This will prove to be an important step. Replacing closed source system is going to happen piece by piece. And more important, the BIOS comes under close scrutiny of brilliant pool of open source community.
'coz learning Unix in 24 hours is a joke. You could definitely learn couple of commands like ls and cd, but that certainly does not make you a vey good Unix guru.
The post parent to you does make fun of attitude that 'something can be achieved in 24 hours'. For that matter, my friends used joke like... 'be a mother in 24 hours'.. and... 'be a graduate in 24 hours'.
I guess, the poster wanted to bring to our notice that somebody imagined few things that finally became true.
Scientists predict certain things in theorotical form and those who believe in him/her, does further research. Maxwells predictions, Einstein's prediction qualify further research in that direction, because they have scientific reasoning behind it. Poe's work hardly qualifies like that.
Science works with proof and logical explainations. Indian mythology has theory since more than 2000 years, about creation of universe. Most of the theory assumes that the universe is created by 5 fundamental things. Pruthvi(solid material), AAp(liquid), tej(energy), vaayu(gas) and akash(vacuum).
Also Kanaad had detailed explaination about atoms and related theories.
India has states that work differently. States like Kerala and Maharashtra are having close to 100% literacy. Whereas states like Bihar, UP bring the average down to 60.
But I attribute most of it to lack of time. Starting with independence just 50 years ago, lead by some leaders without good vision, lack of infrastructure, burried in corruption, accompanied by population explosion - India has come a looooooong way on the path of development. Some sections of the country are comparable to developed world.
India has 4.5 million computers. The number is not impressive when you look at total population. But most important fact is, it has reached within reach of middle class educated masses. e-banking was a pleasent surprise when I touched India this time.
While accepting all you said, I believe, more powers to younger generation will accelerate the growth.
More rationally, the divide is creation of nature which divides early catchers, and is true for everything else (even financial divide). There is always going to be gap between Pathbreakers and people who need baby-sitting.
Hmmm.. It is not too bad.
Granted, We do not like marketing tactics that kill other companies (or products). Promoting their own brand is okay, as long as it is GPLed.
For that matter, Apache and Linux "brand" have more penetration.:-D
Efforts like UL are not going to be harmful for any of the open source projects, as long as they encash the requirements of polished GUI, Office products, support etc.
Reminds me of the uproar about licensing. Without undermining the need of cash for OSS projects, can we suggest them to provide differnt packages?
Do not wish to start a flame war, but does anybody think that Apache license provides leverage here if somebody wishes to go commercial?
View please.
Not bad.
I believe all this becomes culture specific and more to do with how somebody is brought up. (Burping is an act of appreciation in some part of middle east, where as it is bad manners in some parts of the world. And trust me, having seen best of both the worlds, I can give 100 more examples)
We reject 'one size fits all'. It can be easily proven that every culture has different views.
That's shocking. Specially when a lot of noise is heard about corruption in developing countries.
The bottomline is every system is human. No culture has produced a system that can be called perfect.
That is not true. Since your post is based on piece of guesswork about India, I dont take it seriously.
The infrastructure for education is in place. It is not perfect, but it is in place. And most of this is geared to provide computer education as well.
The development of Simputer, (and supercomputer, and optical fibres, and satellites, and nuclear power stations) is part of taking the country in the rank of developed nations.
The Simputer will find local consumers, no doubt. But, if it hits American markets, it could replace lot of chinese devices.

The commercial moon mission probably is going to tell us more truth.

Does not mean that we have right to play with the eco system. But we need to keep our nerves down. Ok.
Who cares?
Phew... So many applications... Lets start a project to integrate them all and make a complete application. :-D

News suggests that iBook might be cheaper by almost 200$.
