All that for a cost! With Linux all that is builtin and comes with it.... With Windows you have to buy Office With Windows you have to by virus protection With Windows by A ghosting app. The functionality is there with windows but it relys on third party vendors to fill in the gaps.
You don't have to buy Office for Windows, you can download Open Office for Windows just like you can for Linux.
You think all those apps on Linux are from a single vendor? If MS tried to bundle all that with the OS they'd be hauled into court again.
It is just hard to believe that anybody reads those damn things, so their purposes just seem to be to make one NOT want to see the site.
It's just like spam mail, they work on volume. The ad companies that use this will likely only use it on sites with extremely high page views or unique visitor counts and play the percentages.
If you offer to sell shit to 1 person you're almost sure to be turned down, if you offer it to 1,000,000 sooner or later you'll find someone to buy it.
Which is what I said. Some people are choosing to commit crimes rather than work. There are always jobs to be had, they may not be something you want to do and may not pay well but many people would prefer to work two or three jobs rather than depend on others or commit crimes.
Just keep in mind some of us might like brigandry, highway robbery, banditry, just plain thieving and other old timey ways of earning one's keep as well as or better than the new fangled ways the educated folks is always tellin' us 'r better'n the old tried an' true ways.
With the crime rate where it is it seems many are taking that option even with welfare and unemployment.
Why get a real job when you can sell crack, right?
How about this one. I make bolt cutters. A shady character buys a bolt cutter from me and cuts the padlock off someone elses shed and steals his lawn mower. Am I, the bolt cutter manufacturer, to be held responsible?
That's exactly the argument that some anti firarm groups are making when they sue the manufacturer for crimes committed by someone 5 steps removed - and many legal transactions - from the firearm maker.
Is it stupid? Yes. Are greedy people trying it? Yes.
Is it a downgrade if the product with 100% functionality (aka features) doesn't run? That would seem to be 100% features / 0% functionality vs 90% features / 100% functionality.
I hope more none software companies come to realize this and take that bit of advice. I've been in the software industry for several years, mostly testing some admin work, and frankly I'm getting tired of it. I would love to work in another field/industry and yet be able to put this computer experience/knowledge to use.
It's quite obvious where Id's market lies...not with Microsoft products.
You mean MS products like Windows? Id's main market is on Microsoft products.

I'm quite happy with Windows Media Player 9. It installs cleanly (no unpacking, scripts or stupid config-file tweaking), comes with the most common codecs and both recognizes and automatically downloads the rest.
It also can't be un-installed since they claim it's now part of the OS. I hope you like it because you're stuck with it until you format/reinstall.
I'm sure all the government overhead of starting something like that would eat up the 97 billion in a year. They'd have to create entire new agencies, then more enforcement agencies, congressional comitees, senate oversight comitees, and so on and so on...Then they'd raise the taxs saying that $48/year wasn't enough and they'd raise that tax because of course some people can't afford it.
Open Office is available on more than just Linux you know. The majority of the public isn't much aware of ANYTHING that isn't spoon fed to them. The first step is to get a reasonable alternative to MS products, which OO certainly is for most people. Once people get used to looking for something other than "Windows certified" then they'll be more open to looking at alternatives to Windows.
The Slammer worm showed that even Microsoft knows that it's patches can be unhealthy for production systems.
You can't make that assumption. You could just as easily say that the Slammer worm shows that Microsoft employees are just as lax about applying security fixs to every server as the rest of the world is.
It's not puzzling if you've been to any management traning seminars. At those classses managers are told that productivity goes up when they show an interest in their subordinates, that when they ask how they're doing etc they feel more needed and work harder.
That might work in many fields but not where maintaining a continous train of thought is virtually required.
I'm in the same position. Good popup blocking and tabs are what got me to switch to Mozilla. Crazybrowser has those for IE, but it's got a rather ugly interface and while it works was obviously designed by a hobbyiest not a professional.
http://www.spaceref.com/news/viewpr.html?pid=8061 claims that much of the space shuttle is based on obsolete technology. I've also read a couple articles recently about how much of the US space program is using technology from the 70's, hardly the fanciest best equipment.
Considering how tight they claim the budget is at NASA how do you figure they're dumping money into the fanciest, best equipment?
Other than that I agree with you that sending robots/probes there is much cheaper and safer than sending people.
No kidding, that seems to have worked rather well for Id, and that was before really wide spread use of the Internet. I downloaded DOOM via 14.4 modem off Compuserve, how much easier would it be to distribute your shareware version today?
A good or great game using the business model Id used/uses will almost surely take off (no such thing as a sure thing).
Setting up the database connection to an Access db using the Windows version of OO was easy, at least easy to someone with even a minimal idea that a DSN was needed to form the connection. Once that was done, which really wasn't more than a few clicks, there was nothing to editing tables and running SQL queries.
The interface that OO used wasn't as easy as Access, at least to someone who's used Access and not OO for this task, but it wasn't impossible and seemed to be a viable alternative to someone wanting to get away from MS products.
The amount of work you're getting done counts, not the hours you are at your desk. Or is it really like Dilbert in RL?
Unfortunately in the real world it's most often the perception of work done rather than the actual work done that is rewarded and the larger the corporation the more that seems to be true.
Actually no, credit ratings MAY in fact be accurate. Not ARE. The last time I refinanced my house the credit check showed that there was a lein on a piece of property I didn't own, had never owned and didn't know the person who did own it. Now that is a mark against the credit record and it was 100% inaccurate. People have fouled up credit reports all the time through no fault of their own, someone may have stolen their credit card and wracked up bills, they may be the victem of identity theft and have their credit screwed beyond belief, again through no fault of their own.

There's a sucker born every minute.
How much prestige can they get for writing second rate software? I don't recall many people being very impressed by second rate anything.

Yahoo groups do this too. Click on a link to see a message and you get a page with an ad, and a link to the message.
Others are obviously making other choices.

Why get a real job when you can sell crack, right?
Judging by the website listed in the article they must have some pretty damn loose ideas about what constitutes looking for a job.
8 months off work (average) and only 3 interviews? I wouldn't consider roughly 1 interview every 3 months doing much looking for a job.
That's exactly the argument that some anti firarm groups are making when they sue the manufacturer for crimes committed by someone 5 steps removed - and many legal transactions - from the firearm maker.
Is it stupid? Yes. Are greedy people trying it? Yes.
Isn't that exactly the same as a downgrade ?

Only if you were the one bringing the impending doom I would think. It's not like you would be about to cause their server to over load afterall.

Should they be denied a job because of that?
