It is not just the UK, much of Europe does the same but not always consistently. In the field of economics the US definition has become pretty standard. This has lead to much confusion and you really have to double check exactly what people mean when they talk about, say, a billion square feet of office accomodation in a certain country or a billion Euro turnover of a company.

Oh what joy to get towed in Boston and only pay $100

Come to London http://www.westminster.gov.uk/transportandstreets/ parking/controlledparkingzones/incorrect.cfm and this is the deal:

Initial fine £100 (US$182) This is discounted by 50% if you pay within 14 days
Not long after being ticketed you are likely to be clamped and the release fee is £65
And then they will tow you for only an additional £165

That adds up to £330 ($500) and somehow there always seems to be an extra charge - and that does not count the damage done to your car. If you are a stranger driving in London be afraid, be very afraid!

  23. Re:Exactly on How to Win on Ebay: Snipe · · Score: 1

You are correct logically but I am not so sure about the real world. A lot of bidders seem to be very competitive and do not like to be losers at anything. They just keep on making "just one more bid" and go well over a true market price if two of these bidders collide. You can avoid these people and keep your powder dry by waiting for the last moment. By the time they realise they have been outbid the auction is closed.

Usually I do not bother to snipe but if the item is a lot of money or very important to me I have been known to get up at 3AM and make a bid. It not only seems to pay but also prevents me from making just one more bid.
