I don't know why you all are complaining, this is going to create a large number of jobs for people like us. Instead of the current trivial cheap efficient widespread and low error way of collecting gas tax. We are going to replace it with an inefficient, error prone, custom way to do it. And that means jobs for technology people.

It sure does sound like the worst of it is in California. While things are bad in my area (Utah), it sure does seem really bad in California. According to this article it sounds like the mismanagement of the state government will likely make it a lot worse in California before it gets any better. I wouldn't be surprised to see a monster tax increase in California. I hope I'm wrong, but this would be a huge hit to California's chance of creating new jobs.

How about a global nonprofit organization committed to helping the world's poorest youth eat and avoid dying from preventable diseases?

The difficulty with this is that most of the starvation and by extension diseases, in the world is due to political upheavals, North Koreans starve because it suits their government to let them starve. Zimbabwe starves because Robert Mugabe finds it to his political advantage to allow them to starve. (Zimbabwe is a nation blessed with an extremely fertile soil and was once known as the bread basket of southern Africa, yet now Zimbabweans starve). There are certainly many more examples of this.

So how can a global nonprofit organization solve this problem? Many already exist, and they usually end up helping the tyrant retain power. The nonprofit brings in supplies the tyrant's goons steal and the people still starve. (The taliban were notorious for this.)

Unless you are planning a nonprofit that has as it mission the overthrow of dictatorships, and the establishment of freedom in these nations.

Phoenixdsl was screwed up but telocity when I talked to them about transitioning over was so unbelievably bad and disorganized, that I took the offer to end my 2 yr contract early. Well, at least I thought I was off. Soon there aft er telocity was aquired by Hughes and then they decide that I'm really not gone. And they start charging my credit card and also backcharge me for all the monthes they had missed. I needless to say was pissed. Some 250 dollars in charges for a service that I no longer had, and had opted out of. They made it really obvious that they had no intetion of doing the right thing and refunding the money. And oh by the way we want the modem back that megapath gave you when they terminated your contract. To make a long story short, I eventually ended up having to go to my credit card company and reverse the charges. My guess is that I wasn't the only one they tried to screw.

I'm impressed, going straight from stuffer of bags to child psychologist

Proper social behavior is a learned trait and 2 year old children typically are just learning it. In particular thier communication skills are minimal. Crying is often the only way for small children to communicate thier needs. (ie You just pushed your cart by the candy aisle and didn't get them any candy) It really has more to do with teaching children coping and communication skills, versus discipline (by discipline I assume you mean punishment). I've noticed that using negative reinforment (punishment) often makes the tantrum worse. Yet using positive reinforment (praise) accomplishes much more. Realize that when you hear a child have tantrum in a public place that it isn't aimed at you personally. Just relax and don't worry about it. Some children take longer to learn it, than others. It doesn't mean they are bad parents. And it certainly doesn't merit your disdain of them.

BTW, I wouldn't put to much stock in the accounts you recieved concerning what a "wonderful" child you were. People have a tendency to remember the good and suppress the bad. I've watched mothers get on TV and say what a wonder kid thier kid was, and they had no clue that he would murder someone. And go on about what a perfect angel they were. Then later come to find out that the kid had a juvenile rap sheet the size of a novel.

It's called economy of scale and it usually kicks the shit out of mom and pop stores, whether you like it or not.

The "big picture" is that these stores thrive because they do a much better job at serving the customer. Alarmism aside, walmart isn't in going to take over the world any time soon (likely never), they have quite a bit of competition, They aren't even close to a monopoly.
