Hi,
can anybody tell me if there is an affordable SGI machine that is still usefull today? I do lots of video related work and would love to use a SGI machine. Maybe for capturing or something like that?
Thanks
Hendrik
I don't think that server grade hardware is going to be available free of charge anytime soon. Maybe you will get a pc for free like you get a cellphone for free if you sign a service contract.
But don't forget: That isn't really free, the costs are hidden. And stay the hell away with cheap crap like that from my serverroom:)
>Windows for Power exists
Nobody suggested otherwise. The article said, that it was scraped in 1997, not that it totally vanished of the earth or that it never existed.
As you may have noticed: in 1997 the current windows version was NT4. Wich fits perfectly with you information that NT4 is used as development platform for the Xbox2.
The article talks about 230GB/day. That's 6900 GB per month (30 days).
With your package that would add up to 6820, that's about 8900 US$.
That is not a good deal, that is awfully expensive...
so, what is the meaning of these words in your language:
"But unlike ordinary users, the software mogul has an entire department to filter unsolicited emails[...]"
Oh, come on you're cheating: You're using common sense and the power of rationality.
Why don't you just join the big party and start spreading FUD like everybody else? Join the team! It's fun!
I mostly agree with you, but you don't really mean that last sentence, do you?
Of course, the United States did a whole lot on the WESTERN front, but without the eastern front and hundred of thousands of german soldiers tied up there, we might have seen a different outcome of that war. Fortunately we didn't, but claiming that the US defeated the Nazis alone is ridiculously.
if you tell me your emailadress and promise to send me any shuttle you happen to find in you're yard, you got yourself a deal:)
Slightly OT: 3COM Office Connect Storage Server
on
Portable Storage?
·
· Score: 1
Hi,
I'm using, well used, a 3COM Storage Server. It's a nice product with a 40GB Disk that acts as a NAS. I wanted to change the disk to a bigger one and just tried to copy all partitions to the bigger drive and expand the data partition.
Problem is: none of the tools i used produced a running clone of the old disk.
When I gave up, the original disk didn't boot either...
Has anyone out there informations about this product, has changed a disk or knows where to get information or support (since 3com doesn't offer any service anymore).
Thanks
Hendrik
Just a hint: No matter how valid your point is, most sane people will just ignore you as long as use some mixture of geek talk and toddler babbling: "Microshite Windoze" is not cool, it doesn't make a point and is just embarrassing...
And being arrogant and calling others stupid just because they have a different opinion is, well, just plain dumb.
I think they want to ensure that the plugin just works and want to prevent that some clueless enduser stumbles upon some alpha release of some open source plugin and can't get it to work.
If a developer has problems with a third party tool he will most likely realise that the problem is the third party development tool, not a general flash problem.
I think it's kind of smart. Their end user base isn't likely to get any larger, i mean it's already the most installed plugin worldwide.
So what, that doesn't mean that he is guilty in the official meaning of the word. He was arrested yesterday, with the help of all kinds of specialists, some of them work for Microsoft.
It's standard procedure for the police to work with external specialists.
The idiot who wrote that worm was released later that day and his trial will be in a couple of months where all kind of evidence is used to see if he is guilty or not.
Yes, most likely the statements of said specialists will be heard by the judge but what you are trying to imply is just pure bullshit.
You know, it was a worm written for for a Microsoft OS. I can hardly imagine a better source for information for the police.

Oh and stealind cars hurts car companies? no, it doesn't. It even helps them since you need a new car if your's got stolen. But that doesn't make it legal to steal a car.
The correct analogy here would be: Should the "owner" of a stolen car be entiteld to get a free repair if his car is called back due to fabrication failure? And the the answer is of course: no
Maybe you're don't belong to the target group? This is great for small offices with no admin: They just connect the box to their switch and that's it.
You know, there are offices that don't have a server and don't need one. They just need a small box which is easy to setup, easy to use and does everything they need: store some files.
Can you run a multinational cooperation with thousands of user of theses things? no. A company with ca. 10 persons that is not in the IT business? sure.
Hi,
sorry for this OT posting, but this opportunity is just to good: I have a 40GB 3COM NAS (3Com Office Connect Network Storage Server) which is a great device with just one problem: 40GB is not quite enough:-)
Since it uses a normal 3,5" harddisk i'm wondering what it would take to change the HDs. I think there is a hidden partition on the disk that contains the OS for the box.
Since I have no experience with these things I would love to hear if anybody has done something like this and can give me some hints?
Thanks
yes, but those people usually don't buy a mp3-player for a couple hundred bucks...
plus, you can get a replacement for 49$. What's the matter with you people? There is no story concerning the batteries of iPods. Just move on and get a freakin life.
Well, google for chinese manned space mission.
The first result:
http://www.spacedaily.com/news/china-02zi.html
Date: Apr 9, 2002 !
I quote:
In a report that the Chinese media widely published on Apr. 3 and 4, a space official hinted strongly that China would attempt the first manned launch with the Shenzhou-5 (SZ-5) mission next year
Hot damn, that was a surprise. They published it only 18 months earlier. Manned space missions from China? Who knew??
All the Lacie Firewire drives we use here (video editing shop) are equipped with Maxtor drives and a quick google search shows the same result...
Maybe you should take a look in your case:-)
I'm sure they use / have used other brands, but there is a rather good chance you have a Maxtor too.
BTW: Never had a failure with one of these in the last maybe two years...
Bad idea, at least for DVDs. Never use stickers on DVDs.

Wow, you're pretty smart. Or you just read the article where it says exactly the same thing... :-)

Exactly. Plus, there is plenty of space left in that line :-)
