You bring up an interesting point but it's actually rather simple. What you think you are seeing already happened approximately 2 seconds before you think it happened. It's like this: light normally travels pretty fast but for video games it's slowed down to approximately the speed of sound. That is why what you see and hear seem to go together. Instead of the visuals traveling at the typical speed of light they are traveling at only 60 frames per second, for the average user. For some it's a bit faster and for the less fortunate it can be a lot slower.
Think of it like the way you see stars in the sky but they may not even exist anymore, it's just what you see happened a long time ago. Same thing except instead of thousands of light years we're only talking approximately 2 seconds. So you see my friend, the system can still predict your twitches approximately 2 seconds before you THINK you are twitching... but as they say, it's all in the past.
I totally agree. If everyone would just switch to Ubuntu, the few left that aren't already running it that is, we would have one true distro to rule them all!
I blame Soulseek. Wait... shouldn't I blame Napster? Or was it WinMX? Actually it was Hotline from Big Red H before any of those. But somewhere along the line I got my first taste of crack... I mean free music. Free as in it don't cost me no thang. I'm sure in the long run it will cost me and we could argue that it's people like me that are slowly killing the music industry or whatever but whether or not that's true, I've quit buying cd's. I used to buy around 100 a year give or take. Now I buy maybe 3. Two of those will be cd/dvd combos that I only buy because they also have a dvd.
Part of the issue is that I don't want to shell out $$ for a bunch of crap and one or two songs that I like. Part of it is that I'd much rather kick it at home and get my tunes then have to go to BestBuy or wherever to buy a cd. It's convenience. It's laziness. It's whatever you want to label it. The bottom line is I used to buy a lot of cd's and now thanks to the intarweb I have a patch over one eye and I yell arrgh a lot.
When I first heard about the iTv I thought it was going to be a killer dvr that would be a real contender to Tivo and remove the need for programs like MythTV. That's not what it is at all and I'm left wondering what the hell the point of this thing really is. How many people want to be locked into buying videos from Apple? I want access to the video collection I already have. I want to be able to rip my dvd collection to divx and then have access to those files via a nice clean interface. I want a really great, really slick dvr with some cool Apple type features. Not this pile o' crap.
I'd like to think that Apple will release a software update that turns this into a dvr but I don't think it has the hardware to do that sort of thing. I haven't read anything about it having a tuner or any way to hook it to cable or sat service. Maybe version two will have that stuff. Then I may buy one.
Lets not forget the other benefits from downloading tv shows. As the article discusses the main one is acess to something you otherwise wouldn't be able to watch at all, or at the very least much sooner than you'd would otherwise be able to watch it. The benefits do not end there. I recently moved and switched from Dish to DirecTV. I missed approximately two weeks of tv shows that are on the first dvr while I am now using the second dvr. There is now way (that I know of) to move shows from one to the other so I hopped online and downloaded what I had missed... along with a few movies but that's beside the point.
After burning the files to a dvd and popping them into my divx capable dvd player I was able to watch the shows in widescreen format without commercials. I could have gotten them in surround sound as well but my player doesn't support surround for divx files so I went with the smaller non-surround sound files.
When watching these shows via my dvr I obviously have to contend with commericials, but because I don't have a high def setup, I can only watch the full screen version of most shows even though I would greatly prefer a wide screen version. By downloading I get exactly what I want, with no hassle of fastforwarding past commercials and I get it whenever I want it, not when some company says I can have it. I don't think this is something they can compete with. It's like when Napster fell the RIAA thought people would suddenly stop downloading just because Napster was gone. I have access to a better product then what DirecTV is selling me for free so what incentive do I have to keep their service? I will because at some point it becomes a hassle to download everything you want to see. Would be nice if there was some automated program that would access the torrent site and retrieve the latest files for each of my favorite shows and now that I think about it, I could easily right such an animal in perl. I think I'll do just that. Maybe I will drop DirectTV after all.
Why should we suck it up? Wally World wants our dollars yet they aren't willing to take the few extra minutes to test their offering on any other browser. This seems odd considering that Firefox users are probably more likely to be early adopters of a service like this. We think different... or something.
For me it's simple. I have IE and I could easily switch over and use it. But I won't. I won't because I don't NEED this service and therefore since Wally World won't go that extra mile for me by ensuring their offering works on the browser I choose to use, I won't give them any of my dollars. It's not like I'm using some obscure piece of software that nobody has ever heard of before outside of the couple of guys in their parents basements staying up all night coding. Firefox users need to quit "switching" everytime some jackass decides to code for IE.
If Firefox was arcane or backwards I could understand not wanting to support it. Firefox is a powerful, robust, well written browser that is, in my opinion anyway, far superior to IE 6. I can't say much about IE 7 as I've only used it a couple times and hopefully I'll never have to again (was the only browser on a friends computer, I do NOT have it on any of my machines). It's not hard to code to standards that all browsers support, or at least claim to support.
We've been hearing this pretty much since Halo landed but has there been any stats to back up the claim? I bought my xbox not long before Halo 2 came out and Halo was one of the first games I bought, and Halo 2 the day it came out. Both are great games but they weren't the only games I liked on the xbox, just as Gears isn't the only game I play on my 360 but was the reason I bought a 360. That and knowing that Halo 3 is just around the corner. I'm not disputing the cliam that Halo made the xbox but I'm just wondering if there was an actual surge in hardware units sold following it's release that could be directly attributed to that one game.
