Most fast-food commercials star teens and are aimed at teens/young adults
Nope, fast food adverts are aimed at the parents or young children, thats why they have silly Hamburglar toys, a kids zone and a health message.
No sign of 13-18 at McDs, and BK are clearly targeting the 18-25 range, with workplace settings and .
establishing their places as hang outs
Did you do know that they design fast food places so that they drive people away after 20 minutes? The seats are hard, the music loops (and is pretty annoying anyway, we used to switch the tape when I did a summer job flipping burgers). The last thing these places want is a bunch of teens driving away other customers.
Most video games are marketted toward teens.
I agree, but you only see titles aimed at older players (Championship Manager, WWII games, The Sims) in the mainstream media. Stuff like Halo and WoW will be pushed in niche media, like gamer mags and review sites.
If you hit the 18-year-old mark, you're likely to attract people anywhere from 13 to 28
Perhaps for some products, but the overlap is tiny. A 25 year old is going to be looking at cars, consumer electronics, and financial products, a 15 year old is looking to buy music and stuff to impress his/her mates.
Take a look at which music gets advertised on mainstream TV, its all Muse, Jack Johnson, KT Tunstall and aimed at the 20-30 segment.
Seriously, its a bit 'media studies' but have a critical look at the adverts on busses, and on mainstream TV (e.g. Lost or Buffy) and have a little thing about whether a 15year old is being targetted by the advert.
In fact, that's why no company anywhere gears their advertising towards teens.
Have a critical look at adverts, and you'll find very few adverts aimed at teens, simply because they are not naive enough to want something just cos its on telly, but not rich enough to support more sophisticated or mass marketing. There are exceptions to this when the market is dominated by teens (used to be soda pop, and is now phones+iPods), but look at banks, clothes, toys, food, etc and you dont see any serious attempt to directly advertise to the 15-18 markets, its all indirect and non-age specific brand building.
Teens are too easily swayed by peer pressure. If you build a quality product, its still too random whether they will decide on you product or not.
I'd say that they only quit because someone put pressure on them, not because they want to stop making money on those transactions.
Possibly because Visa in the US is being floated on the stock exchange. I guess that is because the USA is moving in a rather insular direction, and they didnt want Visa in the rest of the world to be hit by legal problems in the USA. See the recent problems with online gambling for an example of the kind of exposures companies like Visa have if they wish to do business in the USA.
Confirmation of this would be if the non_USA Visa goes back to servicing allofmp3.
Its not the modern gardeners that have caused the problems, but the Victorians who introduced the invasive species that are causeing problems in the UK. Particular problem plants are Rhododendron and Japanese Knotweed.
Unfortunately, a solid core of fuckwits still raom the garden centers of olde Englande. There was some guy on TV last year proudly displaying his Knotweed, not really understanding that his grass clippings were controlled waste and required special documents to be allowed to legally dispose of it.
Evolution is not about massive shifts in genetics within a single generation.
It can be, just look at Downs Syndrome or dwarfism or albinism to see how much a simple genetic change can cause quite large body morphisms. Imagine if some unfortunate had all 3 plus excessive hairyness. They'd look like me.
Unfortunatly, its not very entertaining for us grown-ups to watch a bunch of brand-addicted teenagers trying to convince each other that amd/nike/microsoft/apple/linux is better than the opposition.
So what if intel have finally produced a chip that beats AMD in speed/price/watts, next year AMD will produce a chip that beats intel (or not).
You should look at the specs (and supplier reliability) before buying whatever suits your needs. Dont just sign up to one brand forever for fear of appearing to have made a poor decision in the past. Otherwise you'll be the one buying the Sony MP3 player.
chopsticks: made of wood, goes with the fork analogy, parallel sticks symbolise parallel development, looks good when chinese chicks stick them in thier hair.
the Gentoo method of having every updated system be the latest version was an innovation that should have been thought of sooner.
Thats how my gentoo install got so broken so quickly, that I hadent even finished configuring before updates were starting to break the system.
Having said that, Mandriva is a long way from perfect (e.g. they seem to have rushed through the QA again, I barly had time to install the beta before RC2 was out.
My current picks are Ubuntu for the ultimate newbie (Web/Mail/Office) user, Mandriva for newbies those that will want to install and configure samba or other simple services, anything but Gentoo for experienced users, and Gentoo for people I hate.
