  1. this is horrible on IBM Snags Leading Indian Outsourcing Firm · · Score: 1

I was 30 days from being axed from my call-center helpdesk position. Thankfully I found another internal position working with contracts, away form the IT field, but the other 27 members on my old team weren't as lucky. Now I get to hear transfers from these indian cheap-hires with customers complaining about how thankful they are to have gotten transferred to someone who can speak english and can understand what the rep is trying to say. Dell learned hard lesson, you get what you pay for, and soon, I hope IBM will learn it's lesson all it's own. Until you experience working with these outsourced help, you will never know the impact it has on a business in terms of customer satisfaction or the many times I have to hit mute to laugh because one rep calls himself "Dan" for short when his real name is nasahary"dan"apeptlan, and he is forced to tell customers his name is Dan for the sake of saving everyone some fustration just from his GREETING alone!

  4. My Hack: Rice/Model car/Motor on What (non-PC) Hardware Do You Hack? · · Score: 2, Interesting

I took an old remote control car's motor and put it inot a model car to construct my own pulley system to make the car hop up and down just like the real cars on the road with hydraulic suspension setups.

So I took the motor and attached it inside the car (thank you hot glue gun and glue sticks) and hooked up a "T-model" suspension so that when the motor turns it would wind a string up which pulls the suspension "up" towards the car, thus making the car hop.

Then I took my mothers rice cooker power plug and spliced into it to attach it to the motor. Little did I know at that time in my life (9 years old), the value of toggle switches as well as 120v on a motor that was built to handle no more than a 9v battery. Needless to say, instantaneously after plugging in the rice-cooker plug the car hopped once and then the motor sparked like hell (exploded actually), caught on fire, and melted a hole through the floorpan of my model 1968 Impala.

So in the end my mother slapped me for ruining her power cord, I was out a motor and model car, and my room smelled like burning plastic/metal for 3 days. How I miss my innocent days of playing with electricity.

do what I did one time when my dealine was 2 days away and I thought it was impossible to get some projects done, I had a friend come over to take my DSL modem and cables away. that way i had no surfing but pure hardcore computer work just on the good ol' comp. I usually do work faster with just the radio on and it works fine for me, but I too had that problem with having the web just a click away. So i recommend doing it cold turkey style. Permanently cut yourself off from the web before starting a project or lock yourself in a room with just the computer (and radio if it helps you concentrate much like it does for me). AND REMOVE GAMES FROM YOUR COMPUTER TOO!!!

...and we lost tons of money. We were down for more than 8 hours and no customer could call in to check on their server problem tickets, hospitals needed service and we couldnt get technicians out there...our servers were swamped. This is serious when companies who deal with the lives of idividuals are at risk. Hospitals had ptient databases that couldn't get accessed, nor banks needed techs onsite to install new software or hardware upgrades before the open of business....nothing could get done. This was the first time IBM got hit this hard where it brought down 95 percent of the company globally. Yikes....Now I got back to collecting the hair I've been pulling out for the past 8 hours.
