    Thats gotta be some scary shit if you're a soldier in Iraq, imagine a robot with a shotgun walking up to you yelling "DIE EVIL INSURGENT", mistaking you for an enemy.

    All it would have to do is detect skin tone really. White == friendly, dark skinned = enemy insurgent. They could unleash these things into Fallujah and not worry about roadside booby traps and bombs.

    Er.. where have you've been for the last 4 years? 4 years? Try 25 years at least. Careers were a fantasy of 1950s America where you got a job in your 20's as a low-level worker and worked your way up to management over 30 years and eventually retired on a nice pension from the company when you were 60.

    The ones who brought up the first draft bill where Democrats, which was opposed by the Republicans and rest of the Democrats alike, so how does Bush winning make it more likely?

    It doesn't, but I have to congratulate Charles Rangel on that little hot item. Introduce a bill that reinstates the draft (even though everyone voted against it and it's irrelevent), then spread the rumors throughout college campuses to spread FUD. It turns out Americans aren't as stupid as the Democrats thought.

    This propaganda offensive seemed to begin not too long after the news of the strong European social safety net began to leak out of Europe and into the conciousness of many Americans.

    The unemployment rate of Europe, on average, is 10%, almost twice that of the current United States unemployment rate. Is this the worker's paradise you're referring to? When Europeans aren't bitching about the United States they're rioting over unemployment or soccer games.

    things are starting to look good for linux, we now have a veriety of different companys that are starting to support linux. hopefully this will mean drivers will be better supported (atleast for the hardware provided).

    You could've posted this in 1996 and it would've been equally true unfortunately. I remember similar statements back then on comp.os.linux.advocacy and they've turned out to be just as false when it comes to fortelling Linux's future. I've come to accept Linux will never be anything more than a fringe operating system, but there's nothing wrong with that. Hell, MacOS is a fringe operating system compared to the numbers Windows has yet MacOS X is one of the nicest systems I've ever used.

    The problem is no sane porn vendor is going to move from a generally accesable .com domain to an easily censored like .xxx

    Simple, write legislation to ban pornographic sites unless they're in .xxx. If they don't comply then sue them or bring them up on criminal charges like child endangerment.

    On a (somewhat) related note, my purchased (OK, free after instant rebates) NEW Nokia 3588i (Sprint) is losing Menu, 1 and 6 (especially 6 - I have to take the faceplate off to get 6 to work).


    My Sanyo 8200 from Sprint that I purchased new ($120 after $150 rebate) works great. I guess you get what you pay for. Welcome to the world of disposable consumer electronics.

    Google is investing heavily in JavaScript-powered desktop-like web apps like Gmail and Blogger.

    I know this may sound lame for 2004, but I wish Google would make a nice portal page like my.yahoo.com and let logged in users modify their preferences. Maybe they already have, but I can't find it on their page. I think that'd be more useful than yet another Mozilla browser.

    The upfront cost won't be too bad at first.. about $400 per TV and an additional $500 per TV if you want "premium" content. The trouble is that you will need a dedicated sysadmin to to keep up on the security patches and maintain the active directory servers. All in all you should squeeze your HDTV over IP in at just around $5500 a month for 2 sets. A steal for a Microsoft solution!

    Here's hoping the G5 powerbook comes out at the same time as Tiger. That is a mac fans wet dream.

    Sorry, but until they have some new lower-power and cooler G5 chip it will never be in a Powerbook. Even the new iMac has big fans in it.

    I was pleasantly suprised that I could go from an old 7000-2 3Ware card to a newer 7500-4LP and it recognized the volume and booted up just fine. I guess it's not that amazing, but if I had some craptastic onboard RAID controller from vendor X and then bought another motherboard that used vendor Y's chipset then I'm SOL... especially if I'm buying a new motherboard because my old one is toast. ;-)

    Well said. For me personally, Nvidia can keep these cheap-ass boards until they integrate a fiberchannel controller onto them. I don't have time to screw around with this nancy-boy Serial ATA crap. I want a serious 8-way motherboard with fiberchannel so I can interface to my home SAN.

