wtf is imaginarygirlfriends.com, i have to check this out. .
OH... MY... GOD.. yes, you pay girls (through them.. they're kind of a 'clean pimp') to pretend to be your (presumably long distance) girlfriend.
excuse me while i go outside and keel over laughing. not at you, but that this really exists. (or have i been had?). someone pinch me, this can't be real. (and no, not because it's what i've been looking for:p). i don't even know where to start with this. thanks for the heads up.
oh the embarrasment of having to go to your bank and complain about your dealing with imaginarygirlfriends.com.. i feel for you buddy, i really do... mod this one up +1 informative (slashdot is missing the necessary option methinks..)
yep. here's a little story (don't get excited, it's about paper). when i scan i often lose the edges of a document and have to redo the job. the difference between Legal (my scanner/software default) and the A4 paper in my printer is just subtle enough that at a glance the copy looks ok. later go to use the copy and.. woops, there's a bit missing. grrr, very grr!
damn you! i was going to get the karma. only i waited to test it;) yes the clip plays fine with MPC and QT alternative. quality is nice. the movie looks ok. we probably won't get it in the UK until next year, ho-hum...:/
"Feather oscillations were actively damped by the pilot"
not just a pair, but some skill too. IANAAE (... aerospace engineer) but AFAIK those tasks are normally handled by computers running very high speed feedback loops. sounds impressive. would the 'plane have been ripped apart if he hadn't damped those oscillations correctly? i've no idea:)
i got two windows. the first one would keep on trying to open a second, but once closed nothing came back. firefox 0.8, proxomitron with JD's basic config. also lots of popup blocked warnings from standard firefox blocker.
Interesting points. *My* definition of non-kiddie porn is if the girl is post-pubescent. that's obvious in just about any photo. so while i may have girls under [insert legal age in your area here] in my collection, i certainly don't have any pre-pubescent girl pics, and hence, not what most people would call kiddie porn. (and the reason for this, btw, is not that i'm too worried about the law, but that i don't find such pictures attractive). Any lawyers know the score on this topic? Whatever it is, I'm betting you wouldn't get prosecuted unless the girl *looks* pre-pubescent. I'm not taking the moral high-ground (hah! i'm a dirty wanker!) but this ethical code is what works for me.
oh great. so far from having no effect "other than rebooting machines", as some were saying/assuming, this is potentially costing lives (like flight controllers, they are trained to use paper backup systems, but this has got to be less efficient, or of course, they wouldn't use computers). The coastguards are great people, highly stretched, with less resources than many companies. Do we need a better demonstration of why these things are serious? (Note i'm not attributing blame here).
quick answer cos i wan't to go to bed, but a movie doesn't have to be played. with a video game you need high framerates (and probably crisp visuals?) because you have to respond in real time to user input, and this goes into a feedback loop (input affects visuals which affects input affects visuals and so on = playing the game). The timings for all this are incredibly tight (image on screen, processed by brain, finger responds, game reads button press, game updates screen, repeat), hopefully someone can come in with some figures. also if you've ever watched an IMAX movie you'll know that double framerate can look a lot more realistic. there are issues such as the framerate of a movie being constant, frames being shown whole, people being used to 24fps movies (to the point where games use it as an effect in itself), the low light levels in theatres, yada yada yada. In short, I think there are sufficient differences between games and movies that it's not a great idea to just make games 24fps and give them loads of blur (and you're right movies do have loads):)
ok but I do speak english and what does "phun" mean? I looked it up on urbandictionary and the result is "Perpetually Horny Unusually Naughty". well that should come in handy:) "in any definition, however, it should be noted that phun is a word used to denote a positive quality, or qualities, found within-or without-a person." or perhaps you just meant "fun" and your grammar is "phunny" (kidding alright, don't get worked up, but this word was new to me...).
