    The worst withdrawals come from these two, plus another legal drug (or class thereof), benzodiazapines (valium family). I would rather a person use any drug, legal or illegal, other than these 3. Withdrawal from tobacco won't kill you, but the other two can.

    I call bullshit. I take benzos regularly (once every few weeks, probably). I'm not in the slightest bit physically (or mentally, really) addicted and could stop any time I wanted to; I don't want to, because they help me. I get zero withdrawal symptoms. Benzos are only a problem if you take them daily, in which case why are you doing that?

    Censorship in this land hardly surprises you, though. Especially if it can be even remotely linked with 'child porn' - all the media, BBC included, go absolutely frenzy about that.

    Because I use ad-blockers? How about people who use TIVO? I have no problem paying for stuff, and contribute to free projects, donate to Wikipedia etc. Just because I sometimes want a less-intrusive browsing experience does not make me a leech. And who gives a shit about karma anyway?

    This is from the mouth of someone who, being on Slashdot, probably whinges endlessly about any site that requires registration.

    No ads! No registration! No payment! All offer me your content for free, and I reserve the right to modify its look and feel even if the creator doesn't want me to, and to give absolutely nothing back!

    It's called freeloading, and although it's done, some of us have a problem with it.

    For example, which extensions may or may not be installed. Or what the homepage is set to. Or, disabling the Phishing Filter or enabling the Lookup-Portion of the Phishing Filter. Enable certain privacy settings by default, or disable them.

    As far as I'm concerned, these are all features. Why the fuck should a corporation choose this stuff? Judge me on my work output, not on how I use my web browser.

    Ridiculous? Hardly. To quote James Madison: "If men were angels, we would not need government. If leaders were angels, we would not need a Constitution. But men being men, we need a Constitution to restrain the leaders from causing harm to the people."

    And the constitution can be amended by those leaders. Who watches the constitution? :-)

    Unless you have experienced it directly, or have a more sophisticated understanding of it, you would have a very hard time understanding the interactions between your personal information in cyberspace and the "real world".

    When you do finally explain to this to them, their lack of privacy, and how this lack of privacy can have real negative effects on their lives.... it becomes important to them all of the sudden.

    Then explain people who, having had that explained, continue on with the 'nothing to hide, nothing to fear' mantra.

    Further it is not a bug at all. It is essentially badly designed protocol having a hole and instead of abandoning it and making users upgrade, MSFT left this hole open for 8 years.

    That's nothing. MS customers have been holding their holes open for 30 years...

    Bleh. You sound like the kind of admin I love to hate. Those policies are ludicrously restrictive. There's no point in even bothering in remote access if you're gonna cripple it like that.

    I access my company's SVN repo from home by connecting to it using SSH and port forwarding. It works fine. You're too paranoid.

    Why?

    Sorry for the simplicity there, but if your network is properly secured, that shouldn't be a problem. If it isn't, you shouldn't be connected to the internet.

    Why bother with a space ship? All children, whilst being taught about religion, should be supplied with a copy of Celestia, and made to slow zoom out until they're able to see the Milky Way and Andromeda, to get some sense of perspective.

    The UK is not the country it was 150 years ago. London today is a very multicultural place.

    That, in my experience, tends to remove people's sense of UK identity and tie them more strongly to that of their homeland. I worked with a Bangladeshi as my boss for a year in London, who was clearly second-generation or later. He still referred to Bangladesh as 'my home'.
