Our North American cities' public libraries have been censoring respective city archives from cities' public libraries users, personnel and cities' public libraries unions collective bargaining labor relations advocates. Even public archives of cities' libraries themselves such as departmental curators' reports, library consultants' studies and consultants' reports have been censored. Our Boston Public Library is a model of a bad example in this regard where BPL President Bernie Margolis and his delegated so called freedom of information officer R. Kowal have used tactics of denial, delay and punitive additional fees.
How would you kind folks out there set up a GNU/Linux type of computer for a complete neophyte or for, let's say, grandma?...
The question might be reframed more properly depending on the difference between your expertise and any computer experiences of the complete neophyte.
For the type of neophyte consumer who might have considered an iMac, where can you buy a GNU/Linux computer other than Walmart already set up for the home user?...
There're many competent librarians and well run libraries. There're other librarians for whom the internet is the alternative. At our Boston Public Library improvements have happened because of the technology. BPL organizational culture is relatively more open. There's a long way to go yet for our BPL. BPL has been a good example of a bad example of North American cities' public libraries resistance to citizen participation in long range public libraries planning.

FYI, for those who are concerned about post-9/11 civil liberties:
I'm involved with a group working to make Somerville a Civil Liberties
Safe Zone --- a city which is standing up against some of the
more flagrant abuses in the PATRIOT act, Total Information Awareness,
and some of the other recent scary federal activity. Cambridge already
has a similar resolution, as do 80+ cities around the US.
Tomorrow evening, Monday April 14th, we're having out first public
meeting, and starting a petition campaign in support of the Somerville
resolution. We'll have a brief talk about the state of civil
liberties, what we've been doing, what the resolution is about, and
what you can do to help. The meeting will last under an hour, so
don't worry about things dragging on. We'll start right at 8pm and
move quickly.
If you're interested, come join us and bring other interested folks
from Somerville (and elsewhere too: they can help spread the campaign).
Date: Tomorrow, Monday April 14th
Time: 8:00pm
Place: Somerville West Branch Public Library (40 College ave, two blocks

Something more automatic is needed.
Mail in gnus would be the best way to get through messages!
Ironically, our Boston Public Library BPLers decline doing web logs that might give people a better idea of their expertise, experience and interests. Treasured BPLers talents remain relatively unknown because of the general atmosphere of discouragement, the difficulties of communicats at our city public library. Web logs give people opportunities to let others know of their expertise, experience and interests.

In 1991, a group of six young professionals met at Pizzeria Uno's in Harvard Square to share their frustrations at not being able to find meaningful volunteer opportunities that did not require an ongoing commitment - something their busy schedules would not allow them to do.
They agreed to work together to find non-profit organizations that could utilize the help of volunteers with limited and unpredictable free time. Their goal was to create a calendar of volunteer opportunities to send out to their friends who were interested in volunteering. And so, starting with a calendar of only 2 service projects, Boston Cares was founded. Today, Boston Cares' volunteer opportunities exceed 100 projects each month.
