I played for a couple of years... but man... what's the point?
Well, this may be a shot in the dark, but maybe, just maybe, people find the various grinds in the game to be...fun? Far too many people get caught up in the constant gear and leveling treadmill to really focus on what should be the goal of the game - enjoying yourself.
On a related note, this system is more or less a direct copy of LotRO's deed system. There's a running commentary on it right over over at the LotRO forums.
Apparently you've been missing the Diggification of/. Rampant slashvertisements, blog rolls, and even shit from the Idle section has been showing up on the front page.
On the other hand, I can't believe that no one has yet mentioned Penny-Acade's On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness, which was just recently released. It's also selling rather well, from what Gabe and Tycho have said so far.
While this may be true in most cases, there are those voice actors for games who really stand out. Steve Russel and Terry Brosius from Looking Glass Studios always did superb work, and I always knew the voice acting was going to be top notch whenever I saw them listed on a game. More recently, Patrick Stewart and Sean Bean did some superb voiceovers for Oblivion.
Then again, I'm probably an anomaly, since I've never seen a movie simply because a certain actor was in it.
For what it's worth, the two times that I've emailed my congressman (Rick Boucher), each time I've gotten back emails that have addressed each of my concerns. Though I can't say if it was Boucher himself or perhaps a secretary, at the very least I know it was read.
His point is that as paying customers, we DO ultimately decide the direction of these things. If they suddenly lose 40% of their subscribers due to this, you can bet they'll be kicking DV to the curb faster than you can say Crey Biotech.
That being said, I'll see how this plays out. If you RTFA, the ads as shown really aren't obtrusive at all, and contribute to the feel of the game in the same way that the current fake ads do.
I think what we're seeing here is less of an issue of US news introversion and more of an issue with the general American populace not being interested in what happens outside their country's borders.
Considering that Google is based in the USA, is there any reason why they would even need the EU's approval for something like this? Perhaps the article could clear that up. I'll go check that righ--oh, wait....
Even though AD&D was my first PnP experience, I've liked each release less after 2nd Ed. It seems at though every time they try to further the pigeon-holing of classes into certain roles, not unlike MMOs. This edition is no different, even going so far as to actually define these roles - controller, defender, leader, striker (CoH deja vu). As it is, it looks likes D&D is going to remain the system of choice of those who are more interested in flexing the system to make ungodly powerful characters, rather than interesting ones.
I currently have my WoW account terminated. Instead, I've been spending my gaming time playing a heavily-modded (read: boobies) version of Oblivion. As I've said before, I would kill for a multiplayer version of Oblivion. Multiplayer, not MMO. Having spent nearly three years of my life playing various NWN RP servers, I think such a setup would be ideal for the game.
MMOs stopped being fun for me once I realized how shallow the gameplay felt compared to my other, non-MMO games.
Though it's not quite television, I've found NPR to cover both sides of the spectrum fairly evenly. Best of all, you can simply listen to it while using your eyes for more productive things.
They are coming out with an equivalent cockroach version in a couple of months. The next generation "fruit fly" model is expected to be available in late 2010.
Christmas at the age of 5, a shiny new Nintendo sitting under the Christmas tree, the bundle that included the Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt combo, complete with gun. To this day, I can still imagine the smell of the styrofoam and plastic it was housed in, which never fails to remind me of that Christmas when I smell something similar.

Tycho and Gabe have a pretty good idea about why you're seeing so many 10s...

Sorry, hands were still sticky at the time.
Original, of course.
I feel your pain. I too have problems with my hands swelling after excessive amounts of masterbation.
You haven't seen many Japanese game shows, have you?

We see how well that's worked with Microsoft...

1.) Upgrade servers.
Is that you? We've missed you!

So where is the Shakespeare or Bach of gaming?
Unfortunately, Looking Glass Studios closed their doors several years ago.

You can see the initial prototype here.

Whatever. Will someone just shoot this guy already?
Don't be alarmed, everyone. That's just the video games talking.
I prefer this version, myself.
I think I just had a geekgasm from just reading the title.
