I worked in an IT department for a major telco around 2006 and picked up a few things. For starters, and I haven't seen this mentioned yet, the telco I worked for as well as all the others in the industry are all unionized. That means the unions don't want anything too radical to happen to competition or whatever else that could affect their pensions/retirements/existing contracts. So the major corporation makes donations to one party whilst the unions make donations to the other. I don't think either party is really going to mess with the status quo.

In support of this was a TV/radio spot that was running around 2008 I believe in my area (Northern California). There was some kind of reform bill coming up that would have done something to further open broadband to competition. So this ad was running that absolutely no sense obviously aimed at union members of the various companies (all I remember of the ad was a lady mentioning the bill and saying something like "it's supposed bring...*choice* to Californians" ...then the rest of it was very much against the bill but less than specific as to why said "choice" is bad).

Anyway my thesis remains the unions of the comcasts/verizons/(insert large telco here) of the world have as much to do with this as anything else I think.

It does take some patience to set it all up (lets just say OBMM is your friend). So many dependencies and compatibility issues to keep track of it's like "RPM Hell" from linux (back when that was an issue). And Wrye Bash? Don't get me started...

  20. Re:RAID is no substitute for backups on RAID Trust Issues — Windows Or a Cheap Controller? · · Score: 1

The Windows-based solution, since you asked (possibly rhetorically), is a Windows Home Server. I haven't studied how normal Server 2003 functionality work yet so I don't know the terminology but it what I can only describe as a software-based "RAID" for lack of a better term. Although you can use as many or as few drives as you like of any capacity. Through the special interface (intended to be accessed only from clients via web browser) shares can be set up along with a "folder duplication" flag which will make the data available on more than one physical drive. All drives/available space you designate is put into one big storage pool as one drive letter (D: in my case). Any physical drive can be removed through the interface at any time: the software will copy everything to the other drives if there's space. You then can add a different drive and have it merged into the storage pool.

For backups some client software is installed, with the normal time increments available. When a restore is necessary there is a bootable CD available which will connect to the server and restore the whichever backup you point it to. It's very, very slick. It'd be incredibly smooth for a several releases old product never mind a first release product. It's not perfect of course. It's almost all plug-it-in-and-go but there can be hiccups (like the rescue disk not recognizing your NIC for instance. Doh.) And for the record the HP units you can buy adds Mac client support.
