I call bullshit on the DVD prices. Depends on if it's a new release obviously, but $5-$6 DVDs of some actual GOOD movies (in addition to some pap and average ones) are easily found here in Canada. That's Canadian dollar prices too. You can also make the argument that some of these movies have extra features like commentary tracks, bloopers making of etc.
Also, consider DVD TV sets. You can get any full season of Buffy, Angel or Firefly (free advertising for Joss Whedon) for $20, good for about 15-20 hours BEFORE the extras. Maybe it's the competition here in Toronto, but DVD prices are pretty damn low. Also, consider that a lot of games stretch the play time with play that isn't actually fun or entertaining, such as meaningless fetch quests.
Yeah, but console games sometimes suffer from what I like to call, "console vision." The game worlds are limited and confining, possibly due to shoehorning PC genres into a console control scheme.
The ultimate example of this imo is Deus Ex. The first one was an absolute classic, with tons of options and actions, allowing for some truly interesting emergent playstyles. The second one reduced ALL ammo to one generic pool of ammo points, character mods switchable at any time and a much less flexible gear and inventory system to suit console gamers. Oh yeah, and tiny, tiny zones to fit the limited ram of the Xbox. The result was the gutting of what could have been a fantastic gaming franchise.
If they are spending millions to throttle, could the case be made to their shareholders that if they had put that money into upgrading their networks instead, that they'd have assets worth millions and be more futureproof as opposed to the current, many millions spent on a lost and increasingly contentious cause?
According to wikipedia, Mario appeared in 53 games before Super Mario 64. So, 64 really isn't that far off. There might be some other brief Mario cameos in other games, or games that were killed in development that had Mario as well.
Guys, the real reason for this is obvious... The guys watching the cameras want audio as well when they are watching people make out/have sex in public. The loudspeakers are just there for them to give instructions as well. "Hey, can you move that leg left, please? I can't see anything from this angle." It'll also sell better on the internet this way.
Actually, I think this should be modded insightful. The chance of getting CJD from Mad Cow beef are infinitesimal. The chance that if you're eating burgers from McDonald's or Burger King that you also eat an unhealthy diet and live an unhealthy lifestyle? Much, much, much higher.
"But if I'm tromping through Midgard and see a Radio Shack add, I'm going to be annoyed."
The simple decision made by publishing companies will then be to not make any more games where they can't place ads. No "Midgard" means no complaints about the ads not fitting in.
"The 2004 game X-Men Legends sold 1.2 million with last year's X-Men Legends II probably hitting around 750K. A third game this year is estimated to manage only 550K."
Here's one (of many) simple reason why this happens. In 2004, X-men Legends was new, the first time (to my knowledge) the X-men had an RPG. People bought it, and as the year went on, the price dropped on it as new releases came out. Then the next X-men Legends was announced and the price dropped even further. Now, you could get X-men Legends 1 for bargain bin pricing, and MOST people wouldn't even know an X-men Legends 2 was coming. So they buy X-men Legends 1, have some fun with it, and a few short months later, X-men Legends 2 is out.
Having just finished Legends 1 which they bought for under $20, do they really need/want to spend $40-50 to play something similar? Why the hell do they feel we need an X-Men Legends every year? Yeah there's a constantly changing roster, but it still ain't sports.
I don't give a crap about online, I'm just hoping that Tetris DS will have the option to have that insanely catchy original GB Tetris music. Hum it now, you know you know it.
Ummm... what? Can anyone name an FPS that was as big in Japan as it was in the US or Europe? You really think Goldeneye or Halo did anywhere near the numbers they did here over there? They needed DoA 4 not Halo 3.
Total BS. Does anyone honestly think that the pressure to sell accessories with the 360s as bundles came at the salesperson level or just store management level? They went in knowing this was gonna be a high demand item, and that they would have increased leverage. They also probably knew that there was going to be a supply shortage of new 360s in the near future and didn't want to hold onto stocks of accessories, games and other stuff and let shoppers potentially get their extras elsewhere.
Besides which, what does this cost Best Buy? Issue an apology probably written by his assistant/secretary/lawyer and then agree to give refunds for those people who actually manage to hear about this and bother to take the time to go through the process. I really only accept a corporate "apology" if it means they take a financial hit worse than what they gained through the improper behaviour in the first place.
Yes, it is fashionable on Slashdot to only read the frequently inaccurate article summary or even just the damned title, but READ THE FUCKING ARTICLE ONCE IN A WHILE!
Honestly, why take the time to fucking post if you can't be bothered to spend the 1-2 minutes it should take you to at click the link and at least skim over the article? The very title of the article would tell you that it is INDIA that is doing this to try to prevent traditional knowledge from being patented in the US. And don't say anything about slashdotting, because the article is on BBC which has more than enough bandwidth to handle repeated slashdottings.
Why the hell shouldn't they be fearless, when they are now regenerating too? Goddammit, we have to stop this madness before we are overrun by marauding fearless regenerating mice. The irony is that we need many, many more fearful, even irrationally fearful peopl to avert this impending horror. Scream with me people! "The Mice are coming! The Mice are coming!"
As has been noted by many others before on the MPAA and RIAA, they don't necessarily want just money (although of course, they want that too), they want CONTROL. By controlling distribution channels, they guarantee profitability in perpetuity. So, the real way to hurt them is to use their attempts at control as fuel for the very revolution they are trying to quash.
Spend more money on "independent" filmmakers and musicians. Listen to more live music. Tell people why they should do the same (they've given us tons of ammo). Spread the music and films via P2P when the creators allow it. If you are a musician or filmmaker, see if you can do it without the studio and use the net to find your audience.
Thinking about profits and money is short term thinking, which many Slashdotters accuse the MPAA and RIAA of. I don't think they are actually that stupid.
If they are going to give awards for games that aren't finished yet, then clearly Duke Nukem Forever should win all the awards every year in perpetuity.
There's always the now-concluded and consistently excellent The Shield, based off of the real-life Rampart Division of the LAPD.
Evil doesn't require intent.

Actually, most of us know it in two languages. They just told you that to make you feel better, which was very kind of them.

Because they don't own and fully control the web radio stations?
Have you considered that Nintendo will also need units for Japan? Which, let's be honest, the 360 didn't?

CJD is the disease that is supposedly caused by eating the mad cow beef. That's what people are afraid of.

I agree, isn't the whole point of higher resolution movies to allow people to count the freckles of celebrities they are obsessed with?
It's as if millions of voices were ready to cry out in pleasure and were suddenly silenced...

Just a minor correction: Porn is allowed at 18, but smoking and drinking are set at 19 in Ontario.
No, they plan to start failing again in 2007. It'll be another 4 years (and millions of dollars) or so before they admit to having failed again.
