well traffic lights seem to be a completely different situation.
where i live, we have cameras at most of the busy intersections.
you run a red light and later that month you get a pretty high-rez picture of your car (good enough to see your grumpy face) and a hefty fine
I cant see any sort of legal way of enforcing that people get paid for music. there is no equivilent of police patrols for red lights that will stop someone paying zero dollars for music.
unless you accept DRM... which wont happen. we accept cops on the streets (sometimes barely - our cops have a habit of using speeding tickets etc for revenue raising)
but i cant see anyone accepting DRM unless it is completly covert. for instance... my new DVD-rom will only allow you to change regions 4 times before becoming locked... it was not advertised on the box so i am left with a crippled peice of equipment. honestly i will be looking at a way of circumventing that just for the principal... not because i actually have dvds from 5 different regions...
I remember reading about this somewhere. It may have been New Scientist. It was the Isreali secret service... Mossad or something (if I remember from Tom Clancy novels hehe)
They hacked an exchange to prevent a terrorist / palestinian leaders phone from working. Then when he took it to the dealership they modified it.
Then they gave him a call, confirmed it was him on the phone... and pressed a few buttons... BOOM
Anyone remember the movie Wedlock? Where the prison population had these collars around their necks wired with explosives... and yeah they blew up on some kind of signal (I saw the movie when I was really young)
Combine the ideas and it give you some sort of futeristic totalitarian martial law society where everyones mobile phones are wired with explosives... you break the law and boom... you die:)
I am not trying to make any political statement (with the isreali thing or be flamebait, just trying to be interesting / informative
Methanols ignition temprature is 725 degrees F (455 Celsius) so i doubt you'd get a sudden fire unless you are playing with a lighter and stabbing holes in the casing.
The laptop would stop working way before it got dangerous.
He's right. Most people simply don't care. Why pay for something when you can download if for free with the click of a button?
Beacause its not always free... Unless you are on an unlimited download plan downloading a movie (under excess usage rates) can almost approach the cost of buying the dvd.
I dont know, maybe other countries have decent plans for broadband... but with a 3 gig limit I sure as hell dont.
Hey I wasn't trying to start a debate on Iraq... or liberals or American politics (much). I just found it interesting that blurfus blames 'apathy' (ie the poor votor turnout) for Hugo gaining power in Venezuela and that these so called 'Liberals' blamed apathy for the Republicans winning control of congress in the last US elections.
Sure I may have been trying to imply some sort of irony or something... shhhhh
Another interesting fact (this is mostly for f0dder) is that in Australia the Liberal party is conservative (And more like Republicans). I actually voted for them last elections (voting is compulsary for everyone over the age of 18) but I dont think I will again. Our prime minister seems a little too eager to follow Bush into a war with Iraq without UN support... And he hasn't really convinced Australia as to whether or not we should. It doesn't seem like you guys would care much if we sent over one of our SAS regiments... I think it just makes our prime minister feel better that he is contributing and he can be one of dubyas mates...
I find your theory on faith based foreign policy interesting. Do you think Bush is ignoring Korea (which has declared it is developing nukes) in preference to bombing the f*ck out of Iraqi children (when inspectors have been there for months and not found any solid evidence of an active weapons program) because Iraq is kind of religious compared to communist Korea?
I havn't done any study of American history or its constitution but from my understanding the founding fathers were concerned with personal freedom and liberation for everyone.
I think one of the most basic rights that would be considered if it were to all happen again these days is freedom of information.
I dont think anyone would argue that the world wide web is the most powerful communication tool in existance these days. Radio, Books revolutionised (I speak Australian English) the world in their own ways but nothing compares to the power of this immense mass of linked information.
The only thing which I believe can possibly hold and does hold the potential of the internet back is the way that individuals one way or another have to pay telecommunication companies for access.
I believe that wireless could change everything (i know thats hardly an original point of view) as it removes telecommunications companies and any potential for censorship from the picture.
Getting back to a point, I believe that a country which was truly free would recognise that the internet should be free for all, and if any technology has a potential to make this happen it is wireless.
If the USA constitution was written / ammended to today it wouldn't be hard to imagine a protection for the right of everyone to access the internet for free.
Surely this would protect freedom and the american way far better than the 14th (? - the freedom to bear arms in case i got it wrong) ammendment.
Sorry if this was too long winded but its an idea I wanted to see discussed.
From memory anyway, a couple of years ago Microsoft bought 500 million of stock in Apple as part of the settlement for Windows being an absolute rip-off of Mac OS.
