Since Blizzard currently provides the battle.net system for free, will Microsoft starting charging for the service as they charge for everything else.
Ever consider thinking before posting? Microsoft has owned www.zone.com for YEARS now and they only charge for 'premium' games, like Asheron's Call. For online retail game matching (ala Battle.net), NO CHARGE! Never has been.
Despite everyone's assumptions, nothing called "Half-Life 2" has ever been announced or talked about by anyone connected with Valve.
What you say is true, but Sierra does have the first refusal rights to publish a Half-Life sequel, per the original publishing contract. And there will, without a doubt, be a Half Life 2, there's just no way the companies involved could resist such a surefire hit. It might not be out this year, but it will be released.
Vivendi owns Sierra, who published Half-Life, and they have the publishing rights for Half-Life 2, but Valve is an independent company. Microsoft will NOT own Valve if they buy Vivendi.
How did this asshat get moderated up? People like him are the reason many businesses would never even consider doing an OSS release at this time. There are way too many people willing to attack every possible gesture as opportunism. Would you be happier if they hadn't released this openly at all? Jesus...
Somebody must really want to get rid of some spare money they had lying around.
This is more or less a PC with Windows and TV out. Which makes it nothing more than the Indrema rehashed, except it uses Windows as the OS instead of Linux.
Using Windows allows them to claim 32k games (they are listing pretty much all retail games that have ever been released for Windows as their 'launch titles')...But it also means this box is going to be EXPENSIVE compared to other consoles because each one will need a licensed copy of Windows and something tells me Microsoft isn't going to bend over backwards to give these guys a sweet bulk licensing deal.
I think the fact that Microsoft spend billions on the XBOX launch and is still trailing pretty far behind the big boys in the console market shows how difficult it is to get a foot in the door here.
These guys are fucked..Just plain fucked.

The Salon review was satire, not a real review. If you don't believe me, just click the link again and look up at the top, where it is clearly labelled "Satire".
The best part is, mashing the X button harder than normal DOES make you go faster on PS2!
There is some truth to this, as all of the buttons on the PS2 controller are pressure sensitive. But it is really easy to press hard enough to get the highest level of button press. It is much harder to press it halfway down than fully down, even for kids and weak old people.
Add complexity to the software and you're going to see unexpected bugs, whether the car/appliance runs WinCE, Linux or no OS at all. Complexity is the problem here, not WinCE.
1) You realize, of course, this won't help you for a long time. This only has an impact on new Windows installs. You'll be dealing with users who have older Windows installs for a long, long time.
2) Use the Sun JavaPlugin and/or WebStart, that's what they exist for.
Yes, Snood is Yet Another Bust-A-Move. Bust-A-Move has been gunning for the most-cloned-game of all time (though it still has quite a ways to go to catch up to Tetris). Bust-A-Move even has commercial game clones (Worms Blast) in addition to all the myriad of shareware/freeware clones.
The whole premise of this article is somewhat offensive, IMO. A link to someone complaining that SNOOD gets no respect when in his 'screed' he doesn't once mention that SNOOD owes everything it has to Bust-A-Move. Give Taito some props. Bust-A-Move has been kicking ass as a simple fun game since the early 90s, and all of the Bubble Bobble/Rainbow Islands games (that some of the Bust-A-Move characters were taken from) were great fun too.
Yeah Prop-Cycle kicks ass, as far as such games go. They've recently begun supporting Prop-Cycle in MAME... With a small bit of code, I'm sure one could make it support these bikes...
with paid services :
name, po box, sometimes address if it's correct.
Well you must have paid for those services with a credit card.. Guess what, now they know EVERYTHING about you for when someone ELSE does a lookup! Good job, asshat!
While the lack of financial knowledge on Slashdot IS amazing, the price of CDs has been trending up with inflation, not staying constant. You'd be hard pressed to find a new CD for less than $17 now at retail, compared to $13 or so a few years ago.
Pass the tinfoil hats!! DogIsMyCroprocessor needs one quick!

You dirty bastard, you beat me to the post. I hope the (-2 Redundant) karma I will wind up with weighs heavy on your conscience!
Just sayin'
Replace "Industrial Light & Magic" with "The Regents of the University of California" and it is just the standard BSD license.

You said it, man. When Quake III comes out I'm gonna PARTY LIKE IT'S 1999!
Gonna mod me down? Fuck you then.

Ron Eldred was really good in Black Hawk Down. Great movie.
Gonna mod me down are you? Well fuck you then!
Thinking of modding me down? Well fuck you.

I guess selling free software doesn't pay what it used to.

Why would you guess the EFF? What has the EFF got to do with price fixing?
The EFF won't see a dime of this money, and rightly so. I'm not anti-EFF, but ... again, they have nothing to do with this.
I guess their stuff isn't the English language, is it?
