Direct TV is slow just on it's own. My parents had direct TV (got it after I went off to college, the bastards!) and the guide was always slow. So my guess is it's not the TIVO software, but the direct TV software. It probably has something to do with the fact that it's through a satellite uplink rather than cable. Perhaps everytime you try to access the guide, it tries to download it, rather than updating the guide periodically? My parents now have digital cable, and the guide functions work a hell of a lot faster now.
What gets front page news, charity work, or a murder? The US is a very benevolent country in a lot of ways, but the rest of the world will ignore that so long as we keep attacking countries (irregardless of how necessary a target we think it is).
"This war is so much in their favor its amazing that we are doing as well as we are. If it was just your typical large scale war where the opposing side just comes in, carpet bombs, invades with infantry and then kills anything remaining, this would be no contest. We could have had this over in a month if it was like that."
I guess that's my point. The tradition strength of the superpower (a powerful army, strong air support, bombs), is not successful against this sort of fighting and the enemy we are facing in Iraq. Fighting this sort of fight requires a lot of manpower, rather than firepower, which we have in a much more limited supply.
I guess the point i was making is that no one is right now, and that the politics of the world are such that acting like the USis a superpower is angering a lot of other countries.
I don't think Kerry is more responsible for going to war. I agree that he is responsible for going to war, and I wish he would stop being so wishy washy about the whole thing and just come out and make a stand on the issue. And I can blame both for being misguiding, because both had a hand in it, although I would say that Bush is more to blame, being the PRESIDENT and all, but I will agree that Kerry was misguiding.
However, the 36 number is misleading. While I'm not positive on the exact number, many of the countries in our coalition were in fact protectorates or in some other way under the protection of the US military forces. The reason it was unilateral is because the US made up the vast majority of combatatants in the war.
The UN is not designed to be a police force in the world, but NATO is. And I'm really getting sick and tired of all the anti-french sentiment.
You sir, have given the most reasoned and intelligent post on the reason for going to war that I have seen. I still don't support all your points (bombing people has a strange way of making them like you less than like you more...) and I'm still against the Iraqi War but I really appreciate you rising the debate above the typical "you're either with us or against us" rhetoric of the republican party and the "bush is a moron" rhetoric of the anti-bush coalition.
I figure I should probably answer your comment about making the middle east less of a hotbed of extremism. In the late 1800's, germany wanted an African Colony. It had finally become a unified country, and was begining to flex it's muscles. But in the process of taking that African Colony, it managed to cause France and England to ally themselves together. Now, we tend to think of france and england as friends now, but back then, they had just been through 500 years of war(give or take). So it was a big deal to get these two countries to put aside their differences and join forces.
The same thing is happening now to the US. We are turning many of our NATO allies against us, and many of our allies from other parts of the world. They are just as important, if not more so in combating the old problem of anti-american extremism. The problem is, the world is not broken into two halves anymore, since the end of the cold war, and the US is not the superpower it once thought it was. I worry that Bush is isolating us from the rest of the world with his tough talk. Tough talk is necessary sometimes, but are we actually able to back it up?
The current situation in Iraq seems to imply that we can't.
I'd just like to point out that Kerry has made it clear that the war in Iraq was the right thing to do, if we had had the support of the world to do it. We did not. I think people don't remember that the US is a member of the world, and no longer a Superpower. We need to work with the rest of the world to solve our problems and theirs, not against the world.
I think a master's degree implies that you are able to take a task assigned to you, and complete it satisfactory. That is of main concern to an employer, not how brilliant you are. Completing a master's degree is a sign that you know how to get things done. Yes, part of getting a degree is gaining a general knowledge of the subject, but the higher education system is not set up to teach people practical skills that are often needed in engineering. That is why they had apprenticies in the old days, that's the way you learn a skill, through doing.
Until we reform higher education to include a greater number of internships and work experience, a master's degree will continue to do a poor job of actually showing a persons ability in the field of their choice.
I think AKAImBatman would agree with me, I guess I just wanted to elborate on some of his points (as a person who just spent $22,000 on a education master's degree for a job that will pay when I'm 50 60,000 dollars a year, if i'm lucky.) Most of what I learned was from actually teaching, and not in my graduate classes.
no, the average news cast does not include close to 1 and a half of violent, disturbing and disgusting images. I support Moore's right to make such a movie and i appreciate the work that he's done, although i didn't really like the film. It's ideology and an attempt to mobilize the left the way taht the right mobilized against clinton. The movie deserved an R rating because the violent images should have only been seen by adults and those children who have parental consent to see the film.