I thought at the time, and I still think now, that if Microsoft has a fairly large amount of money invested in Apple then its future cant be all that dark and gloomy...
actually 10% of US citizens live in trailers...
so much for a majority of the movies telling Americans and the rest of the world they really are wealthy enough to all live in the suburbs...
I just wanted to add my two cents to this flame war between my Australian brethren and the Pro-Gun Americans in this thread.
In Australia we can still own firearms, but they are heavily restricted since a person who was legally mentally ill got hold of several semi-automatic weapons and killed 35 people in a tourist town.
After this occured Semi-Automatic and Automatic firearms were confiscated in a "buy back" scheme.
A few months ago, an Asian man took 7 legally owned handguns to a university and went postal.
Now our government is planning a handgun buyback. I dont agree with these gun-control laws as I think they are a bit excessive. But clearly the mentally ill man should not have been able to buy several high powered semi automatic rifles. And I'm not sure about the recent handgun guy needing 7 handguns.
I agree with a man having a right to own a weapon, but some restrictions are needed (to stop nutcases and criminals having easy access to weapons.) I even wish my government hadn't been so heavy handed with confiscating powerful weapons from its citizens. To our north are a lot of overcrowded countries looking at Australia (with similar landmass to America but only 18 million people). Our army isn't going to manage much, we dont have enough bullets in our country to shoot every man in the Indonesian army even once. But a gorilla army might help while we wait for the US and UK to come bail us out.
Maybe if the NRA went back to its grassroots of premoting responsible and safe gun ownership, and say, it was illegal to own a firearm unless a member of the NRA or some kind of organisation offering courses in safety then the situation in America wouldn't be so out of hand.
Going on about how you'll have to pry my gun out of my cold dead hands like Charlton Heston doesn't really make the NRA and pro-gun owners look like responsible, clear minded people which I am sure a majority are...
And I think that has something to do with the 11,000 or so firearm deaths on American soil each year, when other western countries struggle to break 100
On a sidenote, alter the spamfilter so that it will send the reason why the email was flagged as spam to the sender. If its a important letter i do think the sender will try to send the email again in a altered shape.
It's a good idea, but you could just be helping the spammers by providing them with a way to get past the filter you are using.
I also think some people are being a little harsh on businesses that claim that they are being blacklisted for no reason. Perhaps more accountability is need by the people who decide whats spam and what isn't. I ordered DVDs online and now I recieve an email once a month from them, I have the option of opting-out (and it actually works...not just bring more spam). I reguard these emails as solicited advertising and every so often I make a purchase based on the information they contain. However my university network flags them as potential spam. I really hope they dont take the next step and blacklist them... but I believe if they are responsible that wont happen.
Well it looks like this is the start... Anyone got a guess as to how long it will take from today (where they are planning to put them in shipping cases) till the day my refridgerator can tell whats inside and do my shopping for me?
I found some more info (http://lierozone.vze.com/) for you guys.
The site also has mods for the game:) There might even be a linux version floating around somewhere I think I read about it once just search google.
Liero at it's heart is a deathmatch game whereby you control a worm and
basically take out your opponent before they do the same to you. It's based
on real time gameplay where true skills in movement and firing is essential
to winning. Matches are played on levels that are comprised of dirt, tunnels
and rocks. At first, you'll begin to dig tunnels to move about, but this isn't
the only method of movement as your worm is also armed with a ninja rope.
Liero rocks out:D
real time 2 player "worms" game, my friends and I spent hours and hours playing it at school
and i think the requirements are like....286

if your sad about scientific american... give new scientist a try... it is british, but then again at least it isn't french :P
hey, someone should make a movie about that... they could call it "the guy who travels into parallel universes to kill himself and get ultimate power"
They hacked an exchange to prevent a terrorist / palestinian leaders phone from working. Then when he took it to the dealership they modified it.
Then they gave him a call, confirmed it was him on the phone... and pressed a few buttons... BOOM

His voice annoyed the hell out of me.
I almost broke my friends gamecube because he was playing the spiderman game and it kept repeating the same voice snippets over and over again.
GAAAA
I'll be more likely to watch a sequel if he is replaced by an actor with a less annoying voice.
I dont know, maybe other countries have decent plans for broadband... but with a 3 gig limit I sure as hell dont.
Whoops... did i say that?
I've really got to learn to keep my mouth shut

This article just adds more proof that we need a revolution
I hope NOFX are right and 'Dinosaurs Will Die'
As long as they kept the Nerf Herder doing the theme I'd be happy! Never watched the show much anyway... but Nerf Herder rule.
