I noticed that too - I've heard the HV transformers in things for as long as I can remember. I can always tell if a tv is in standby (some of the monitors I have used seem to shut almost everything off in standby). My problem now is my current monitor (ancient 21" SGI) makes a ton of noise when it starts up. It can take as long as a minute for the high pitches to damp down.

And I see colors separate along the edges of lamps and fluuroescents. It's very weird - I think it may have somethign to do with my glasses though.

Kind of like the MPAA's strategy of rereleasing old stuff on new media, then claiming pirates are the cause of decreased revenue, rather than the more logical idea that they've used up a lot of the big name back catalog stuff and so people DON'T WANT as many cds as the RIAA thinks should be selling.

The first two "seasons" are out on DVD already. They were released last week or the week before. I described these cartoons to my Fiancee as "the way Star Wars should be." They are great!

what about having just those buttons and a touch sensitive LCD that can display any sort of button you want? Set it up so the this screen is usually locked, but when unlocked the buttons can magically appear and dissapear. You would need a power button, an answer button, and if push the power and answer at the same time the LCD unlocks and you can access all your other buttons. You could make the phone practically any shape at that point (especially if it only used a bluetooth headset or something - then it could be a small little box or something). You could also add Functionality (including iPod) as long as you could reprogram the interface and add memory.

Personally I would still want one that looked like the last picture - a smooth black rectangle. The thing looks awesome!

This was actually one of the more interesting parts for me - Card's dissection and portrayal of the child's mind. To me, especially when I was twelve and thirteen, his portrayal of children made much more sense to me than some other portrayals of young adults I have read. Waht's funny is that somewhere, Card mentions that he gets letters from adults saying "children don't act like this, they don't think like this" and he gets letter from children and teenagers saying "yes, this is exactly how we think."

when did Wikipedia become the undisputed source of all knowledge? That definition right there seems pretty broad and doesn't really allow one one to describe someone who is opposed to homsexuality but does not hate homosexuals (which is what Card seems to be conveying in his essay). Of course, if your personal political agenda includes homosexuality, it would be in your best interest to make everyone opposed to it seem to be hateful and dangerous.

So for the managers out there, before firing someone ask them if the new person you hire will be worth that 3 months of salary - you won't get an extra productivity boost from the new guy. It will cost you 3 months salary of the current guy.

I think you mean Bittorrent (not P2P). In at least some of the sharing programs you CAN disable sharing completely. With Bittorrent you have to work pretty hard at using 3rd party software or a firewall setting to throttle your upload speed to the point where you can't share packets. Supposedly the original bittorrent client will throttle your download back to make it similar to upload (keeps people from leaching) but in practice, with asynchronous connections, this does not seem to happen much.
P2P does not mean you HAVE to upload, it just works a lot better when everyone does.