But who's to say these companies won't do the same thing that the current big record companies are doing now? Just because they're smaller, doesn't mean that they'll still be "good" when they become big.
I mean, I love indie rock, but you have to be a realist I think and realize that just because they're indie, or small or whatever, that they are automatically good, and won't pull similar stunts if given the chance.
i'd recommend the green party of the united states, they havea similar stance, so long as ralph nader doesn't get the nomination. I personally feel that he has an agenda seperate from the green party, and that the green party and ralph nader are different enough to make me question whether I'd vote for green party if nader was their nominee.
A democratic process? I really don't see how that could work. Just like in the current election process in america, this election would be controlled by the radio stations with money. How are you going to prevent that? How would you protect small, mom and pop, independent and non-profit stations? The FCC stinks, but don't forget it's the congress( a democratically elected body, i should note) that makes the laws that the FCC enforces.
Hmm... thanks for pointing that out, right now i'm still running XFree 4.3 (using fedora core 1 because I need a custom kernel for multimedia) so I couldn't check, I was just going off a memory of a review i had read somewhere of a distro that included x.org.
but isn't it no longer xfree86.conf by rather xorg.conf or something like that? Just a thought, not sure if the submitter wrote xfree86conf by accident...maybe that's the problem? Also, Mandrake now has rpm's of it (didn't that get posted today, btw?), maybe you should try installing the rpms?
On Windows? ``Where can I find the button to do this?''
That's totally it. That's exactly why I get frustrated with Windows. On linux, I get all excited every time i have to do some config, or get a program to run or whatever, but on windows, something doesn't work, or work how I want it to, i'm like ohhh sh**...where's the button to get this to do what i want it to? There's something about the POSIX standard that I just really like.
But you're right about linux security... unless you vigilantly keep your computer updated (which can often break your install, yes this can happen in linux too...)you're just as open to getting comprimised, although in linux it's usually a script kiddie rather than a worm.
This is a question to all those who use linux because it's faster than Windows. I personally like Linux better myself, but I have to ask people, why do they think that linux is faster than windows. If you're doing command line stuff, yeah, that runs a lot quicker, but I've found for most gui stuff, linux runs noticably slower.
I usually run KDE or GNOME (neither one seems to really have a speed advantage on the other) and sometimes XFCE (which does seem a little bit faster) on Fedora Core 1 and Mandrake 10.0 but running the same program (Open Office.org or Mozilla) it definitely runs slower in Linux. This is noticible both on my Athlon XP 2400 and my 450 Mhz laptop. Just basic things about the GUI seem to run slower (moving windows, etc).
Am I missing something here? Should I be messing more with the configurations? Are people who talk about the speed of linux using blackbox without any eye candy whatsoever? I know this is slightly off-topic, but I'll tell ya, the speed issue makes me more likely to start up Windows instead of Linux, and I'm wondering why people say linux is faster.
our just poor Q and A on the install process... my guess is just a bug in the install process that doesn't allow the install to happen if it runs into a non-english language. it really wouldn't make sense to try and lock out users just based on their language. just My two cents.
I think that a lot of gui and interface problems have to do with patent and copyright infringement. So it would be nice if people used some form of open source in gui design. Too many design decisions are based on not wanting to infringe on other people's intellectual property. At least that's my two cents
you mean those crazy lapp landers right? I don't trust them at all either. They know where santa is, and they ain't telling. Well, hopefully, this way we'll find out one way or another.
I really hope that this works out, because from the looks of it, it would be a great tool in reducing environmental strains. I like that they don't need to rebuild all the factories, reduce, reuse and recycle.
10.0 is the first release I did the ftp install for and I'm really happy about it. I used gentoo for a while, and loved the fact that i could go to the command line, type emerge foobar and in a couple of minutes (or hours) have foobar on my computer. I loved my gentoo box, but found myself playing with it too much to get it to work just right, which is why I went back to Mandrake, because it's pretty amazing how much they are able to make work just by default. Also, their control center is the best one that I've used, better than fedoras, imo.
Anyways, I recommend people using it if they are interested in begining on linux, because it gives the ease of use that a beginner needs, but its pretty powerful under the hood.

Unless they bring back the draft.

Yeah, this new theme is really sucky... but i downloaded the qute theme, and it doesn't look so good in the new browser either.

Wait, can someone explain to me why this is offtopic, i don't necessarily agree with it, but it is definitely on topic. Jeez. moderators!

I guess I was thinking also about interaction as well as just look and feel. Kind of like Apples Ipod Patent.

While this might be true, the poster doesn't offer any proof. Some proof please?
