"Non-profit also means that you spend as much as you get."
Not accurate either actually. Many nonprofits have reserve funds. However, board members are not allowed to take those profits to take an extended vacation or whatever. Nonprofit board members only get warm fuzzies for overseeing the organization. If a nonprofit dissolves, leftover money (profit?) must be given to another nonprofit.
with the lack of comments today? It is almost 10AM, this story was posted around 8:30 and not a single comment is showing? Perhaps it is just my setting or something
Actually, kids don't have more freedom. When I was a kid my parents let me walk all over the neighborhood and explore. I can't image that hapenning today. Video games just make a good babysitter and help us get fat. That's about it.
It is always interesting to see the Mac fans on slashdot. Just think, if there were a story today on the RIAA cracking down on Bit Torrent users, there would be nobody modded up for agreeing that the RIAA should do anything about it. For whatever reason, on Slashdot it is only okay for Apple to use DRM and sue people.
I have to say that I don't think Apple could get anywhere near 50% marketshare by just relasing the OS right now. People are used to using what works and they are creatures of habbit. For the love of God I can't get my Mom to stop using IE and click on Firefox (yes I could play with the shortcut, but that's not the point). While OSX would be a godsend for her computer skills, I cannot imagine her actually taking the effort even if OSX would copy all Windows shortcuts and make sure all of her current programs worked automagically with no risk at all. I think they are right to go with branded hardware first.
That said, I want to run the damn OS on whatever I have lying around. I will pay for it, but I would like that option. I think people like me can appreciate that it wouldn't be supported, but why can't I at least try. Plus, as much as I want to support Apple, I sort of have a no Intel policy and like customizing my desktop PCs. I was really sad to see them go that way. With the markup they make on their hardware, they have no excuse. Though I do appreciate the marketing aspect of the Intel name.
And hey whether its Apple branded hardware or not Mac heads, just remember, "Dude you're getting a Dell!"
>>I nominate that for the "dumb-ass statement of the month" award.
Actually in economics there is such things as monopolistic competition (look it up for yourself if you wish). MS and Apple are both monopolies in that they both have unique products that may compete, but aren't direct replacements for one another.
FYI, you can DIY fix some laptop parts rather easily... mostly. Usually (I stress usually) you can swap drives and cd-roms. You have to attach and detach the outside bevel parts with tiny screwdrivers. Yes, the potential for screwing up bigtime is there (I've done it). Once you get used to working on the little guys, they aren't that bad. Ebay has a lot of replacement parts available. Nowadays, upgrading the RAM is pretty well thought-out. You used to have to rip the whole thing apart and pray it went back together properly. Unfortunately, the lcds are mostly proprietary, though you might get lucky. I've had one that was interchangeable with another laptop, but that's it.
Of course, you usually can't change the video card (with the exception of one Dell model I read about), but who uses a laptop for serious gaming anyway?
Actually on my webstie, beconnected.org I interviewed both sides of the debate. Pimental does leave out the animal feed. However, up to that point, many of the pro and con studies do have similar numbers. I don't know the answer to this, but how much more animal feed would you get if you didn't spend time, $, and fossil energy to create ethanol in the first place?
A lot of Pimental rebutters also like to say X will be done to improve plants to Y efficiency, but much of it is pie in the sky. None of these numbers have really changed since I last reported on this so I think that's the answer.
Also, pimental doesn't find biodiesel to be an energy loser like corn-based ethanol. (You didn't say that, but someone else did.) Biodiesel (including some of the veggie car types of things) is something we really ought to look into more. Sadly, the US govt wants to practically do away with diesel cars by 2007. We'll be saving the environment by burning more fossil fuels! Go Congress!
Don't get me started on how manly people think they are in big trucks and SUVs (burning reg gas) that can't even drive standard transmissions. You you are soooo manly, though even my grandma could drive your stupid-looking Dodge Dakota. Standard transmissions often give you an MPG or three AND more power, more control, less brake wear/ability to stop more or less w/out breaks if needed, BETTER off-road/bad conditions/snow driving AND are easier/cheaper to repair than automatic transmissions. But yes, Hummers with auto transmissions are certainly manlier.
Oh and diesels have better torque and are better on gas. That's great for city and off-road driving, but try to find an SUV with standard trans, diesel and 4WD/AWD. Good luck. Only the biggest vehicles come with anything like that. You can't find a normal sized car or small SUV with those options. Why? I guess it is more important to burn more fuel as that must somehow be better for the earth. Also, why are we not looking at diesel hybrid engines with standard trans? Same answer I suppose.
Sorry, back on topic...
Cellulosic ethanol (which is different than corn-based ethanol) is only really being produced by Biogen a company in Canada. I went there and interviewed the director of the plant as well. The plant is experimental. I assume they will build a new larger plant in the future, but cellulosic ethanol so minute that it is not really even a factor when you go to the pump these days. I hope it will be in the future.
Yeah it is funny, but I have to thank MSN for giving me #3 in my category. Nowhere to be found on Google. Competition by Microsoft in this area isn't bad guys.
BTW, I love the Supremes. But sadly, I don't work for them or their business (Motown or whatever). I do work near the Supreme Court though. I realize the Supremes are getting older, but they still look way better than Rehnquist and friends.
Last time I checked I used AMD for pro audio applications. In fact, I've won more awards than many other audio producers I know (not that it has anything to do with AMD... or doesn't or whatever). My 700 mhz PC worked fine. I still use a 1.2 GHZ AMD PC as well too. I've done some corporate video work on both PCs as well.
Unless Intel gets better and cheaper, I'll be sticking with AMD.
Hacking the X-Box is okay for fun and (sometimes profit). When Real does the same thing against Apple, people here say, "Go Apple! Sue them under the DMCA!"
That's it for for me guys. Good luck with that free software thingy.
Wow! I thought people on this site would have been a little more understanding. Believe it or not there are other places in the world (such as Africa) where high-speed Internet is not the norm or even available. Plus if you stream audio, any attempt to lower bandwidth is a plus as it lowers your bills.
Get over yourselves please.
By the way, did you ever notice the lack of multimedia even on this site? Why might that be? Hmmm...
Oooh they lure you in with a cheap printer and THEN nail you with the ink/toner costs.
Oh yeah IBM... I'm gonna buy your $500,000 printer and then go to a 3rd party toner provider!
That'll show you!
They do tend to smell more than others leading me to suspect they release CO and CO2 quite a bit from their anuses.
I'm all for using models in policy debate. They have to be more fun to look at than Dennis Hastert!

Doesn't that make Americans more ignorant? Yes, Americans were already pretty ignorant before Fox News, but boy look at 'em now!
if they are stupid enough to pay for their virtual items back. This is just too pathetic. Only on slashdot.

But, but, but... Microsoft NEVER INNOVATES!

My advice for long life, keep the CPU fan clean.

Ass Post!
Actually it is vice versa. Toyota makes the hybrid engine for the Escape SUV (and I assume the Explorer too).

What about *BSD?
Just kidding, but what about Apple and Solaris on the same basic hardware? This is very interesting. I'm going to try Solaris ASAP.
Oh man you beat me to it!

I wasn't worried about this until I saw this under your first link.
"Cheating at computer games could be made more difficult."
Now I'm screwed!
This is getting to be worse than broadcast TV with all these reruns!
I hope it's not a one-button mouse! Regardless of what the apple UI fans think, if I was half-mouse, I'd want the up/down scroll wheel.
Think about it, would you want to be able to do more than one trick?
Wow what a bunch of killjoys who can't get an obvious joke! I found it amusing.
Ummm...
