I just want to know, why does microsoft charge so much for their codecs? I know, it's marked up by turbolinux, but still, but microsoft is probably getting 2/3 (at least) that, which would be about 42 dollars or so. I thought most OEM's paid about that for all of Windows. I guess it's microsoft's technology, to charge whatever they see fit, but i just don't see the economical sense in buying this distribution. This is why i really hope ala carte cable doesn't get passed, all it's going to do is raise the prices on cable. Because when companies break things apart, they invariably charge more for each part than it would cost you for each if you bought it in a package.
I think the only way for the highlander to actually be in the church would be to somehow embed himself in the webpage, or maybe be touching the web server. Hmmm...i'm going to have to think about that one.
i feel like this reference isn't really obscure, or my roommates and i watched way too many seinfeld re-
runs in college. We switched our peephole around in our apartment, and yes, it is as stupid and dumb as seinfeld makes the idea seem. ahhh...college days.
i thought the jungle level in goldeneye was really impressive, especially considering the technology then. It had alot of fog, but i thought that it added to feel of the level and worked rather well. It helped that the m16 had a scope on it...
but i agree with you though, it worked as a level, but wouldn't have worked as an entire game. However, battlefield: vietnam is about as near perfection (not from a graphics perspective, but from a game play perspective, although the graphics are pretty good).
dude, i'm the nerdy one in my group of friends (those from high school) and i was the last one to join friendster, and it was only because they were all on it. It's like IMing, it used to be a nerdy thing, now is just a young-person thing...
and especially how it applied to rss feeds, but that's not all. You could apply it to search results, friendster-type profiles, etc. Maybe that's what google has planned with their personalized search engines...
what sucks about this is if we elect Kerry, the whole iraq affair will likely not get any better. Has he pleged to bring American Troops home? No? So how exactly is the "war" going to end?
sigh...I'll keep yelling, but I'm not sure how much good it'll do.
My friend from high school grew up in kiev, and talked about the summer where there were no kids in Kiev, because of concerns over nuclear fallout. Just really blew me away when she talked about it. Imagine a major american city, where all the kids have been sent away to live with relatives or friends in the country.
while driving in your car in chicago you can tune to either 530 (i think) or 16?? something on the am dial and get regularly updated traffic information that's put out by the department of transportation. Nice, and free.
No see, first they'd have to buy the ip in the colecovision (or similar oldschool console) from a company who may or may not of actually owned the ip and then sue the modern console makers for including things like joysticks on their control pads, which are obvious ip violations, amoung others. Then they'd have to offer liscenses to normal console users for the right to use things like pixels on the screen and their gamepad joystick.
i had the chance to move across country with a group of friends, where in all likelyhood, we would have continued our band, and lived the rock and roll life style, so to speak. Instead I stayed where I was because I had a girlfriend and a decent job. Now I'm currently looking for a new job as my contracts ending and am single. But I don't really have any regrets. Neither choice was the right or wrong choice. Who knows what would have happended if I had moved with them? i'm pretty happy right now, and have enjoyed the past two years, and they ended up moving back here.
You might never have another opportunity like this one come along. But that shouldn't make or break your choice.
The best piece of advice I can give is don't stress about it. My guess is that either choice would be fine. Choose the one that just feels the best, and go with it. Don't worry too much about the future, the future will happen.
xserver is a complete rewrite, x.org implementation is (as people have already said) a fork of xfree86 (4.4rc2 is what they are saying) done right before the liscense change.
I for one would love to hear from some linux vendors on how they sell their products, and some of the problems they've faced. Perhaps slashdot could do an interview with one, or more of them. Here's some links to some linux vendors, so you can contact them directly (and maybe even buy something from them, since that's how they stay in business).:) note: i don't work for any of these companies
Los Alamos Computers These guys seem pretty good, and offer a lot of choice, and have some clearance systems. penguin computing Linux Certified Linux.org's listing of linux hardware vendors. Doesn't seem to be that up to date(last I looked) but a good starting point for finding computers running linux.
man, if only some game developer would read this comment. If they could make a game that included these characteristics, it would be pretty cool. I mean, I like myself a good game of counter-strike, but it would be really neat if the guns were actually balanced according to real life, not nerfed because of in-game play imbalances.
Cool! The Science Fiction Database is updated! What fantastic news! This is WAY more important or interesting than other news, like a 10th planet being found. When is that article going to be posted?
man, sometimes i don't even know why i look at the discussions of programing and scripting languages. I hardly ever know what people are talking about.
i must be hear for all the clever jokes and witty references.
Yes, we are all aware of how much better the mac is at dvd authoring, but for various reasons many of us are tied to x86 win/linux world. Many of us can only afford one computer, and have to work on that to get all our work done. If someone knows of some websites or programs that might be useful for someone using windows or linux.
mark me as -1 troll, but I get tired of this sort of thing on slashdot. He did not ask about what operating system would be best for dvd authoring, he's just looking for some software that'll work with his current OS.
This is pretty interesting, and shows why william gibson is a pretty widely read author; other posters have called him a luddite, while you talk about him romanticising technology. Me, I see a little bit of both in him.
My friend has a toshiba tablet and loves it. He draws a webcomic (www.badasshamster.com) and also is a busy video game developer. He never knows when he'll have down time to work on his comic, so he bought the toshiba so that he could work on it from whereever.
That said, it is not as nice as a wacom tablet, which is what I've used in doing computer based artwork. Although you do get to draw on the screen, which is admittedly pretty cool. Also note, he and I only find them useful because we do art on the computer. If you don't plan on using it for artistic purposes, you might want to try some other setup (ultra thin notebook or desktop replacement notebook and a pda). However, if you really want, or feel you need a tablet pc, I'd recomend the toshiba. It's definitely a well-built tablet.
Something you mentioned about telnet going the way of gopher struck me. I find telnet to be the most useful way to check my e-mail. I've always used pine, and the fact that it works a lot smoother and quicker than webmail is really nice. But the university I'm attached to is slowly fazing out pine in favor of webmail and imap connects, which is really unfortunate, because I probably wouldn't have gotten into linux if I hadn't gotten used to the shell presented by telnet.
so you guys are here too? I figure anyone with some good ideas would probably be out right now celebrating the new year. Unless you're not from the US that is...have a happy new year everybody, i'll get back to my all too exciting job of coding in the new year.

Are you saying that you're sad that laclinux closed down? Because as far as I can tell, they're still open, or are you talking about qli linux?

thanks for sharing.
hypersonic pc has been selling one for a while as well. They seem to be pretty decent machines, might by one with my tax refund. -siniset

I haven't seen the movie, but I think that Sony screwed up with this one.