I'm griping? I was simply pointing out that the two services aren't all that similar. For example with Cingular I can go anywhere in the country and as long as I can get a signal I can talk without having to pay roaming. With MetroPCS I would have to pay roaming quite a bit because they only cover the main area where I live and I'm often in areas they don't offer their service in. They don't have national service like the big carriers and for those of use who need wide coverage areas, they aren't a viable option.
do me a favor and compare apples to apples. I have Cingular and I had a few friends that tried Metro PCS but it's just not the same level of service. It's also not that great of a deal if you want a few people on the same account, or wasn't when I looked into it a while back. At the time I was told it would be $40 per phone so $120 per month. I can get quite a bit from Cingular for that much each month. For those that talk a lot it might be great but I have over three thousand roll over minutes because I don't talk that much (and I have a small plan)... so it's no savings for me.
I know quite a few people that would own one if they didn't have to choose between two competing services. I've used Sirius and I like it. I haven't gotten to try XM yet. If I were to buy today I'd go with Sirius and then I'd undoubtedly be in someones car that had XM and I'd really like that and want to switch which would cost me more $$$ for additional hardware. Instead I just wait on the sidelines until they one day merge and I no longer have to make a choice. But by then I'll be so used to listening only to my mp3 collection that I won't care and will never subscribe.
They need to merge and they need to do it sooner rather than later or they will both end up out of business. The FCC is stupid to prevent their merger. It's a private optional service and having the service available or not isn't going to adversely impact anyones life to the point that the FCC needs to protect us.
You make a good point except Dish Network doesn't have the NFL package it's DirecTV who offers the NFL Sunday Ticket. I have Dish and would gladly pony up for the NFL package if I could get it without chaning my service. I would have also had it back when I had Comcast but DirecTV pays the NFL a lot of money for exclusive access to all of their games.
Just because you see that error doesn't mean that MySQL has "died". If the number of people hammering your site exceeds the number of connections you have allowed, that message will come up. Granted by that point the server is probably crawling but maybe not. You may be doing a dump from a particular table causing it to remain locked while the dump is in progress. All queries to that table will stack waiting for it to get unlocked and that can cause your connections to max which would in turn cause that particular error message. Not the only caue of course but the main one I've come across.
There needs to be more co-op games. Halo and Halo 2 kicked ass in co-op. GOW is awesome in co-op. Much more fun then just playing with cg guys. Too many of the good games like Call of Duty lack co-op and it's a shame. They are still fun games but they don't live up to their potential. Not all of us want to play online.

Have you gotten past the beserker? I figured we'd just kick it into god mode, get past that part, and then go back to normal play... no such luck. I can't find any cheat codes at all.
What about the xbox? I don't know if you can call it a failure and it's too early to know what will happen in the xbox vs ps3 vx wii death brawl. I for one really liked my xbox. It was my fav console of that generation. I just picked up a 360 about a week ago so I could play Gears of War and Dead Rising.
The xbox is another example of MS joining the party late. They made the largest console and it wasn't as refined as the other offerings. They threw a lot of money at the situation and they did well enough to have a second go with the 360. This might just be the one time they get it right and finally dominate in something hardware related.
I think the Wii has a better chance of upstaging Sony than the 360. A lot of people are interested in the Wii not because of it's cool new features but because it's so much cheaper than the competition. Lots of parents don't want to cough up $400 or $600 for a game console. Sure they could get the cheaper models of each but then they would look cheap. And lets face it, the Wii is pretty damn cool.
I have a 360 and I hope it does really well now that the PS3 is out but I don't think it will be number one when the dust settles. Sony knows game consoles and they've rocked the market twice now. I don't see that changing anytime soon. I'll be buying a PS3 in a year or so when there are several good games for it, just like I bought a 360 a week ago. I'll pick up a Wii probably before Christmas, just cause it's cool and cheap, and there are quite a few game titles coming out already.
Toilet paper?!?!? Haha you silly American. We never used toilet paper. No, in Soviet Russia we used crisp new $20 American bills. It was like... how you say... funny money to us... no that's not it... monopoly money... yes, like monopoly money to us. And the convenient size was pefect for wiping our Soviet hind quarters. Thank you Americans!
For those that like Halo, Gears Of War should keep you happy until Halo 3 is out. I just bought it two nights ago and I'm really wishing the weekend would hurry up and get here so I can play it all night. I love co-op FPS games and Gears of War is awesome!
I'm glad Halo 3 was delayed rather than coming out at the same time as GOW. That wouldn't have made any sense from a maximum profit angle.
I picked up an Xbox 360 last night along with Gears of War and Dead Rising. Will pick up a few more games in the next week or so and then of course Halo 3 when it comes out. The main reason I decided to go with a 360 and not a PS3 right now had nothing to do with the price. I wanted a system that had some games available. The PS3 won't have a large number of good games for at least several months. I'll buy one probably next fall unless something really great comes along. Having just bought a 360 I think that will keep me entertained for quite a while.
It's hard to compare them one on one. My wife just bought a Dell 17" lappy and it supports a higher resolution than the Apple 17". So which screen is better or worth more? I've no idea. I guess that depends on if you need the higher resolution or not. If they were identical computers in every way then we could easily determine which one costs more, but as it is, it's really anyones guess.
Also keep in mind that you can save quite a bit on a Dell through coupons or their outlet store and sometimes there are coupons that work on the outlet store to save you even more. If you don't mind a refurb unit you can save a bundle. My wifes setup was under $1500 and yes, it's refurbished but you can't get close to what she has with an Apple branded machine for that kind of money.
If only he'd given her the Soulseek installer on a disk... she could have gotten so much more use out of it... with no compatibility problems at all.;)
