I think in your whole mini-rant you managed to get one fact right : seek time being important for apps.
The rest was garbage:-)
Have a think about this... why do clued up sys admins use SCSI/FC disks for server applications when you can buy bigger/faster/cheaper IDE disks instead ? (ignoring seektimes and command queuing etc)
It's really a simple answer you know... reliability. A server class disk is designed to run for years on end and be thrashed constantly, hence they are built to be more reliable than their desktop cousins. The interface used to connect them to the host is also more reliable, has more error checking and correction, is usually even made of better materials.. in all you get what you pay for!
IDE/ATA/S-ATA is great for desktop use and for nearline storage devices (low activity archives)... for on-line storage of sev-1 applications it's not so great.
Just a few tidbits of knowledge I've picked up in 10 years of data storage management:-)
IDE ?
I take it you don't work in the data storage field otherwise you wouldn't suggest putting live filesystems for critical data on consumer grade devices.
The reason data centres use SCSI and FC is not because they are faster...
And why should a company even care ? It seems he's a no-one, a busy body who spends his time interferring in the affairs of others, worse yet he's a Trekkie!!!! http://gnumonks.org/users/laforge/
Though what he is doing is on the right track, he is trying to highlight the misuse of open source software by companies, but if GPL-Violations.org is to get any credibility they need some tougher sounding backers : Lawyer types, other big companies who DO play the game right... and they need to drop the "I wish I was Lt LaForge" stuff;-)
Hmmm, you sound quite bitter... however I still say Branson is a nice guy, the main reason that clinches it is when he gave my cousin and her husband first class tickets to fly to China and collect their adopted baby, they never asked him for the tickets, he just heard about them somehow and gave them a call... a cheap thing for him in terms of money, but returns huge kama points.
Ahh Branson's my hero... one of the few mega rich types where you see him spending money on and doing things we all wish to do but can't afford all the while enjoying himself... rather than most of the other mega rich types who you see do sod all with their money and then die.
Yup! It's a perfectly fine thing to do as well.
They've used their brains and instead of reinventing the wheel they've used existing technology (Linux) as their base, technology that has been released to the world with a license that allows and encourages them to do just that.
What does the Linux get out of it ? More publicity, more developers and potentially the odd tweak and bug fix here and there.
Loads of companies do it, some come out and say they do it, others do it and keep it discreet.
Damn... didn't think of that!
Hold on though... how do you know they are blue-scaled lizard midgets if they are invisible ? And how do they know what they look like ? and how do they pick things up if they are invisible surely it must be bloody hard trying to pick up something you can see with something you can't ? And why does no-one else notice when someone else dissappears ? Could there plan be foiled if we all formed into a giant line and watched each others back ?;-)
But then it's been proven that the world is round... just keep walking in a straight line (making sure to learn how to walk on water and up vertical surfaces) and you can see for yourself.
Alternativly jump up really really high and look down.

You got that balloon to work ? I was 10 and that was the first computer program I ever typed in, took me ages and then I just got a mangled shape bouncing around... though when I was 25 I revisited it and fixed it;-)
I love the line "it shouldn't be that difficult to port future XBox games to the Power Mac G5"... some people have no concept at all in what is involved in moving an application from one system to another, just because the CPU is the same doesn't mean it'll magically convert itself:-)
so what about the all important video output ? The last time I looked at installing Linux on my O2 there was only console output and even that was broken...
You're missing the point... wouldn't you be pissed off if you'd spentmonths/years developing a product and on the eve of it being released you find it floating around Kazaar because some toe rag had pinched a copy out of the CD duplicator while your back was turned ?
Piracy is a sucky thing, people don't realise that actual real people, who are passionate about what they do are the ones in the background slaving away to make us these toys to play with! Nearly everyone on here says "Oh it's only a Microsoft product!" "They've got shed loads of money and it's ok for us to steal from them"... so what about the teams of people who made Halo 2 ? You think those guys are happy that the game they've put their souls into has been ripped off and posted to the internet before they've even had time for their launch party ?
Thank about it...
I used to own a Smart, I'm 5'11" and had about 8" of room above my head. Passanger and driver have heaps of room, it's only when you look over your shoulder to find the rear window that you relalise how small the car is:-)
Not sure thats a good thing really, do we really need PS2, serial, parallel and VGA ports on the back ?
Would have been neater to just go fully USB, Firewire and have DVI, ah well.

That depends ... if your city happens to be somewhere where it's not banned (ie. not in the US) then things will be good :-)

Ha feeble!... try GIS :-)
That would be SDL then wouldn't ?
The ATI adapter won't work .. 9200 chipset is not supported.
Didn't think it would be that easy did you ? :-(
Does the Mini have enough CPU grunt to do HD playback ?

Well at least the Maserati would then become more reliable ;-)
Thats a damn expensive night light!