    PS: Go buy a 3Ware card if you want Serial ATA RAID. All onboard RAID controllers suck.

    What he's saying is that a system administrator is supposed to install software, not end users. These aren't Windows95 boxes at your home, these are powerful business computing devices running Windows XP Professional.

    Who the heck wants to watch a film about cork boards full of ads? What a bunch of weirdos.

    A BBS was a computer bulletin board system that someone would run with one or more dialup modem lines answering the calls and serving up a terminal session. This was before the invention of the PPP protocol and the widespread adoption of the internets.

    That is a good point, but remember that when you install that RAM in the 1 physical machine, you have to take all of the virtual machines + the physical machine offline. Single point of failure.

    Naw, you just move the virtual machines over to secondary systems that have the spare capacity, bring down the box, upgrade it, move the virtual machines back onto it, all without shutting anything down. See VMWare ESX, Vmotion and VirtualCenter for details on their site. Course, to take advantage of moving the machines without shutting them down you need a SAN on the backend. It's mainframes all over again.

    I think you're being a little paranoid. Why the hell would the FBI care about Indymedia's servers? From the last article they're just complying with a European country through international agreements. The FBI couldn't care less about Indymedia itself.

    Try doing everything in OOo's *native* format and you'll see its real power. Sure it can handle most Word Documents, but it wasn't designed nor ever intended to be a drop in replacement for MS Office.

    Exactly, which is why I still have to use Office 2003 Pro under Windows XP running inside VMware on top of my Linux workstation to edit these fscking documents. ALL of my word processing is either reading or editing documents created by other people (usually sales people or secretaries) in Office under Microsoft Windows. I type my own personal documents in vi and exchange them in ASCII.

    What have your experiences been with OpenOffice.org over the past four years?

    My experience with it is that it segfaults opening the one Word document that I need to edit on a regular basis. Office XP Pro and Office 2003 Pro handle the document just fine though.

    Oh, I guess you meant what positive comments do we have with this product... well, it sort of renders most Word documents half-way decently, although checkboxes and such look like crap compared to the real Word from Microsoft. Basically it's a usable free word processor, but it's definitely no Office 2003 replacement.

    If you're still running Windows 98 or Windows ME then you really deserve to get burned. Windows XP has been out for years and is patched against this vulnerability. I mean for crying out loud. Red Hat 9 isn't patched against many recent vulnerabilities and that's less than 2 years old, so cut Microsoft some slack for not supporting a 6 year old operating system version. That'd be like expecting Red Hat to still support 6.0.

    That or any of the many other alternate browsers that allow tabbed browsing. And that includes Opera, which did it in the first place.

    Why would you pay to use Opera when Firefox is just as good, if not better, and is free? Sure, you can use the ad-supported version of Opera, but who wants to watch ads in their web browser?

    So you don't listen to Howard Stern. Good for you, here's a cookie and a gold star for being able to stomach Morning Zoo radio or else Opie & Anthony style obscenity in lieu of titty chatter and New York kvetch-klatsches.

    You've got to be kidding me. Every day he brings a female onto the program, has her strip down and then ooohs and ahhhs over her perfect body while everyone is sitting there wondering wtf she looks like BECAUSE HE IS ON THE RADIO. When he's not doing that he'll play some idiotically simple game with homeless people or retards, take calls from his ass-kissing audience, or spend an hour bitching about how Bush and the FCC are killing America. This is his shtick and it's fucking tired. Aside from the Bush-bashing (he was pro-Bush until the Janet Jackson affair, then he flip-flopped and became a Bush hater for some reason), this is how his program has operated for years.

    Opie and Anthony on the other hand used to be a breath of fresh air and their interviews were entertaining. O&A is what Howard Stern USED to be before he went soft in the mid 1990's. I wish they were still on real radio though as I enjoyed listening to them during my afternoon commutes, but alas Sex for Sam killed them off. RIP O&A, and Fuck XM and Sirius.
