But simply because it is EZ, it will not make things better, those lazy people who don't vote are not likely to care or think that much about it. I bet you'd only raise it by a few % in the long run. The disgusted will not vote, the wiser ignorant ones will not vote, and those who don't care will not vote. People who vote because their peers/family votes will not be pressured into going to the polls, so you lose some there too.

I don't care if you create a super OpenBSD/VA Linux hybred; I bet if you put a billion dollars into it, you could find systematic ways of cheating. It only gets much easier when 1 company has 80% of the market (diabold) or uses methods without a paper trail. (diabold)

    Lesson 2 Learn:
When doing something wrong/illegal, do it "stupidly" so when you get it, people fall for it as just an error (and then fire the honest guy for the mistakes he/she probably did not cause.)

Although, from reading lots of posts (for some reason) I would tend to say the posters in my opinion are smarter than the average person.

The REAL problem is thinking takes too much energy and time and being lazy is in human nature. People really do act like its doing push ups or something--unless they are motivated somehow.

SOME people on the other hand are in great shape when it comes to thinking. So they don't mind running a mile just to see what is down that path.

    3) there is a huge part of the OS that is open source. you get a ton of technical access even if every single detail is not documented. Apple puts a lot of effort into documenting their closed stuff, and I've often seen things left out over the years, and typically they just did not get to it, or have not yet decided on it yet and publish the docs when its ready.

Like I said, and others have said, IE/windows is closed and even locked up to an extent because they don't want you to know. Apple is very much open in comparison, and Microsoft's press release is just plain false and an attempt to justify their illegal behavor, which they continue to practice.

Where the "nut" thing comes in, is when the people of the theory go beyond what is viewed as resonable in their persistant revisioning. Science people do this stuff all the time, but nearly all of them draw the line somewhere and drop a bad theory.

Its like a chess game, where the loser just moves the king around the board refusing to give up. Thats the "Nut". The resonable person "lets it go" and admits defeat and moves on.

What you mean is the "nuts" who don't give up that can't be proven false because they never admit defeat---but they will let you prove the right. (like letting you give up chasing them around the chess board) They are problem, not the theories.

"scientific" theories is not what I'm talking about, and I'm not going to get into how I don't think there is any such thing as a "scientific" theory. Science is a philosophy for evalution of theories. Just because science can't get anywhere on some theories, does not make them "unscientific". Some theories remain unfalsifiable for decades...

Apple has to make money, so does MS. But MS is only 1 step away from killing people; while Apple is continually bordering on death according to the constant reports for the last 15 years. Perhaps the HARDWARE market needs to come back. It used to be hardware was the biz, and software was junk that came with it. Now its the opposite world. IE blows chunks and has for a while now. It was obvious to many of us that IE was not being supported well, and that it was only a matter of time before MS completely integrated IE into the OS. (Although I thought it would be years with the anti-trust keeping them on the mac. But as we have seen the weak settlement is not even being followed...and to no surprise.) As nice as the irony may seem, there is NO IRONY here. Apple has NO advantage other than its browser is based on KHTML. And all the other open source browsers are much better than IE. The disadvantage is bloated IE and small development group. (closed source) I expect Slashdot to know better, but the rest the world will fall for it and see it as "Ironic". It will also be interpreted by some as a blessing of the extreme bundling MS does. Everone else does it correctly, or more correctly-- they loosely couple their software. Even then, if the market had been truely OPEN ALL THESE YEARS and actually capitalist, which it was not, then we'd see a lot more. Open Source would be smaller, because it is largely fueled from a stagnent monopolistic market. The OS would probably be open source. Not because of market reaction to a dictator, but because that would have worked better. Standards would be better. XML would have happened sooner, or EDL would have been bigger. With MORE diversity, the apps need to work together more. We would not have WORD documents to mess with. Eventually, more open formats would have come about from having dozens of products trying to read each other's formats. Also, the hardware was the biz. Gates changed it around so the software was the biz. Its possible that things would still be the same. Hardware would be the biz, and perhaps since the software would have less value, we would have a huge open source market driven by hardware sales. Instead we have cheap hardware and expensive software. The hardware all works together on standards because of the COMPEDATIVE market. I remember when all hardware was proprietary. (So, don't complain that standards compliance is not perfect.) Point is, look at the hardware biz, and see that it was the same as software is now, and that with the open market, it got much much better and cheaper. Same goes for software.
