The problem with using php and apache2 is quite simple. most of the mpms that apache2 uses (any but prefork i think) are threaded. non-threaded code doesn't play nice with threaded code. so.... The new zend stuff in php makes it completly thread safe so that works fine. The problem is that some of the modules distributed by php.net and some (maybe most) 3rd party modules are not thread-safe, and under-high load, can cause stuff to crash and what not.
Bad idea, since many forms of cf cards have a limited number of writes that they can preform till they start to die.
you're better off looking into 2.5in hard-drives, and quieter fans (either through lowering the voltage, or just getting quiet fans.)
nah, never really expect them to read much, but heck, I thought that they might be interested in the survey so there was more of a chance of them going through it.
One in a million chance:)
Alot of these questions are very badly written. First off, I'm wandering through it, and I'm wondering if this question is referring to code that I have written, or is it code that I've just found along the way. This "survey" really needed to be beta tested (even in an irc forum or something) before being posted to slashdot. Heck, the mods coulda helped out a little and looked at the survey first...
you do realize, that windows is compiled for an x86 platform, while mac os is compiled for a ppc platform. that in itself causes incredible amounts of problems. xbox is x86 hardware. linux can run on x86 (as well as mac), thats why it can be placed on a xbox. It would need serious hardware modding (not getting around a security technique), to do that, and you would most likely be making the mac to be a x86 machine (or vice versa).
Extreamly doubtful. as far as I know, freebsd supports the linux binarys, but the kernel (where the drivers come into play) would be an entire different story.
someone might be able to code some sort of interface so that it becomes possible, but it's be quite a bit of overhead.
I think that the point wasn't to make a cpu that would become something even comparable to those that you can buy from best buy or frys. It was to see, hey can I build a cpu?
May I make a slight query here... Why the heck do you need 2ghz, and a dvd rom drive? I run a 550mghz, and I can pretty much run everything I need to do. Unless you have some 3d modeling class, then I fail to see what the heck that is all needed for... daily compilings of X maybe? I dunno...
The vertical keyboard looks nice. I just wonder how it will work since i usually rest my wrists on the table... Would be neat to try out if the price was lower:)
Actually, in the binary distros, it compiles in more options so it can be compatible for most people. Gentoo allows you to take out options that you don't need, and compile in options that are missing by default. An example of this is mplayer. On debian I have it look for infared devices on my box. On gentoo, it would have been compiled without that support, and never look for it in the first place.
Installer is being worked on.
I never see much trouble with flames, I don't use the mailing lists though. From what i have read of them though, I don't see any flaming.
I actually tried gentoo, It was taking a bit too long on the install (4 days or so), so I dropped it for a return to Debian. I've never seen any jealousy over gentoo. I recommend it to people who want debian-like, but want more recent software / i686 compiled.
And I thought that this whole issue (GFDL) was being discussed some 6 months ago or something...
Your best bet is to pay some money. Get transgaming winex and get the codeweavers stuff. That way you can still use shockwave. Flash has been ported, but i haven't seen a sockwave one. Java is simply a pain:)
Guy who came to my house to set up comcast cable was neat. He basically set it up for the one computer witout touching any cd-roms. He took out the package for the stuff and just gave it to me and said that it was basically worthless and will probably break the computer. got it working in 1 minute in linux too. added the nic to the kernel. ran pump -i eth0. worked perfectly.:)
No distro can add the Nvidia drivers becasue nvidia won't let them. so nyah!/etc/fstab doesn't have to be edited if a user remembers to add them by clicking add previously initialized partitions.
cd-rw is as easy as editing lilo and adding append="hd?=ide-scsi". not that hard for a newbie? It's in like every install manual in existance.
printing is a pain:)
so... because "Most" people use kde / gnome, we should default to that... Hey, wait! I use blackbox! Most people I've talked to DON"T use kde or gnome. There are a lot of windows managers out there. lets compare others to kde / gnome. It might be even, or we might have more for those others. But it's not too hard to run a apt-get install kde or gnome now is it?
groupadd i belive adds users to group, not to sure personally.
Debian doesn't start off perfectly, but once it runs, thats all it does.
Which it should, since it is a multi-user system, and the home directory can span multiple machines.
Although, it's not that hard to goto the paplication library or library in general and delete it's folder.
peer pressure
They could just, you know, look at the older articles, and.. scan then, which takes all of, say, 3 minutes?

But the way the fsf sees linking, it does matter.
gmudix is the best one that i've found for a linux environment. zmud for windows.

basically, everyone but us americans do the date correctly. that format is dd/mm/yy

The same article is on the front page for god's sake...

for the "only" person able to figure out that piece of code. If i was him, I'd invite the guy who referred him over for dinner :)
Debian based = *.deb files. dselect / dpkg / apt-get is your package manager.

I never agreed to any eulas when i usually download a file. Only if you create the file are you subject to an eula.
now what was i going to say here... oh yeah.
