wow! Now the US government has even more reason to hate the French. Well, the media here in the US (but on this issue they tend to control things here in the US)
I have a cell phone, and I plug it in every night. If you can ever bring yourself to create a habit of charging the device nightly (which isn't a big problem with Li-Ion as compared to NiCad) you will soon find yourself rarely forgetting to plug it in/drop it in the charger.
Maybe you do have a cell phone, but don't talk on it much (standby battery usage can be very very long) but once you start using that sucker a lot during the day, you'll find yourself plugging it in nightly.
I've heard similar things. Once someone goes there and proves that it is possible, then there will be a rush to get there. Until then, who knows?
I wonder if it would be cheaper to send the energy in microwave form from the moon to one of several orbitting sattelites (so as to not lose the power as the moon rotates) and then beam it to fixed locations on the Earth. I have never seen it done on the earth but for awhile it was a very popular Science Fiction topic.
The reason I mention it is because you KNOW that someone will hear the word nuclear and freak out - even though the Helium 3 won't do much by itself besides evapoarate. What kind of waste do Tokamaks generate? I didn't think it was much.
What if different parts were manufactured in different locations that could be used for a variety of devices which were then easily assembled by the purchaser in their own state?
The main problem is that it has been turned into a human rights kind of issue. In the case of illegal immigration no one has the guts to stand up and say "get them out and keep them out" because it gets turned into a racism issue. Getting re-elected after alienating a bunch of your supporters (who now thinky ou hate mexicans) is pretty tough. Meanwhile the Federal Government tries to convince California it has to foot the bill for the immigrants when the it is a Federal department who has the job of keeping the illegal immigrants out. Sort of "oops, we screwed up. You better take care of this" response.
tap into a cellphone? It's a non-encrypted public wireless transmission. Is it illegal to listen to someone else's ham radio transmission? I am not a lawyer......but I am not sure it is "technically" illegal to listen to cell phone conversations.
That's more along the lines of what I meant by "cheaper." It would be cheaper to install cable runs now (before the drywall goes up) than it would be to rip your walls out later to re-install things later. if you just want to string some ethernet behind the walls before you put the drywall in then you are right, it would not be cheaper. But, if at any point in time your cables go dead and you need to replace things or you want to upgrade to fiber, then having pipes with easy wire runs will be a wonderful happy-making thing.
imagine a beowulf cluster of these.....oh wait it is already a grid.
hmmm.
Actually this could be really cool. I wonder how many companies will want to use it though. I think the security concerns (handing Sun your information, the possibility of someone else recovering the information at a later date and so on) may scare some companies off.
a cheaper solution would be to install cable runs. Maybe a 1 or 2 inch diameter pipe that runs to the different places in your house. Put a pull string in for each place you want to go and you have now almost entire "future proofed" your setup. You can pull whatever is new and great with little or no destruction to the walls or anything.
that may be more credit card related than anything else. When the Credit Card fraud got too high at a local shell they had to disable the credit card readers until they could implement readers that asked for a zip code. I was working there for a few days at the time and there were a LOT of pissed off people "Why do I have to come in anc check ID?!?!?!" If the credit card fraud gets too bad the credit card company will refuse to pay for it anymore and then you are screwed.
Easy! With some good voice replication.impersonation technology.
Tim: "well bob we were looking at a Dell computer today online"
Pseudo Bob:"search www.dell.com for the best deals on computer hardware!"
Tim: "Yeah I know Bob, I was there today"
Bob: "That wasn't me."
Tim: "weird."
Pseudobob: "Order Weird Science: Season one from Amazon.com today!"
Bob: "what the hell is that?"
Google terminates phone call.
the thing is, there will still be people that work because they like it. LET THEM WORK! Automate as much as possible. Check out the book "For Us, the Living" by Robert Heinlein. Lots of weird stuff in there, and lots of rants on his own personal theories. One of the interesting ideas he had for the future was an economic system based on a pseudo dole system. Everyone received a little more than they needed to survive on a monthly basis, and if they chose to they could work and generate more income for themselves. This system was intended to do away with the perceived Production - Consumption surplus. It is actually an interesting idea. I'm not sure if it coudl really work, but I certainly haven't seen studies that prove it wouldn't work.
One of the problems with any claim like this is that almost no one will fund or publish studies like this. It's pretty tough to find someone willing to stand up and say "look, our research indicated that these differences are there." Unless you are publishing results that reinforce the "everyone is the same" stereotype, you are going to have a very difficult time.
That's always my favorite part of these things. They claim 5 decades, or maybe even 2 centuries of data will let them predict how climate patterns that last millenia can be predicted.
Why should the person holding up the bank with a fake gun be punished the same as a person holding up a bank with a real gun? As long as the law does not punish the cops who shoot the bank robber I don't see what the problem is. The criminal knew the risk of carrying a pseudo gun into the crime scene, but he was not placing the people in the bank in danger from him in the same way a criminal with a real gun would be. As long as the police are legally allowed to deal with the criminal in the same way, what's the problem? (other than the possibility of the bystanders being harmed)
What sort of warranty did they offer? Did they replace it right away? How helpful were they? Those would be my questions especially considering the fact that this may be an insolated incident. On the other hand, this may be quite frequent. If so, then the quality of their service would be meaningless.
quote of the day at the bottom of this page
"Kites rise highest against the wind -- not with it. -- Winston Churchill"
hmmm, it seems appropriate

heh heh. The King wanted bigger jugs.
There's a double meaning in that.
is this a book plot? can I steal it from you if it is not? It sounds like a fun read whether it is Hard SF or Humorous SF

it looks like the Thumb has become a ring on his finger. I don't think it was ever stated in the books that it was not a ring. I may be wrong though,

wouldn't that be two wires??

How else should I keep my dorm room warm?

are you sure the words aren't "glod glod glod?" (and yes the mispelling is another allusion to a discworld book for those not "in the know")
you let these same troglodytes vote in elections too. If they are really that dumb, how come their vote counts just as much as yours in an election?
if this is the same crappy movie that was made just to hold onto the rights, then the film is even WORSE than the trailer.
