tvrss.net feeds...torrent client automatically saves the shows into the iTunes video library...Apple TV is loaded with the forementioned DIVX hack... voila. The cable company has been fired.
I've never been a huge Microsoft fan, but the Xbox 360 is a home-run. Great online integration, great controllers, connect360 on the mac and I get my iTunes library streaming through! Plus direct iPod support, I can just plug it in to the USB port and play my MP3s. Good stuff. I wish everything MS made was as good as the Xbox!
I got the impression that the information on the flash won't be written to often. It will be used at boot time, therefore won't change much, unless you change the startup sequence.
There are already financial programs in place to encourage potential teachers, but they avoid union wrath by being add-ons rather than base pay incentives. Some teachers get loan reprieves, grants (that go into teacher's pockets, etc). I don't side with the unions on this, but they are very powerful, and districts are sidestepping base pay in favor of these extras. Currently these extras are available for teaching inner city schools, etc. I don't see why they can't so the same for much needed academic subjects.
I have this box, and if this is one of the best options, I'm aghast. I can't even direct tune to channel 2 in HD. (known bug, apparently never fixed). Its a great unit as far as outputs go, but the DVD player won't play burned discs, and the channel tuning is very slow. On the plus side, commercial DVDs look significantly better than the Oppo thru DVI (I have both players), and it remembers where you left off on the DVD, which the Oppo won't do. Ugh, I can't wait to get a mac mini with an el gato tuner.
I'm in an independent band, and we sell 2 albums on iTunes. We would switch to DRM-free in a second. I think Stebe is really getting the ball rolling here, and I applaud him for that. It must irk him that some people label him the bad guy, and he's basically saying he's tied down due to contracts and only public opinion (and the $$$ that ensues) will change the big 5 label's minds.
On an offtopic note for a quick sec, the best company on planet earth is CDbaby.com. They got Los Creepers on iTunes, and keep very little of the money, even though they are the standard gateway for independent bands to get on iTunes. Please support them if you can!
If I were interested in buying a PS3 (I'm not), I wouldn't be able to get one. I live in Southern California, and have never seen one on a shelf. I've heard anecdotes of people seing a ton at a best buy somewhere, but I just haven't seen this. I shop regularly at Fry's, Target, Best Buy, Costco, etc. I've never seen one in stock. Maybe they'd sell more units if they could get them out the door.
Slightly offtopic I know, but my I bought a little app for the Treo called Card Export, and it turns the Treo's SD card into a plain jane mass storage device. USB only, but it's saved me a few times. Combined with a retractable cable, its a nice plus for the phone.
(I read this on macrumors I think) - Cingular had to improve their network capability to handle the iPhone. Simulatenous conference calling with EDGE going, voicemail identification, etc. If I'm not mistaken, these features wouldn't work without the improvements Cingular put into place.

All those people saw it and no one took a moment to use a cell phone camera to take a pic? Sure a cell phone camera doesn't prove or disprove anything, but at least we could take more guesses as to what was actually seen. I keep waiting for photos of this to appear, but none have surfaced AFAIK.
I totally agree. I spent about $500 bucks on a refurbished Infocus X1 and it was astonishing how good the picture quality is on that little DLP unit. And get this, the X1 downscales HD, to 480p. I ended up retiring it because my new house doesn't have the space, but I miss that little unit.
I did want to make one comment on the parent post - technically it is true that a DLP projector gives you perfect black by shutting off the pixel, however there are other variables that make it less than perfect - ambient light and the white surface you're shining the light on. Anyone remember a slashdot post a few years back about a new tech - a black screen for projectors? I wonder what happened to that project.

Cheap Inkjets? "Nothing for you to see here. Please move along." Has never been so appropriate!

If you have a treo, download LedOff. It's donationware, and solves the LED annoyance.

Check out the parent post....Slashdot has become self aware! Unplug it!

You don't know what you're talking about.

Bah, wake me up when there's a salad tossing fridge.

Your post is even funnier if you read it out loud in the Simpson's "Comic Book Guy" voice.
