  1. Good idea in my mind! on Startup to Offer Open Source Insurance · · Score: 1

I personally don't trust software that's probably written by some spotty 14 year old going by some odd name like "L3kk3r" ... open source seems to be mostly written using the "Bodgitt & Skarper" methodologies, at least if it comes from a company they are more likely to produce a design (remember those funny things from university ? You do them BEFORE you code! :-) and are less likely/able to run a mile when things go wrong.

I've no liking of the guy, but even if he is the most misguided person on the planet he still deserves a fair trial, otherwise we might as well start advertising for the next bunch of "freedom fighters" to step up and start blowing things up all chanting "Free Sadam" etc

  8. NZ is calling him a freeloader and bad planner on Australian Pilot Stranded In Antarctica · · Score: 2, Interesting

This has been on the news for the past couple of days down here, news say that he didn't do much forward planning or contact any of the organisations in antarctica before hand to let them know what he was going to do ... it's probably this that annoys them most, having to rescue him because they didn't have a chance to advise him beforehand.

Got to admire his sense of adventure though :-)

  9. Power without control is useless ... on Galileo System To Include Jamming Capability · · Score: 1

    ... as someone said once.

Although no-one can argue against the fact that the US has a huge war machine, lots of people can argue the fact that the US military (as a whole) is not that well trained.

Having lived on a couple of NATO bases over the years and seen the way various nationalities interact (both in social and military gatherings) the US has always been the butt of many a joke, jibe and fear (from "friendly fire")

A good example was during the first Gulf conflict, the US army arriving by landing craft onto a beach and "occupying" said beach ... all the while being closely filmed by the BBC, CNN and other world news casters, who'd been there for the past 2 days waiting for them ... the other fun thing to watch was the Coca Cola machines being unloaded :-)

Of note the training the pilots gets seems lower than what other countries give (ie. get permission to blast something rather than blast it and then find out it was actually a bunch of italians or canadians or some other poor bugger allied to the US)

I think the US (and it's people) needs to realise that a) the rest of the world exists outside of TV and b) the rest of the world has been fighting wars for a lot longer than the USA has been in existance ... and hence know a lot of dirty tricks, you think that in the hypothetical situation of the US vs EU that the EU members would fight fair ?

Ah well, maybe a big wall could be built around the US, they'd be quite happy in there by themselves and the rest of the world could breath easier :-)

So why then should Valve employ a bunch of horribly expensive developers to make a Linux port with no visible returns in sight ? Face it Linux people, Linux is very good at some things (server stuff, though I'm not keen on it being in important/sensitive datacenters) but impracticale for others. SGI have to do is get a good entry level system back into their range of workstations and price it to attract. Linux is OK but it always lives in BETA or ALPHA versions of everything, people start projects then give up when it gets to the boring bits like documentation or bug fixing, this is where "proper" commercial software wins, it's supported by people whose only job is to support that bit of software and things are documented so that if the lead programmer gets run over by a bus the project can continue.