I think what can be done, is simply to make simpler games. Do *gamers* get more intelligent every 5 years? no. so why the need for ever more complex games to entertain them. Has anyone addressed this? (i've been out of the loop for a while). If you have a good idea surely it shouldn't cost significantly more to make now than 10 years ago, i.e. to make a better looking version of what you could have done at any time, on a new system with an equal amount of work, by using better tools and higher level languages. the problem with this currently is marketing, but lower prices and good word of mouth could work wonders. I think. look at Serious Sam. In this aspect I agree the end user is often his own worst enemy. I hope the article is wrong because it's very depressing. perhaps we're heading for another video game crash. I like your analogy between blockbusters and art-house, i'm a big art movie fan, but atm I see no distribution (or funding!?) channel for art-house games (giving them away over the 'net doesn't count as business of course). It's just shelf space at Wal-Mart (etc) or nothing. Maybe this is the great thing the future will bring, a profitable art-house game scene:) Or maybe it's 2AM and i need sleep..
(er no it's sad that you're not using the tech. as well as you could). the lame documentation is out of date, contradictory and generally unreliable (unlike the LAME software itself). suggest you do some reading at hydrogenaudio.org.
1) however much space you have, you run out. you could get almost 50% more music using standard vs 320 with no audible difference.
2) the point of compressing your music is to compress it. 320kbps MP3 is inefficient.
do what you like, this is ridiculous. there's nothing magic about 320kbps mp3 that gaurantees quality you know. it's likely to have the same flaws as a lower bitrate.
(oh no he's replied again!) why don't you try -aps (or even -ape if you're worried) and if you can't hear a different you've saved a nice chunk of space... then you can use that to put some of your favourite albums (or anything you might want to transcode) in lossless.. only an idea:) it's a shame there's really nothing good in the compression world (that I know of) between about 300 and the huge jump up to lossless..
yeah that was a guess based on the datarate of a CD, lossless is horribly large if you're used to lossy, it's not normally even given in kbps is it. Anyway I doubt apple's new format is much better, lossless compressors seem to have hit a wall:/ thanks for the info though, i don't personally use lossless much yet.
i was just checking that binaries are available for the Mac, they are so I think you're saying Lame -aps is lower quality than 320 CBR - my point is that it's not generally, 320 CBR MP3 is just a waste of bits. if you want high bitrate lossy you're better considering AAC or MPC (don't know about Mac support with that) or going up to lossy, IMHO where of course quality is no longer an issue but speed, compression, error recovery, support etc. are. lastly, i was saying I wouldn't consider any new music format until it's had a chance to be evaluated by the experts. sorry it wasn't an attempt to flame OK..
> Hm, and I was about to re-rip all my CDs at 320 kbps MP3
Hmm well that was silly, either use LAME preset standard and save the space (around 200kbps) or go for lossless (around 700kbps -?) with e.g. FLAC or Monkey's which have been available for a long time and are well supported. I wouldn't use any new un-tried un-tested audio format for my music.
Not sure if this is off-topic, but since you stuck that comment on the end there's my 2p.
it sounds like the judge was *against* mod-chips, but was forced to go against his judgement by the loophole. and loopholes tend to get closed.. so this is a very temporary victory for mod-chips, if that. it's more likely to speed up a change in the law making them *illegal* in Spain. IANAL.
I mentioned IrfanView! haha. give me the karma;) btw does it bug anyone else that in a multi-user XP environment they have to modify the install (e.g. I do INI_Folder=%USERPROFILE%\Application Data\IrfanView in program files\i_view32.ini) to keep MRUDs seperate? Still i'm grateful to the IV author of course.. wouldn't view porn slideshows with anything less!:D
sure they're both dirty and unpleasant places, but: you need to go to a Porta-Potty, you don't need to go to Chernobyl. (I think they think) THAT's what makes this figure amazing:p
i reinstall when the primary hard drive dies, no sooner no later. you're lucky your drive has lasted 4 years*. I could figure out how to use Ghost, but that would be too clever (and probably not worth it for me).
*time to backup maybe, methinks you due for a failure;)
thanks! i'll take a look at Privoxy. i'm still finding Proxomitron pretty good (with JD's config set - you use this too?) but I figure it's time to look for something else. always a shame when a great free project dies.

thanks, that's useful info, and sounds like a fairly sensible law aswell. (OT: why is your karma so bad? you don't seem to deserve 0).
lol. that's funny. just visualise it. see? good. why haven't the mods noticed it.

your 4 digit /. ID doesn't scare me btw. but i'm thinking by now you're not really a music fan anyway.
