  1. Re:The Next VRML on John Edwards' Campaign Enters Second Life · · Score: 4, Insightful

    Mr. Edwards gained quite a reputation both in NC and nation wide as an extremely aggressive attorney. Living in NC for most of my life, I got to see many effects of his record setting medical settlements and jury awards on both the patients and doctors. If he can do the same things for Second Life, then it probably won't last much longer... :~}

    iriver took them (ogg group) up on the offer and provided them some prototype players to use for testing and development. I own a T10 1GB flash based MP3/ogg player because they took the time to both seriously reach out to the OS community and then incorporate the efforts. They also listened to their user community and now offer a supported method for switching some of their players between MTP (ms transfer protocol WMP10) and standard usb flash drive modes. No more hoops to jump through for linux based transfers and I can easily switch back to the default DRM'd mode... *cough*

    But, to be more on topic, I'm excited to see an outreach program from the OSS community with what seems to be a very professionally presented plan. If some companies were interested in expanding their market into the Linux/*BSD domain and had no clue about how to proceed, they now have some guidance and a reasonable path to explore.

    Remember that several game developers had their funding cut so Daikatana could see the light of day ( at a burn rate of $1,000,000US per month).

    That is not hunting, it's what punk kids do when shooting arrows at the geese in the park.

    All of the hunters I know ( including myself) eat what we take. I've also shot wild boar that had moved into the woods next to a development where children routinely played. Even that was donated to a poorer family that did indeed eat most of the meat.

Not seeing something to that effect after this mych time would make me quite nervous if I had a business or product that relied on continued development of the ReiserFS line. Seems as if Namesys is accepting the inevitable demise of the whole organization at this point; I hope that changes.

  23. Re:Ultra-capacitors for a different type of hybrid on 500 Miles on a 5-Minute Recharge? · · Score: 1

    Someone's math is a little off. Around here, $9 of juice is 50KW/hr or a 600KW charge rate for the 5 minute span described. With a 7200v feed line (fairly common power line), we are talking around 85A after figuring in some conversion loss. I would figure a longer 10 or 15 minute charge time would make for a more consumer friendly product and could easily be incorporated into existing business models, like McDonalds for instance. Go in with your family for a quick lunch and charge your car at the same time.

  24. Why? on DoD Wary of That "Open" Word · · Score: 4, Insightful

    I gather it is because of the act of taking on the responsibility of making a solution fit the problem. In a commercial or consulting role, someone claims to have a solution ( or be capable of creating one) that will solve the problems at hand. When a manager ( especialy within the DoD) gives the okay for a canned solution, the responsibilites are already diluted, meaning that if the solution has already been working for others, it is safe to assume that it will work for your organization. If it fails to do so, the manager can point to the other successful implementations and list the differences between your actual needs and the products capabilities. The vendor can then tailor the app more closely to your needs and the manager still looks good.

    If we apply the same standards to Opensource, we can look at established projects like Apache, Mysql or even Openoffice and they are still safe because others are successfully using the software, it is not really a matter of a central point for support. For a manager to okay a more obscure project for implementation means taking on a much greater and unknown responsibility.
