  1. Re:Ridiculous kHz on New Digital Audio Formats · · Score: 3, Insightful

i think (tin foil hat on) the plan has been to compress (dynamically compress) the fuck out of audio cds for the last few years so that the new formats DO sound better - if only because they are mastered properly (rather than clipped to hell). it's like what i've heard about the DTS track on some DVDs having the bass turned up to fool people into thinking it sounds better than the AC3 (this may be true anyway, i don't know).. or maybe that's just a byproduct of the loudness race, whatever, it's convenient: they've got a whole market for selling things again right there, cunning bastards.

Riight. is this the best way to do this? What's to stop them adding political sites or anything else they don't like to this, either officially (management endorsed) or surreptitiously from someone inside BT, or someone inside taking money from someone outside with a vested interest.. i don't wear a tinfoil hat but it's not that unlikely. Shouldn't there be a standard page saying something like "this page has been blocked by BT for x reason. if you believe it has been blocked in error, contact...." etc.? it could be that the page won't just time out or look like it never existed and this is sloppy newspaper reporting.. anyone?

Another point/question, BT is the carrier for a large number of ADSL suppliers (like um, mine for instance), will they be effected? My first reaction to this story was "i don't care", then "good, stop the pedophiles" and then "wait a minute, how's this going to work, is it a publicity/goodwill stunt, could it have negative affects even"

yes, you are actually more right than you think to include the N64 - its games were nearly all 32bit code - the 64 was basically a marketing gimmick :) (for evidence of this, see that most N64 games can run on a 32-bit emulated r4300i core). So feel free to add Zelda OoT and the other classics from that system (Goldeneye? Mario Kart? Wipeout64 was basically the Playstation version with analogue control, w00t) to the list for this era ;)

exactly.. and because of this arms race and inability for people in charge to see the wood for the trees, it'll end up like the situation we have with audio CDs (or is consumer opposition reversing the tide yet?), where they're f**ing up quality that humans can perceive in the name of "copy protection", but all that's happening is they're pissing of their customers (you know, the people who pay to go see movies) and not stopping piracy, as someone gets a clean un-fucked-up copy (either before the protection is applied, or by figuring out how to remove it). I already find the dots ("crap codes") annoying - i go to the cinema for the great picture and sound - if you take that away, what's the point? i urge the industry, just in case anyone's reading, not to get into this arms race, for their sake and ours (speaking for the movie-going public, not for pirates). While you're at it, remove the damn "don't copy" messages, and do more simultaneous worlwide releases, please.

this comes back to something i was thinking long ago, that the real reason the industry hated P2P is the loss of control, the failure of the one-size-fits promotion/mega-hit that would come from more educated consumers with wide interests. We can't totally blame the industry though. i get the impression joe six-pack doesn't want to know what's going on in the rest of the world. the attituate to foreign languages & cultures seems a big part of it. it's a damn shame. all we can do is keep exploring & pushing our favourite bands and wait for the industry to kill itself :)

You just have to look a bit harder if you want to turn yourself on. (I won't link to audioscrobbler because they're having server problems atm and that would just be mean if I got modded up!). Most of my favourite music now is coming out of non-english speaking parts of the world - south america and the basque region are particularly juicy atm imho, and there's many more places producing great innovative music. speaking multiple languages is optional :) you just haven't heard any of it, most likely.. what i find incredible is if you go to these places you can buy "our" (usa/uk) music everywhere, and yet the most you get in a music store here is a pathetic little "world" section, that in no way reflects what the people there are actually listening to. why is this? are we (as a race of white caucasion middle class brits/americans) so close minded? what the %*^%& has gone wrong?! I was utterly bored with music until I discovered this. Seriously recommend others do the same. none of it would have been possible with free (in both senses) P2P networks. Right, i'm really tired and it took ages to write this but hope it inspires someone to go hunting.. listen to Cafe Tacuba, listen to Fermin Muguruza, heh well that's just where i started i dont' want to get into specific bands 'cos it's all a matter of taste but there's something for everyone with an open mind i swear :)

I find this very sad and pointless. (I hope it doesn't do the Xvid credibility any harm). What a shame after all that work they've put in to get to v1.0, to have someone **** all over them like that. i think his question was "are they playable in a DVD player that has MPEG-4 compatibility"

The answer is: that depends which encoding options were used, and which the player supports!. There are a vast number of options, but to make this understandable to the user, we have what are called "profiles". a common target is "advanced simple profile", IIRC, which is a base level of features that most players support. these can be selected as presets within the encoder config, to make things easier. many players, for example, do not support GMC or Qpel. this is not a disaster. for more details on what this means please see a good site such as Doom9. some players also have stuttering problems when certain parameters are exceeded. to avoid this i'd recommended to make encodes yourself (which you should be doing from your own DVDs under fair use anyway!) to ensure quality control and playback on your systems. Doom9 have an excellent forum for asking questions such as this, but your Q will probably mostly be answered in the FAQs first :) be warned there's quite a learning curve. I don't yet have a standalone player but i have some experience encoding for PCs and am considering purchasing one when I next buy a DVD player.

hmm, i'm looking at that pic on LikSang of the iQue mulitplayer adapter, which costs 70 USD, and wondering how is that better than an N64? Why not just put the console in that box and plug it into the TV - it looks like the multiplayer adapter does plug into the TV (rather than controller->TV) anyway! You can get N64 game carts for very little on eBay now. Apart from the "gee-wiz" factor and nice design what other reasons are there to spend so much (relatively) for this kit? I mean if you live in a country with the N64 available (and now officially "dead", although i remain a fan & user), which most of us do? (although eBay gets about everywhere, even poor countries, doesn't it).

Also note that the z-trigger isn't on the back of this and it's probably heavier to hold.. all stuff that interests me anyway :)

Despite all this negativity i applaud Nintendo for re-inventing their old hardware in smaller, neater designs... now can we just have a built in screen and call it a proper portable N64 please :) (j/k, the future is the GBA 2, or whatever they call it, with low power processor).
