  1. about frelling time on Biotech Genome Patents Invalidated? · · Score: 1

The Biotech companies have been holding up too much valuable research by grabbing and keeping what is basically "open source"..
IANAL but i think this ruling cannot be (unfortunately) applied retroactively.. meaning that what has already been patented ("squatted on" to continue with the real estate theme) still belongs to the biotechs..
however there are ways to "encourage" these companies to allow research on them.. it has happened before where a Corporations patent application / FDA application / whatever has been held up in red tape until they "voluntarily" complied with the regulations that may not totally apply to them..

at the risk of sounding like a troll.. i will say this.. i have nothing, absolutely nothing against studying anime... i study it too (and not just the tentacle rape scenes)... i just believe that you don't need to go to class for this..

there are enough geeks out there who you can get with and learn (like one of the people who replied to this thread said .. "join the college anime club".. even if you don't have one.. SOMEONE is bound to have anime... watch it with your friends.. sit and discuss over a couple of beers.. if you want to get a background on how other people/cultures see it.. watch it with a japanese exchange student and discuss it with him.. get some foreign students (hell _i_ was a foreign student who was turned from mild anime fan to rabid anime freak by my american friends in college) and watch it with them.. THAT will give you a better view than a class will.. not to mention increase your social life

Cost of anime videos : $20
    Cost of beer : $20
    Cost of pizza : $30

Introducing someone to the joy of anime : Priceless
compare that with spending $800 to sit in a class for a structured lesson.. which would YOU pick?

we have had courses in Star Trek, Star Wars, Wine Appreciation and whatever.. but the point is here.. what will this mean for your future..

i am not arguing that people need not be given a grounding in the arts, far from it.. but lets face it folks, this is POP ART.. i doubt that other than the history of anime, this "course" can teach you anything that you and your friends can't learn by just sitting in front of the tube for a few brews and talking about it..

the point i am trying to make is that there is a LOT of art history out there.. stuff that people take for granted.. stuff that people don't BOTHER to learn...

Colleges are offering this kind of course to make you pay for a course that will not mean anything on your transcript (unless you are going into the anime field) and is nothing but grade padding.. in the same vein you may as well take a course in Britney Spears

don't get me wrong .. i am a big fan of anime.. its just that i think that a college course on it, while cool, would be a waste of money (yours/your parents/your state's) and time that could be better spent (on girls/brews/parties)...

Now according to maths almost any number is calculable. The only ones that cannot are ones that are infinitely large or infinitely small...

if the losses to the industry were infinitely large there would be no industry at all.. therefore.. the losses should be infinitely small..

  10. this could go either way - but probably downhill on Why (FM, Not XM) Radio Sucks · · Score: 5, Interesting

i used to be a radio DJ in Sri Lanka (TNL Radio) and i think that XM MAY be a good idea IF they can please people.. by offering 100 channels (like on cable) they are trying to hit the niche markets.. and i think that the niche markets may buy into it.. if only for a while.. people started to buy cable so that they could get stuff they couldn't get in the "regular" channels and now cable has a niche channel for everyone.. but radio is a little different.. like they say in the article "the commercial FM dial has been essentially reduced to six musical formats: Pop/rock, hip-hop, country, classical, Spanish-language and variations on the theme of "adult contemporary," "... lets face it the channels have been split into that because that is what's popular.. sure XM may allow people to listen to Inuit whaling songs or Apache chants.. but will there be a market for them? or will they just all deteriorate into variations on the 6 standard themes?.. with the RIAA not giving publicity to "non standard" artists and also will they actually have a chance to show up on these channels? i am not sure how good this guy panero is.. but i have had to geal with his fallout.. even here in Sri Lanka we had TNL, a station with a great reputation as a rock station, go downhill into britney spears-esque pop.. the owner decided there was more of a market for it.. (what could we do.. his car, his petrol)... but we lost a lot of fans.. and a lot of us (me included) walked off.. now i listen to stuff i download off the net..

i guess the point i am trying to make is this.. human nature being what it is.. XM will start off with a bang.. but soon deteriorate into yet another generic music station.. sure they won't have any advertising.. and maybe the choice will be marginally better.. but do you REALLY want to pay $150 + $9.99 per month to hear the Butts Treat Boys?.. remember MTV? and how they had to launch M2 so that people would play them for what they WERE supposed to deliver.. namely music?

  15. Re:Creation of Life - Eve was a CLONE on Did Life Originate Underwater? · · Score: 1
    according to the bible (KJV):
    Genesis 2:21-22
    And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof;

And the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man.

Therefore, Eve was created from the same genetic material (except for a chromosome change [23rd pair???]) as Adam. Eve was technically a clone, with some minor GM work.

So if we go with the idea that there was NO distinct change in the two DNA structures, we are basically the product of some hardcore (technically speaking) incest.

Yet another reason why you really can't look at the bible in a scientific context.
