    In any case he did not distract everyone, just himself and Monica. It shows his devotion to duty that she performed the deed in the Oval Office so that he could get back on the job with no delay at all if the balloon went up.

    xubuntu will run nicely on any computer designed for Windows ME. Debian with or without xfce is not really very suitable for a newbie.

    Try an installer from any of the major distros. They're ALL easier than Windows.

    That is probably right but it is even easier to have have your new hardware arrive with the software pre-installed. Linux will always be in a distant second place until it is pre-installed.

    The bright side is that Linux does not need a reinstaller :)

    Windows simply has a bigger market share, which makes critical flaws a far bigger threat. It is just easier to gather up a botnet of 50000 Windows machines before somebody notices than to get that many *nix machines.

    Homeland Security is clearly not at all concerned about botnets. There are tens of millions of upatched bootleg copies of XP all around the world (including the USA) which Microsoft Genuine Advantage prevents from being upgraded. This adversely affects all computer users whereever they are, whatever OS they use and regardless of the legal status of their software. Allowing security upgrades would be a good step towards solving the problem.

    The police routinely film the public going about their business and are granted exemption from any laws prohibiting secret filming/recording. Then when they get an interesting film clip they sell it to a TV company for broadcasting.

    A citizen who films and records visitors to his house and has a notice to that effect faces official harrassment and criminal charges.

    2000 years ago the Romans were asking "quis custodiet custodiens" ("Who will guard the guardians"?). It seems that we have not found the answer.

    If you think that Spotlight on OS X is useful for opening applications you obviously have not seen Quicksilver which sounds very similar to Katapult. It is so simple and convenient that I have stopped using the launcher.

    absolutely ridiculous. maybe they should start digging through our trash to make sure we've properly shredded our monthly bank statements too.


    Of course they will, that is how the world is run today from The White House to the Class Monitor at school. The busybodies get themselves into positions of power and influence and need to prove their efficacy by taking action - any action will do. The rules committee of the condo meet once a month and need to create a new rule to justify their existance. Then they need enforcement officers and penalties and supervisors and budgets and accomodation. The more they get the more important they are, the more influence they have.

    I bet everyone here recognises the scenario in their country or town hall, the police, the school, the golf club ... and don't forget /. Remember when Bart Simpson beccame hall monitor at school?

    That's seems about on a par with worrying about doing business with Cantor Fitzgerald because they had an office located in the World Trade Center.

    What a strange comment; Cantor Fitzgerald's remarkable recovery after 9/11 would make them the first choice of business partner for anyone worried about about stability after a catastrophe. It is an outstanding example of what effective planning can achieve

    Maybe New Orleans is a nice safe place. Of course the San Andreas fault is never going to crack so California is fine. But I like the weather in Florida so that could be a good choice.

    So a question: Where in the world is politically stable, economically stable, is free (so far) of catastrophic natural disasters and as a bonus has a decent climate?

    The gambling sites are offshore already, this proposal is an attempt to stop Americans using them by blocking transfers of money to and from them.

    You are right that there is too much money at stake to stop it. This is yet another example of the Canute effect where people believe that merely making a new law or regulation necessarily achieves the desired effect. Have the legislators forgotten prohibition?

    If Skype was open source would they have had the leverage to enable free calls within North America until the end of this year?

    I do not see that open/closed source has anything at all to do with enabling free phone calls. I have no idea how that was negotiated or what regulations were applied but I very much doubt that they started with "Hey guys we are not open source, will you give us free phone calls"

    As for leverage Jajah offer free calls and look to be a startup with very little clout.