It is slowly sinking in. I lurk on a financial site where in teh last 2 years the computer help bulletin board has gone from exactly this 'quality == purchase costs' attitude to the opposite oppinion. Now firefox, AVG and OO.o are the default answer to many questions.
Most of the computer literate fools have moved to a FOSS or shareware application, and informal 'how do I do this' questions get answered quite quickly for FOSS and shareware, whilst IE and MS Office questions may even go unanswered. A few have even moved to Linux, but they seem to disspaear from view soon after (dont need the support perhaps?), although there is still quite a bit of stiff resistance to any 'use linux' answers.
Actually, us investors like to diversify into a range of sectors, to protect our investments against bubbles such as this online gambling one.
Not that there are that many scientific companies in the FTSE250, I can only think of GSK. Most medical research is done in institutions or in startups funded by specialist investors.
You could invest in Huntingdon Life Sciences, they need backers.
I had problems with a USB keyboard about 1 year ago (Knoppix and Gentoo but not Mandriva2006). It has since dissapeared (Gentoo, Suse and Ubuntu all worked as far as the keyboard was concerned.)
Cant you just replace the car stereo with one that plays MP3s off of a harddrive?
You dont have to carry a radio from your house and plug it into your car, so why have do you have to physically carry your ripped tracks between house and car?
"iPod integration" is actually "audio disintegration", your iTunes tracks are not integratable with any other media devices.
I seen Wing Commander, Lara Croft and Resident Evil, and I thought each one was reasonably watchable. Not as good as similar films like Star Wars, Raiders of the Lost Ark and 28 Days Later, but not a wasted evening either.
I suspect the truth about game movie suckage is that too many people are bringing alot of baggage to the film. Non-gamers are immediately sniffy about such low-brow entertainment, Gamers look down on the films because the plot is even more linear than the game, Movie Buffs are comparing it to the best of the competition and Genre fans have seen spacebattle/adventure/zombie flicks done before.
So what if the acting is a bit wooden? Star Wars wasnt exactly celulose-free.
I still recommend it to newbies for the following reasons:
Suse makes it a bit harder to install media players, and makes it hard to update the system from the command line.
Suse has fewer 'entertainment' packages.
Redhat is even more business oriented than Suse.
Mandriva's partitioning tool has the best useability. and this is the step a newbie is most likely to get wrong.
Ubuntu, in its vanilla install, has very inferior configuration tools. To do anything sophisticated (E.g. A static IP address) you need to vi stuff in/etc.
Ubuntu is gnome based, I think KDE is better. I think new users will get confused over kubuntu, edbuntu, etcbuntu.
Note that I do not dis any of Suse, Redhat or Ubuntu. These are all mighty fine distros, and I run Suse and Ubuntu on a laptop and server. I even think Ubuntu is better than Mandriva for some newbies, as they wont want to do any configuring after the install.
I dont recommend gentoo as I have tried it twice. Install took days, common hardware was unsupported out of the box, configuration was all about editing/etc files, and there were regular fuck-ups that just broke the system when you tried updating packages. Its also increasingly pointless to compile now that 64bit is here and distros produce 64bit versions.
Manriva's weaknesses are:
Horrible artwork.
Some poor decisions to use bleeding edge releases of KDE (2006 had quite a few niggles caused by going to 3.4 with its API changes).
Some configuration dialogs have poor useability (e.g. setting up printers).
A seriously deficient layout to the club pages. Its really hard to find anything useful on them, and the whole site is confusing.
I'm assuming that there is some die hard nutjob out there with two children named Procul and Harum that filled in most of the information in that page.
We had a third child.
We considered calling her "Keith" after the lead singer, but considered that was innapropriate and so named her "BJ" in honour of the drummer.
How does this tally with a previous story about multi-core architectures being ideal for realtime ray-tracing in games? Is anyone working on a Ray-Tracing evuivalent of OpenGL?
until a new, even worse, thing supplants ISO 9000.
"Extreme" methodologies, which are rapidly morphing into "Slash development time, skip the testing" methodologies.
ISO9000 used to be 'Know what you are doing and how to do it' before it became "document everything, including your documentation procedures, especially the procedures for documenting how you document the docuemntation".
