Sure it was fun to play around with and got you from point a to point b, But do you really want your friends to see you with one?
Hell yes. All of my friends were really impressed with the MythTV frontend I built with a Via EPIA motherboard. Just a tiny motherboard in a tiny book-sized case with no moving parts and network, video/tv-out, mpeg2 decoder, and sound all integrated into the box.
Seeing how the comments so far have been moderated, it's quite clear that the moderators are either unaware, or unwilling to be aware of a serious problem in America.
Exactly! Don't moderators know you're only supposed to moderate up liberal viewpoints as insightful? Conservatives and war-mongerers are misguided and should be moderated as low as possible and if possible their accounts should be banned completely. We can't have their intolerance for people voicing opposing viewpoints clouding our Slashdot forum in a time of great danger to John Kerry's election bid for President. Opposing viewpoints must be quenched!
I'm trying to work out whether the parent post was meant to be funny or not before I reply...
Neither. I'm just sick of various coworkers that fawn over Bill Gates like he's the Jesus Christ of computer technology. I honestly had an argument going with someone over whether or not Bill Gates invented web browsers. *sigh*. WTF is with this hero worship of this guy in the non-techie circles? Having $48 billion doesn't mean you're smart, it could just mean you got really fscking lucky... or if you're like the Waltons, you inherited it.
Bill Gates hasn't been relevant to Microsoft for some time.
Bull. Windows, Office, and Visual Studio were all products single-handedly coded by Bill Gates himself. Sure, other people have taken on the tasks of maintaining it, but the true vision of these products started under his programming leadership.
Under what circumstances would you institute a draft to fight the war on terrorism, or institute any other national service (such as the Universal National Service Act) to fight any other war?
That's a ridiculous question. Of course they'll say they will never support a draft. As we saw in Vietnam, conscripted men make AWFUL soldiers. They don't want to be there and they don't care about their fellow soldiers' welfare (because they are there against their will). Some may have learned to deal with it and went on to serve with honor, but for the most part it would've taken 2 or 3 draftees to equal the fighting usefulness of one volunteer soldier.
We have plenty of volunteers these days, so why would we bother even talking about the draft? Selective Service is there in case we have a serious threat to our nation's liberty like a massive outside invasion from China or Canada being invaded by a billion communist polar bears or something and calling for aid from their friends to the south.
Aside from Iraq, which was the stupidest thing Bush could've done (and I was a STRONG supporter of him 2 years ago), none of our actions against terrorists require a significant investment in ground troops. Even if the terrorists numbered 50,000-100,000, they are scattered around the world and not formed as a fighting force. We need to fight them with tens of millions of police officers and thousands of special counter-terrorist forces throughout the world, not drop million dollar cruise missiles on empty caves and send hundreds of thousands of troops halfway around the world to be sitting ducks in the middle of a desert.
My old Dell workstation has that beat easily. Push a button and the side pops off, pull a lever and the PCI riser module pops out, another lever pulls out the drive bays. The only screws are the ones holding the drive to the bracket and the PCI cards to the riser module as required in the spec.
The local library. Our library lets you borrow up to 26 CDs at once and you can reserve them online for pickup. Rip them and take them back for the next batch. Sure, it's a bit time consuming, but there's no guess working or fear of getting busted by the RIAA for sharing music.
AM is king. I can't get Rush Limbaugh on FM around here, but the 50,000 watt AM station is reachable for dozens (maybe hundreds at night) of miles around.
If they're on the same box as me, you just blacklisted 399 other domains that shouldn't have been blacklisted.
Extreme spamfighters don't care though. You're guilty by association in their eyes and deserve to feel the same wrath that the spammers do. It's so that you'll bitch to your provider and in turn your provider will shut down the spam site because all their other customers are complaining vs. some random guys on the Internet complaining they're receiving that URL in spam.
so now, as any good security conscious user does, my RSA key sits on my desk. right next to my workstation.
That's a silly place for your key fob. Mine is on my keychain along with my other keys. Other users put theirs on their badge lanyard, but either way, it's always close at hand.
OK, I think I found what the problem was. Adblock doesn't work with Mozilla 1.0PR. I uninstalled it and 1.0PR works fine when I upgrade my iBook. Off to find a (hopefully) updated Adblock so I can get rid of these banner ads.
Because one major thing the Internet lacks is unlimited access to free pornography. Just this morning I was thinking to myself: "Self... wouldn't it be cool if some entrepreneur put pictures of naked women on the Internet? Then we wouldn't have to visit those skanky adult bookstores in the seedy district anymore."
Who am I kidding though... if pornography was available on the Internet, how would we keep children from gaining access to it? Our entire society could collapse.
