I realize that BeOS is really popular and widely-used, but didn't anyone notice that Sun is planning to open-source Solaris? Somehow I think that is bigger news.
Just get Justin Timberlake to do a cameo! Hey maybe he can even bring along the other guys from N'Sync and have a reunion too! Wow that would kick ass!
and I wrote a story about this months ago. Here's what you Linux geeks won't like. So far it won't work in Linux. That's mainly a driver issue with the card or really that there is no Linux driver (that I am aware of). Also I think that it is installed (even in Windows) in a funny way. It has to connect under dial-up networking?!?!
start selling roms as a download for other platforms. Nintendo and the others make their money on games played on the PC and not so much on console sales (though the idea is to keep you locked in).
People could play their games where they wanted to and then they'd still make $$. It would give new life to their older games too. Then they'd have more right to crackdown. I have no desire to buy the latest Nintendo system, PS2, XBOX, etc., but if my computer could emulate them, I might buy a few cool games. I have a portable laptop afterall. Why do I need more portable crap?
Oh yeah! That's the solution. Dad, just run Turbotax, Autocad and Quicken with WINE. It's really easy. Ahh forget Linux. Real Men (or whatever) use BSD. That's what my parents use! (Would I lie?) It's great for USB scanners.
However, I do know that you can always buy one with a wheel, but if Apple is the UI leader, why not have extra buttons on their stock mice other than it is easier to use one button?
Instead of turning on the TV to watch whatever BS is on, I find it much more effective to record and watch the shows i actually want to see later on. That way you can speed or skip commercials. You get the same feeling of satisfaction if you watch an hour-long show in 40 minutes than sitting through the commercials and stuff.
At least from a legal standpoint, both companies share the patent on the technology. I'm pretty sure that AMD and Intel both had input. Why else would Intel be able to release a 64-bit CPU at roughly the same time (not the Itamium of course). Did AMD have more to do with the design? Yes, but if they were smarter at Intel they would have taken some credit or at least tried to outmarket AMD a little better.
That's okay though, I'm glad AMD is still in it. Competition is good and once Intel really starts cranking out X86-64 chips prices will go down. We all win. I'll be buying AMD though.;)
I love open source and what it allows you to accomplish. However, open source does allow some foul play to go on. (Sure things can happen with closed source too.) PHPNuke is a good example of a huge community, but a program with a lot of holes. I don't mean that as an insult. It's perhaps impossible to keep up with all the changes all the time and someone will always figure out some new exploit. I think it is naive to assume that everyone who looks at code does so with the hope of finding improvements. How many times to PHPNuke sites get defaced? It is partly the fault of the operator? Yes, but some exploits are so new that you don't know what to defend against. The PHPnuke.org site has itself been brought down several times and the creator of PHPnuke has seriously considered developing a more professional closed-source product several times.
So you can hate me now. I don't really care.
I think the real question is whether or not it will play old X-Box games, but can it steal Sony's thunder by emulating (or otherwise simply playing) their games. Now that would be smart. Not many other (paying customers) care if it will run Windows, Linux or the T1-99's OS.
While I agree that MD is behind the times, I do a lot of recording on minidisc. The battery life with some of their NetMD models can't be beat (8+ hours of record time) and the Atrac compression is pretty decent sounding (good enough for radio production and most music production).
Some MP3 recorders can record in uncompressed Wav format, but I have yet to see one that can do that without destroying the batteries in the process. Maybe there is a good flash-rom recorder that is broadcast quality that I'm not aware of. (Please post here if you know of one.) However, all of the HD based MP3 players that can record (that I've seen) they either have terrible quality for a source recording (usually the max is 160 kbs MP3 which is fine for downloads, but not pro audio) or you get 15 minutes of recording time on standard batteries when trying to record sound in uncompressed Wav format.
Now if SONY makes these players able to record for extended periods of time with 1GB of storage for $7 as opposed to several hundred for 1GB of fast (32X) flash media, I'll ante up. MD has been the most reliable recording format for use in the field IMO. The media is also damn tough to beat up. In fact, the discs will last much longer in storage than CD-Rs.
Yes this is a niche, but if SONY doesn't ignore this niche, they might have some more buyers. Recently they've been removing the mic inputs on their lower end consumer MD players. I hope there is a version of this with a mic-in.
Why does he keep getting modded down. He's only trying to help. It is pretty funny actually. (Well okay funny the first 50 times.) Slashdot needs to lighten up.

"Ultimately, it becomes a time and resource sink the likes of which is only matched by/dev/null, all the while funding MS and driving them to an eventual 3.0 or 4.0 release, which will be Decent..."
Wow that's how they made the game Decent? I have to hand it to Microsoft there. If 1.0 is a cruddy filesystem and by 3.0 or so you have a good game, that's what I call innovation.
Actually there are many studies that show Ethanol isn't that beneficial to the environment. It burns cleaner out of the tailpipe, but consider the agriculture, refinement, cost, politics (subsidies), and you're just about back at square one. Also you don't get as many MPG from ethanol because there is a higher Oxygen content.
I don't think people here had that much sympathy for the young minor from Quebec? Her parents are responsible in this case, though I suppose it is still bad PR for the RIAA.
It is interesting to see Fox News coming to the rescue here. I thought it would be more like....
"Evil non-conservative parents in an inner city neighborhood encourage child to steal music..."
Is someone asleep at the wheel at FOX? Geeze they should hire me to prevent these liberal whiney stories from making it to the air! At the very least, put the right spin on it Fox!!
And Pet Food needs to be sold online again to reinvigorate the stagnant economy! Oh wait... and we need online grocery stores, because that's how everyone will buy their vegetables. I could go on, but it is too easy.
Is it just me, but isn't the value in comics related to how long you keep them wrapped in plastic?...Oh wait I see your point. Wrap CD-R's with flash cartoons on them in plastic... That's it! Okay my mistake.

This isn't a bash against conservatives, but please stop letting Rush Limbaugh do your science homework for you. (He is most noted for saying this.) On the flipside, I wouldn't ask Jim Carrey about much on science either.

Salma in 4D! Now we're talking. :)

Cool Edit Pro/Adobe Audition actually has a feature for this type of thing. You can make biofeedback type of things with it.
Well that doesn't seem easy, but COOL it works. :)

Oh no I pissed off the Macheads again!

If you write free code, then how can an Indian programmer be any cheaper.
What are you guys worried about anyway?

Best quote: Gates 'suggested to Canepa that perhaps they could federalize the car by buying a number of sacrificial 959s to "crash and test."'
If somebody knows how to crash, it is Microsoft.

Don't take my word on it. Look at what our national laboratories say.

I do miss the sock puppet commercials.
Shouldn't Spiderman be prounounced more like Goldman? What I mean is not saying it like it's two words (Spider Man).
Then again, we should have a superhero called GoldMan (Gold Man)! That would kick ass! Why didn't Stan Lee think of that?
I'll say it again...
