    The constitution guarantees your right to parody.

    I think what is really happening here is that EA and Rockstar are in the same business, and are just being polite to one another. It isn't in either companies' interest to get into any form of legal battle - that would just make the public's perception of "mature" video games even worse.

    So, Apple is supposed to start supporting a file system which nobody but some research geeks use - but they STILL refuse to fully support NTFS, which half of the disk drives on the planet are using. What kind of sense does that make?

    (For those living in a closet: MacOSX supports reading NTFS, but not writing).

    If Apple would stop being so dysfunctional and start to play nicely with others, maybe it would get invited to more offices.

    A judge specifically told the county to retrieve backup data from the machines. The county not only totally ignored her request - they acted in such a way that the data she requested was permenantly destroyed. How is that not contempt of court?

    I'm used to government inaction or incompetence affecting elections - it happens all the time - but when government officials purposely act contrary to a judge's order, that brings corruption to an entirely new level.

    So, they ban wireless computer mice - but not laptops, which all have 802.11 wireless capabilities, and many of which also have bluetooth?


    They should ban transmission of RF - so your laptop/cellphone is fine as long as you turn off the radio part. I'm not sure if the DS or PSP can disable it's wireless capability but if it can - then you should be able to play games while on board, just not interact with other users.


    Amazing how people in government/management are all technically inept, isn't it?

    With Bully, Jack Thompson had a sliver of a case - that children in a private school might buy the game and start emulating it in real life by beating up their classmates.

    Similarly, he might have a case with GTA:Vice City, where people in Las Vegas might buy the game and then start randomly shooting people and stealing cars.

    But Halo 3? What, the astronauts on the International Space Station might play the game, and then start shooting each other in real life?? And even if they do, how is that a public nuisance?

    If he was under arrest before being tazered, what was the charge?

    If he was not under arrest, how can they now charge him with "resisting arrest"?

    Philosophically speaking, how can you be arrested solely for resisting arrest??

    You don't need to ever update your iPhone - if it works, leave it alone. Updates aren't forced on you.

    And if you ever do want an update (e.g. it fixes a bug that bothers you, or it adds new functionality) then reactivating the phone takes a very short amount of time. As TFA explains, most of the time spent for the mod is adding wires - once that's done the rest is a simple download procedure.

    This architecture might be good for server applications - i.e. lots of instances of a single-CPU task.

    However, it doesn't work that well for large apps that get parallelized across multiple CPUs. It turns out that most code, and most compilers, are good at splitting tasks in two - or in powers of two - so having three CPUs is no faster than having two.

    Once again, politicians prove they don't understand the internet.....

    The V-Chip has two components: the transmitter end, which sends the program rating embedded inside the television signal; and the receiver end, where the V-Chip decodes the rating, and enables/disables viewing of that signal.

    For an internet V-Chip rating system to work, every web site would need to embed a rating tag on every page... which they would have zero interest in doing. Even if Congress mandates it in the USA, foreign web sites are still readily available. (And if the V-Chip blocks unrated web sites, everyone can just stick the "G-for all" tag inside of their porn). Plus, I'd bet that various Russian anonymous-browsing web services will spring up that change all US web site tags to G....

    The SEC has very strict rules about the public comments an officer of a corporation can make, particularly in the period between the end of a financial quarter and the public release of that quarter's results. If any of his postings fell within that period, they are illegal.

    And as a friend of mine who had dealings with them points out: the SEC make the CIA look like nice, friendly people.

    Usually a distro is started because existing drivers don't fill a particular need.

    My point exactly. Instead of fixing the problem, people start their own distro, confusing the marketplace.

    Now I've settled on Ubuntu, because it has the look and feel that I think a computer should have, and because it works for me.

    So what's wrong with having one distro, with a user dialog during installation asking what look/feel the user would like?? Or even better, allowing the user to select the look and feel they'd like at any time with a control panel, instead of having to wipe their computer and reinstall??

    Why is there more than one linux distribution in the first place?

    This is one of the most confusing things to new users. If they want to buy Windows, they go to the store and buy Windows. It isn't available from 17 different companies; only Microsoft sells Windows. There are a few versions (home, professional, etc) but the installation/upgrade user experience is common across all of them.

    Imagine if all of the programmer time and effort that goes towards packaging and installation programs for the various Linux distributions was spent on something important, like fixing bugs.....

    A better alternative for photo printing is to have prints made at a one-hour shop, like Target or Walgreens.


    That very much depends on exactly what your pictures contain - particularly if you are in a fundamentalist religious country like the USA. Any picture containing nudity (especially of children) will earn you a visit from the authorities, no matter how innocent. I'd rather not go to prison for taking snaps of baby's first bath.

    The employees have minimal incentive to really innovate.

    Any employee with a brain and/or an innovative idea already moved to Google. So even if there were huge incentives to innovate, their ability to do so is somewhat limited.

    This sounds like a very bad idea; TFA is practically begging for Microsoft to file DMCA legal action against Ubuntu.

    They

    • Accessed a proprietary server
    • Had no authorization to do so
    • Bypassed all access controls
    • Reverse engineered the validation handshaking mechanism

    Episode two is more than just new maps. They're thoroughly revising the core game engine (better rendering, better physics, better support for multi-core processors). There are also AI changes to support cooperative game play - in other words, instead of Alex just following you around and giving you hints, she will actually help you perform tasks. The nice thing with how Valve/Steam works is that once the core game engine updates are done, they will allow any game to use them, not just HL2.


    The core engine changes also allow things like the portal gun in Portals - which is a separate third party game, but which needed changes from Valve to work correctly.


    In the meantime, if all you want is new maps, fire up Hammer and make some of your own!

    So, let me get this straight - all the cafe owner had to do was to say "that's okay, I don't mind people using my network from outside". That would make it an authorized use - and so the crime would disappear, and this poor innocent guy would have a clean record.


    But he didn't. It would have cost him nothing, but he let a fellow citizen get convicted for nothing.


    Boy, that really doesn't sound like good advertising to me....
