I use a service called Mailshell. It lets you use a email@myaccount.mailshell.com email address, so I know who sells my info. The big surprise? Most everyone is pretty good about it. I was getting spam from a kazaa email adress, so I told Mailshell to automatically dump those messages in the trash, and I never see them. It's a great service.
If you didn't even have the equipment to try sound editing on Linux, then your opinion isn't really worth jack.
That's exactly my point - I have an industry standard 24 bit / 96k soundcard. It is listed as supported by ALSA, but it won't make a sound. I'm a music guy, not a unix geek.
And actually my opinion might be very valuable to someone who produces music and is interested in Linux. All I can say is, don't format your windows partition just yet. This program looks intersting, although the interface is butt-ugly (we can forgive that), and Audacity is a glorified Windows Sound Recorder (I could never get VST's working, although I do love the native MP3 support, after you jump through some hoops). My major point- you can make some great pro-quality recordings on your Windows computer relatively hassle-free and cheaply, too.
I've been doing audio production work for a couple years using Windows 2000, Nuendo, Amplitube, This incredible $139 gadget, using only
this inexpensive audio card. I don't get blue screens of death, my hardware is fully supported, etc. I run a second HD with Red Hat 9 (and incidentally, the awesome Ximian Desktop), and I can't even get my sound card to work. I love Linux, but no serious musician will be using the penguin for audio production for at least a few more years.
Set these up in cubicles outfitted with mouse, keyboard and displays. People can work at any desk at any time, even in a conference room. And take it home and keep working! An exec's dream come true. I would say it could use some type of built-in display, maybe one of those new foldable displays we heard about yesterday.
The one thing he didn't mention was that during the benchmarks, the G5's were also parallel processing computations on the most painful wretched hideous punishments, to be bestowed upon the web server admin who fucked up and released the G5 specs days too early. The numbers are coming in, and it won't be pretty.
I play guitar and sing in a punk band (think Bad Religion meets Social D). It's a funny thing, the ratio of software developers to musicians is quite high in my experience. One of the people at my job thinks musicians make great software developers because we like to build something from nothing, using established rules and syntax. Ok so I sound like a geek, but i really have 2 lives, one at work and one at home. Except when I'm at home I rarely think about work.
If you're doing anything heavy-duty externally, use firewire. USB, whatever flavor, is a bad choice because is host intensive (CPU heavy) and relies on a communication method that is inferior to firewire. Think Carouseling around between devices, versus a direct connection in the case of firewire.
Use USB for your mouse and scanner, for anything heavier use firewire whenever possible.
I have songs from back in the napster days, and the funny thing is how the stuff from Kazaa tends to not self destruct.
On another note, this stuff makes me feel good about the iTunes music store strategy and who knows, in the internet2 future might we have the iMovie *Movie* Store?
Actually this is the sixth version of the house of the future. In every house, 99% of people refuse to believe in the Microsoft future. Of those 99%, there is always one anomaly, or "The One". The One wanders the house looking for Bill Gates (known as the architect), hoping to get his questions answered. The One has used Microsoft's Internet Blender, Windows Media Faucet and Office Ice Maker, but always knows, in the back of his mind, that something is not quite right.
I'm in a band, and we give our music away for free, but that should be the choice of the copyright holder, and nobody else.
We can debate this back and forth forever. I agree that downloading CD quality music I did not buy is and should be illegal. If you're doing something shady, agree to the fact that you might get caught amd there might be consequences. And you don't get to set your own punishment.
With Walmart's track record in "mature" movies and video games, I have to wonder whether they will carry unrated and NC-17 movies in their original versions, or employ a Blockbuster type policy where the studio must make movies fit "Rated R" or below.
I've been pretty happy with Netflix, and I naturally distrust a company with shameless business practices like Walmart. Search google for "Walmart Sweatshops" if you're curious.
How would you feel if you bought a V8 Buick, took it home, opened the hood and discovered a 6 cylinder motor? And what if you complain, they promise a new motor within 2 weeks, and you never get the upgrade? I'd be first in line to sue.
If you can stand it, get an Apex player. There's a hack to remove macrovision on some units (check google) and they play MP3's, JPEGS, and anything else under the sun. I did have a problem playing DVD-RW, but DVD-R works great.

Am I the only one who hates image resizing? I like full size pr0n, thank you.
The pornographic implications of iChatAV are mind-blowing!

Mod down and Flame away, but I'll be brave...

Did you see this one?
325039: Turned off the groaning sound when Internet Explorer visited "Slashdot.org".

But will it still play Burgertime?

The case is engineered well, but from the crowd reaction in Glendale, it's not a 10 in the looks department. I was shocked at how utalitarian it is.

My free time was eradicated by a shareware game by the name of Snood.
No, No, No, Don't you learn anything?
SCO sucks.

.."..rampant with Rob Malda's homosexuality.."
Were you just checking to see if we were paying attention? Or did the speed of the 970 seriously mess you up?
Apparently, nobody realized that All American movies were banned in Egypt right after "Dude, Where's My Car?"

I know they're from the same web site but Google will find you more examples.

Why should software be any different?
I wasn't aware that AC/DC was involved in software development till now.
It's a good thing I've got a life, otherwise I'd be pissed.
