  1. Waiting for GPL V4 on Survey Says GPLv3 Is Shunned · · Score: 2, Insightful

It doesn't seem fair to attack Microsoft with GPL V3 without also going after Google. Google gets to use GPL software without ever having to release source because they're not selling software, they're selling services. If Microsoft did that GPL V4 would come out faster than you can say Free Software.

  2. If MS did embrace ODF on OOXML Denied INCITS V1 Approval · · Score: 3, Insightful

Wouldn't we just complain about them "embracing and extending" ODF? Anyone remember J++. They tried to make their own version of Java that compiled against the JVM and Sun sued them. So instead they went and built .NET and C#. Now we have C# and Java to choose from. In a way the competition has been good. In a way it kinda sucks. I can almost guarantee that if MS said "we're gonna support ODF" we'd be predicting how they're going to embrace and extend it.

ABC announced that they want to circumvent fast forward on PVRs. Apple announced a new media PC to replace the TV (and MS's media PC). Then I read this article about adware/spyware being a huge business with real investors and legitimate companies buying in to the idea.

Then I add it all up and realize that in a few years my TV is going to be hijacked by popup ads that make me punch the monkey before I'm able to watch any of the tv shows I've recorded.

The other thing I noticed is how much damage this has done to microsoft. MS should be doing all they can to hope the Attorney General wins this law suit. Most of my family has "switched(tm)" for this very reason. Either to lin or mac, but away from win.

My fear with this idea has always been that if I provided a proxy for others, say, people in China, then others could also use my proxy for downloading RIAA songs and MPAA movies and kiddie porn and hacking into the state department to not get a photo of a ufo.

I guess this system works on trust, you only give your proxy info to people you trust. But I don't know. I hope they have solved this potential problem, because it's the one thing keeping me from running a public proxy.

the only companies that don't use their dominance of old technology to get rich on new technology are the RIAA and the MPAA. The oil/automobile industry would jump on that other stuff if they could. In fact, ironically enough, they are the leading investors in alternative energy.

When MS tried this, we all got PO'ed saying "great, and then one day they'll decide you have to pay per month to access your own files, and the next day you'll pay per file, and then eventually you'll pay per letter typed/read/modified"

If I was right to have irrational fears about online-office when MS tried it in 1999, I'm sure I'm right to have the same irrational fears now that google is trying it, even if I do trust Google, deep down, to do the right thing if given the opportunity. (Scientology and other law suits took that opportunity away from them, but when they've had the choice between good and evil they've always chosen good).
