  4. no breaktrough - just blending on Close but no Cigar for Netflix Recommender System · · Score: 5, Informative

Most noteworthy aspect of the winning entry is that their winning method works by combining 107 different types of prediction strategies.

They state that you can get pretty far by blending the 3-4 best strategies, but of course doing so would not have netted them the progress prize

It is kind of sad realization that there actually is no better method. Your best bet is to use brute force and attempt to find some weighting methodology that combines known methods. By the way this is a well known issue in protein structure prediction competitions, for many years now so called meta-servers (predictions work by merely combining other predictions) win all the time. The joke is that we now need meta-meta-servers, combine the results of combiners

Also a clarification on the progress prize: to get it you need to have at least 1% improvement over the previous result. Considering that there is only 1.57% to go there is room for only one more progress prize until it hits the Grand Prize (10% improvement over the original results).

By presenting the other side of the argument, (which by the way, according to the Brethren there is no other side of the argument) these people are giving comfort to the enemy. If there are facts which cause doubt about the truth of global warming then those facts must be suppressed. It is for the good of all. Oh, and it's all George Bush's fault I've been told. 11. whose fault is it ? on How Warcraft Really Does Wreck Lives · · Score: 1

What if someone designed a game that made use of sophisticated psyscological tricks to slowly "brain wash" you, to convince you that you must play? Would that be acceptable?

Not saying that Blizzard did this intentionally, they're simply "too good" at what they do. What you call good game design is leveraging the power of small, gradual and ever slower positive reinforcments in such a way to make people play longer. Turns out some people are very susceptible to this, very small percentage but it does indeed affect their lives.

Everyone is responsible for their actions, on the other hand companies also need to be understand the deeper implcations and put proper safety protocols in place.

In all fairness Blizz made some efforts in trying to fix this, there is a time-limit that can be set to kick you out of the game, honor decay (aka running in place) is also removed.

  12. twich combat on Ask the Warhammer Online Team · · Score: 1

What is a typical combat resolution time in your game?

WoW for example is aiming to resolve PvP combat very quickly, most 1v1 PvP encounters end within 20 seconds (often far less, rarely more). This makes for very intense battles on the other hand any inital disadvantage will be hard to overcome. It also leads to button smashing, bunnyhopping etc. Sometimes I feel the combat is a over little too quickly, would be fun to have it go on for longer.

Combat in Guild Wars for example seems to be a lot more tempered (I only played GW for a short period but this is the impression I got) with every class having access to some sort of self healing.
