  1. Physics 101 on Swiss Solar Powered Catamaran Finishes 'Round the World Tour · · Score: 1
    Physics 101:
    • Watt is the unit of power (e.g. Voltage in Volts times Current in Amperes.) Power can be popularly explained as the max burst of energy that can be produced in a very short time.
    • Joule is the unit of work (e.g. Power in Watts times Time in Seconds.) Work can be explained as the actual work done over a period of time.
    • Your electricity bill usually is in kilo-Watt-hours (which is a unit of work derived from Ws/Joule.)
    • The higher power the electricity connection must provide, the thicker the copper leads and the insulation must be and the more costly the connection will be. A very high powered connection also has implications for the electricity producers.
    • The mentioned 500 to 600 kw/h is pretty much meaningless. Perhaps it is meant that at the end of the daylight the batteries are charged with 600 kWh, which means they could run through the night with 50 kW of power at their disposal (that actually would be jolly decent!)

Here on /. I'd expect my previous babbling to be basic knowledge. All self-proclaimed geeks should know this. It forms the absolute base for driving your computer. (And I'm not even expecting geeks to understand or appreciate the horrendous effects caused by digital waveforms.) Than again, if anyone less pedantic then me would leave then /. would be pretty lonesome.

Physics challenged geeks! Don't run away just now! We need you!

  2. Game Purpose on Growing Evidence of Football Causing Brain Damage · · Score: 1

I once had an argument with a US citizen. He bragged that you need protective gear to play American footy and alluded to the general ruggedness of US inhabitants. I countered that if a game gets too violent, you should revise the rules otherwise it isn't a game any more. My argument didn't catch on. I got the distinct impression that primordial sensation was the only justification for a sport for the lad in question. The whole experience made me understand US culture just a little bit better. If something is worth doing than it's worth overdoing it extremely.

  3. On Entertainement on Stop Being Poor: U.S. Piracy Watch List Hits a New Low With 2012 Report · · Score: 1

On the subject of entertainment, why exactly should we support an industry that provides stuff we don't really need? Actually stuff that we'd be better of without.

You're an artist in need of a few bob? Go on and perform and entertain like all the rest of us do. You're not that special. Don't expect some artificial, non-natural mechanism to be your source of everlasting income.

You have an urge to produce films and in need of multi-millions? Downsize buddy and keep your message clean and simple. Special effects are expensive and don't add anything to a story built up well.

Sure, I'm not completely fair towards educational authors. But as a society we should restrict support to parasites like music and film corporations. Considering huge sums delivered to your doorstep as a matter of fact is plain and simple a commie thing.

  4. Makes you wonder on Audi Gives Silent Electric Car Synthetic Sound · · Score: 1

Makes you wonder which sounds different cultures will produce. Will it reflect the country's stereotypes? Will popular composers be chosen? Would there be a yearly or monthly poll who's got the coolest sound? Etc...

I wouldn't be surprised if in my fair country lucky strikes occur (sort of) which the competition attributes to too infantile or too simple a technique but which the mass kinda likes.

I for one hope Tom Waits will produce an all American sound and the Kraftwerk will influence the German car scene. Showaddywaddy would get out of their graves for the UK. Los del Rio will inevitably produce Seat noises.

  5. Why doesn't Facebook on Facebook: Legal Action Against Employers Asking For Your Password · · Score: 1

Why doesn't Facebook simply sell the information directly to employers? It would minimize litigation and maximize revenue. In the end it is what FB is in the business for.

Irony aside, IMHO FB keeping records indefinitely will result in serious ethical issues. Stuff FB hasn't though of until now will emerge. Practices that will cause discomfort-to say the least- to FB account holders. I'm watching on the side line, eager to express sarcasm. My only hope is damages to humans will be reversible.

Every opportunity I had with that site ended in frustration and I always found hugely better written material elsewhere.

Doing that is rather tricky at best as natural language is difficult to interpret by non-humans. Finding out if an article is well written is even tougher. Finding indirect hints -e.g. style, vocabulary, spelling errors, reputation of referring sites, etc...- as to articles are well written is likely to be more effective.

Improve the results. Concentrate on best articles first instead of worst articles last.

Is it big news that the first female is appointed to any function at all? Emancipation has come a great way and nowadays female lead is business as usual. Admittedly there are a less females in IT but that's more to do with it being less appealing to women. Not because the male majority keeps them from career opportunities. There are enough examples of women doing more than fine. In fact, using this tone is rather patronizing and I wonder whether Ms. Bergeron really appreciates the attention on the sole base that she's a lady, doing lady's things.

I get so disgusted with people who have a legitimate greivance, but blow it all out of proportion by suing for tens or hundreds of millions of dollars. It's like, "Oh, these guys insulted me - I should never have to work again! Set me up with luxury homes, luxury cars, furs, diamonds, yachts and private jets!"

You clearly aren't the target market for a kit form, then.

Seriously, though: the world is full of people who want to do difficult, unnecessary things. It is a human-being feature. All Raspberry Pi has to do is say "Kits are not covered by warranty, period."

In my class I probably was the best at designing PCBs and at soldering and I must disagree with you. Times have changed -and I'm also getting older- and I find it hard to sensibly compete -even as a hobbyist- with mechanical, industrial level soldering, which is what the Raspberry hopefully meets. Also, trying and failing is probably less of a nuisance than trying, nearly succeeding and winding up with weird situations because of soldering issues. Spoke as a tinkerer.

In some ways Communism and Fascism are quite alike.

If you feel obliged to utter phrases like "Among my best friends I have ..." or "I have nothing against ..." then that is probably a sign that you still aren't there.

The best managers know how to inspire people with their infectious optimism and positive thinking. Doing extra work isn't that bad when/if you're appreciated for it.

Hell I'd to the systematic checks in order to assure that I'm not damaging anything in the process. Imagine how much time I could save a real brain surgeon!

That didn't sound too convincing, did it? Just as convincing as people trying to code in one year. Sure, you'd be able to write a small program on your private system. I think what really goes on here is that some people just don't want to give Apple credit for anything

Oh come off that high horse you ride. There are similarities between Apple and the pictures of Vizio devices. Vizio seems to be inspired by Apple but they are not copycats. There's only so many things you can do in designing a monitor, e keyboard and a trackpad.

Currently it seems the PC fashion is aluminum and smaller sizes. Even real fashion where design isn't just nice-to-have but paramount, inspiration goes even further than what Vizio does here. Yet the original designers only press charges in severe copy cases.
Look at cars. Nowadays matt black is very hip. Yet the first designers to choose matt black as colour won't sue. (Possibly because this designer was busy painting a shed. But that's a personal taste issue I have.)

Apple's design is cute but they annoy me when claiming their designs are so innovative. How many ways are there to arrange icons on a desktop? Will Apple again almost claim that they invented the desktop GUI?

Long before the event of Internet, registers were conceived whereby communications and stays could be documented. I once had to register for Internet access using one of these. The revision of the register I used dated 1937. I take it never changed since. Again one of the gems of Mussolini.

That's the point I have with FPSs. They are realistic but not really. You don't get into a "due I could die here" mood which would lift the game to a different level. It 'd train the brain in making better split second decision. I should assume that military level gaming would concentrate on mission completion while still getting out alive and that that would be where they differ from commercial games. And I'm not sure there's a market for plots like "Wanna be a soldier? Good, let's start by playing chess."
