I should not, since it came back to me, that even with our bursting, speedtests always showed the proper normal bandwidth. We usually uses the Speakeasy test site to check throughput and you could see the initial burst, then the throttled speed which is what was actually reported back as the result.

This is it, and it should be amazingly obvious to any "sysadmin" who should know something about general browsing habits. I worked for a wISP for a year and this was a standard feature offered by the company for no extra charge. Max subscriber speeds were 1.5 Mbps, but for about 20 seconds ALL traffic was burst to 2 Mbps, regardless of the subscriber paying for the 500 k/s speed or something higher. For general browsing and light email, it made all the customers quite happy to have things terrifically speedy.

Reminds me of criminal records in North Carolina. Want a statewide record search for yourself to take to an employer (some require proof of a clean record)? $15 for a copy that takes 10 seconds to pull up. Want a handgun permit? $3 for the processing, wherein the county sheriff department run a criminal record check and are required by law to contact at least 2 references before approving the permit.

Well it's not just that it's larger, but also that a lot of the territory is rural that makes it a problem. I worked for a wISP in Kansas, where many of the smaller towns (3000+ people) had DSL but so many people live *miles* away from the smallest town, where the popluation *might*, if they have family over, be 15 people per square mile.

Even wirelessly it gets tough to service that kind of area, never mind make a profit. Sure, the infrastructure is cheaper than laying cable or fiber, but it's still expensive, and it's run by smaller operations (usually) that have no ties to a telco or cable company, and often people with only limited wifi experience, so laying out an infrastructure for wireless is pricey and difficult to manage. Id absolutely hate to be responsible for laying fiber over that kind of vast area, and hell, providing wireless access was a bitch some days.

As for thinness: Its nice, to me, its not a big enough deal to ooooh and aaaahhh over the Air (and Id far sooner have the lenovo) but it was a factor last time I bought a laptop, and probably will be when I get to buy another one. I last had a Dell Inspiron 1100. In addition to it being slow (celeron, bah) it was heavy (over 5lbs) and very bulky. I can only fit so much into a bag, and when I had it I was a field tech for a wISP. I had plenty of tools and parts to carry, the dell was heavy. So i bought a Thinkpad T40. Smaller, lighter, faster. Bonus: trackpoint :) It saved room (as well as wear and tear) in my bag and shaved 2lbs off the specs. Mmmmmm. My parents, and my siblings, all have larger laptops...which act basically as desktop replacements. With 15.4" screens theyre a fair bit heavier, as well as quite bulky. But they usually just have them in one or two places around the house, and *might* take it on a trip with them. Me, I like to take mine to school (since Im a student now), work (no longer a tech, I do use it on lunchbreaks) and around the house (large family, large dwelling, sometimes I want to be alone, sometimes not so much) Id almost certainly never buy the Air, and while I like it more, Id probably never ever get a x300 (prices aside, on both units) But another T series? Or something similar? Id be *very* interested. A full desktop replacement? Never.
