I do hope it's being streamed over the net - I can't get Radio 4 here... Sure, I may be in Loughborough and have a perfect signal, but I don't have a radio tuner at the moment, and my car aerial has snapped off! Grrr!

Two points - they don't remaster the VHS, duh!

Other point - they remastered it a few years back for VHS, and at the end of Return of the Jedi there is a sequence where everyone is happy as big explosion yadda yadda yadda, and the Ewoks start leaping around, and they put in a montage of computer generated fireworks over cities we have never seen before, and it looks completely out of place and rubbish. Why can't people understand that Special Effects for the sake of Special Effects is CRAP? The only Special Effects movie of recent years remotely watchable was I, Robot. And that was because I slept through the bit with Will Smith in the car being attacked by Robot-a-likes.

You make a good point, but the problem is that the US is, once again, going to be left behind while the rest of the world moves on ahead and enjoys the benefits before the US... It still makes me laugh when I go to America and a street vendor tries to sell me a non-GSM phone :) If only they knew how it was in the UK (and indeed... Finland, where not having a mobile phone is grounds for termination - Arnie style!)

Anyway, yes back to the point. VoIP is being marketed by BT as Broadband Voice. The UK's BIGGEST telco! Can't see anything on US soil that is remotely like that... If I weren't a flag-waver-hating hypocrite of a moron, I'd gloat...

I had this idea in about '97 or '98. I looked around to see if anyone else had done anything like this (remember, this is kinda pre-mass-P2P) and found that someone had done so, but on a business scale solution. I think it was called Mango, and is still in production today. It essentially made a portion of your drive available for a drive letter, then whetever was copied onto it could be seen by all. The data was stored in at least 2 places, so if one went down, there was still one copy, and the remaining copy would duplicate, so that there was always at least 2 copies. In the end, I think nobody went for it because it was too expensive... But this is EXACTLY what a lot of Small-Medium businesses need atm. Bring on the Mango's!

No, you don't get what Irate Radio is. It's not even really a radio station. What happens is that you fire up the player, and it downloads a few MP3's, from Magnatune, mp3.com.au et al, and asks you to rate them. Internet goes down? Doesn't matter - the MP3's have already been downloaded! irate.sf.net

  18. Re:Once again, protest with your money on RIAA Grinds Down Individuals in the Courtroom · · Score: 3, Informative

I found irate today, and have fallen in love with it. There are three things wrong with it though:

    1) There appears to be no main site where you can submit possible new download places, such as MachinaeSupremacy.com (hint hint)

    2) There is no "more from this author" button, just a search that types the artist and title in Google. When I listened to Beth Quist I immediately wanted to buy her album, but couldn't, unless I did research.

    3) Not really irate's fault, but I want the music on CD as well as a download. Fair enough, you can burn your own etc, but it would be nice if they could send you a CD for an extra GBP 5 (about $10) or something. Even if it is a CD-R with a printed cover and track list... Or have I missed the point?

So essentially, irate radio is a really good idea, needs a lot of work on the interface etc, preferably a Winamp plugin or something, and needs our support!

BTW, Beth Quist (one of the MP3's I downloaded was from her) is on Magnatune (the non-evil people). If we could only get message out to kids about Magnatune, as I think it's a good lesson to be learnt. The "Why I set up Magnatune" section made me not want to buy any more commercial CD's that have touched the hands of the RIAA ever again...

Apparently the DARE program has had little impact if any on children in the UK. In fact, since DARE began in the UK (my school was one of the first) drug use in the under-15 age group has INCREASED. This anti-piracy will just send the wrong message. What is needed is an explanation about Copyright, what it is, what the Creative Commons does and what Copyleft it. Ie/ How to reserve all, some or none of the rights to your creations, and why you would do it. Understanding WHY you buy music, rather than downloading is important, just saying it's wrong is... stupid! The children need to know that it's not just musicians that copyright things, they can do it too... and they should exploit it so that some day they can burn Disney into the ground ;) And piss all over RIAA/MPAA while they are at it...

I'm in Finland at the moment, for the Assembly demoparty, and I can honestly say things seem a lot more logical here than in the UK and the US. Things aren't done for companies, but things aren't done for the people, they seem to have taken the "thinking" approach and thought out what is the most sensible law. I actually prefer Helsinki to any other city on the planet I have visited - the streets are clean, there are no hobo's (they all die every winter) and the people are generally really nice. Maybe it's just my British accent, but they seem genuinely friendly, not just a business type friendlyness. Oh, and I have yet to see an ugly Finnish girl/woman under 30 ;)