OK, now I know I'm sounding like a whiner to Mozilla fanboys, so I thought I'd give it a try on a completely different platform. I downloaded it and tried to run it on a MacOS X system and I get a broken browser there too. No, not complaining about IE, but it just doesn't work. I'm going from 0.9.1 to 1.0PR on this iBook laptop. It sits for about 5 minutes running update_prebinding then when it's done the program just hung. I kill it, restart it and you can't do anything. None of the bookmarks load, the home page doesn't load, none of the menu items load. It's just broke. I deleted it and went back to 0.9.1 and everything works just fine again. Is there something broken in the upgrade program that runs the first time after you start a new version? I'm just looking at this from the perspective of a new user switching from IE for example... don't suggest looking on bugzilla (even though it came up with nothing) because a new user won't.. they'll just go back to IE or Safari.
I realize they could be wipped fairly well but I would bet a good amount of money they were not.
Then you would be wrong. There are DOD standards government agencies have to follow regarding disposal of excessed equipment. If the hard drives can't be securely wiped then they will most likely be shredded.
I added to the download counter, installed it, found it didn't work at all for me, and then promptly downgraded back to Firefird 0.9.2. 1.0PR brought up some error about the Java plug-in being incompatible with Internet Explorer and then just hung taking up 100% of the CPU until it was manually killed with the task manager. 0.9.2 doesn't have that problem on my system so I'll stick with that until they fix the bug.
SPF isn't about stopping spam, it's about identifying the legitimate source of it. Sure, someone could do exactly as you described, but the recipients KNOW that it came from you and know they need to contact you as the postmaster to take care of it and cut that account. With current spam you have people relaying shit with totally forged addresses through open relays in Asia or even open relays on DSL or cable modem users that have been trojaned here in the US. Those are the guys it is meant to stop as Cox or SBC or whoever can simply say "mail from sbcglobal.net will only come from these servers and this IP range, never directly from this dialup or DSL range." If you get a message that has relayed through a DSL user then you drop it or tag it as spam.
The biggest problem I remember them having the first time was the Myth (and Linux) install. Then in this review they go with KnoppMyth and gloss over the 20 minute setup...
Thankfully now that MythTV supports the labs.zap2it.com stuff for getting your guide data, there's almost zero reason to ever upgrade it again. Previously you'd have to upgrade it every few months because xmltv would break so there went your guide data. They'd fix xmltv but it'd be broken with mythtv so you'd need a new mythtv release. Blah. I've been running MythTV 0.15.1 since early this spring and have no problems at all anymore. Thanks Zap2it for the free guide data.
Why do you guys make fun of this generous person anyway? He's donating $20 million of his money to construct a building at a university. If anything we should be praising him for his philanthropy. You may not like his methods, but he's certainly a kind, generous person at heart. Well, at least his wife is since I believe she's the one that controls the Gates Foundation allotments.
Honestly though, where would we be without Bill Gates? Windows brought computing to the average person and it shows. Microsoft doesn't have the largest market share in the world because they produce an inferior product that nobody wants, hell, people run to the stores to upgrade when a new version comes out and desperately try to get on beta programs to see what new goodies are coming down the pike. I think, deep down, we're all just a little jealous of this great man for his success in life.
I got my copy off of a P2P network. It was pretty awful and the points he was trying to make were stretching it to say the least. The entire point of the film was to make a mockery of President Bush's first term in office so it's no wonder Democrats love it. I guess I shouldn't have expected much more from Mr. Moore as he basically took the same approach with Bowling for Columbine:
1. Take a smattering of random facts and figures, 2. arrange them so they support your argument, 3. Profit!
Any statistician could tell you that if you supply the "facts", they can support the argument you're looking to justify. So, don't get me wrong, the facts he presents may well be entirely accurate, but the presentation as a whole is a problem that creates the lies.
Yup. and this is why all of their happy, greatful citizens are blowing up the oil pipelines.
You can't have it both ways. Either all muslims are evil and should be nuked, or the acts are being committed by a group of criminals and the majority of the people are innocents. I tend to believe the latter which is why I would never support the fanatics on our side who hate muslims simply because of the actions of a few nutcases on the other side. Do you honestly think the newly freed "normal" citizens are out there blowing up pipelines? They're more concerned with getting their lives back in order and securing themselves a stake in this new democracy without letting the theocrats take control.
Even small form-factor cubes don't look as sexy as this. Exactly the type of machine that could adorn any room in a house.
WTF? Sexy? This looks like the LCD monitor I just got. There's nothing sexy about it. Practical and functional sure, but sexy? No. The iMac G4 was cool looking though.. this design is just boring.
Why don't you just look at the price on their online store. It ranges from $1299 to $1800+. That's not that expensive for a computer with a flat panel monitor IMHO.
Hell yes. All of my friends were really impressed with the MythTV frontend I built with a Via EPIA motherboard. Just a tiny motherboard in a tiny book-sized case with no moving parts and network, video/tv-out, mpeg2 decoder, and sound all integrated into the box.
Because .com is what web sites are. I mean, you've never heard of http://something.org have you? Sheesh. Web sites are in .com. *rolls eyes*

Make sure they're open to the public too. You don't want to be a stingy admin right? You should share your proxy server with the world.

Try using a mailer that doesn't suck, like Postfix.
