Isn't this the great Slashdot disconnect? Everyone moans that musicians should give away their music and "earn a living like the rest of us" by performing. Yet, here we are griping that the performance of a work of text should not be protected either. So authors only get money from the sale of text and musicians only get money from performing? Or is it that the book is the performance? If that is so, should we outlaw libraries? I have to admit I come down on the author's side of this.

I will go further to add that I bet they shell out more to Adobe for software in a year then to MS. He not only has to get them to write off MS but get every IT person to replace their skill set. THAT is where the real cost is. "Switch to F/OSS it is cheaper!" "It will cost 10 years worth of MS money to retrain even our server guys - no thanks" Yeah, yeah, I know REAL IT guys can turn on a dime to any technology. A college is a ship though, and they don't turn on a dime.

  18. Re:I'm selling a bridge! Cheap!! on Fusion-Fission System Burns Hot Radioactive Waste · · Score: -1, Flamebait
Strawman much? The counter to all of your 'Everything's are worse than what you rail against. You have an opinion and feel the public should share it. You make a strawman that everyone that doesn't agree with you agrees with Oprah or Paris Hilton. The sorry state of science education that you bemoan starts with your post. You cherry pick topics (ricin) that are absurd to make your point.

Everything that's "natural" is good. (Umm... what about ricin? Perfectly respectable "natural" product...)

Yeah, we get it, ricin is poison. Want this Alar sprayed Apple? No? But the Natural people are crazy right? Go ahead take a bite - they are silly, I mean the company that makes it says it is OK. I mean they are scientists right? All one big brotherhood. The guys at Phillip Morris didn't lie did they? They were scientists right?

Everything "nuclear" is bad. (The parent is potentially a good counterexample).

Yep the public hates them. With good reason whether you want to see it or not. If the wind towers blow over and the solar panels fry and the coal plant blows up - the worst they got is no electricity. A nuke plant goes (and it has happened twice) and you get what? We spent 20+ years making sure the public was scared of nukes, now you deride them because they are scared of them. Nice. Go do a bit of work about how Chernobyl went down and what happened to the citizens of it during the meltdown. If people are skittish they have good reason to be. ALL of them were built to "never fail", yet two have. Want to convince the public? Walk over to a holding tank of waste and lick the containers. In other words you are going to have to put up or shut up. And show it on TV.

Everything "renewable" is good. (Using corn-based ethanol as a fuel source is a really bad idea ... there are better sources that have less environmental and economic impact).

Again, this is what they were taught, and so you call them ignorant. Five years ago corn was the gift of God to power. Now it is realized that this isn't so true, give them a bit, they are coming around on this one. At the same time they are being sold on switchgrass as the same thing. So is it renewable? Is it a bad thing?

Again I fault your science education for lacking the ability to realize what are baseless generalizations and what are statistics and what are facts. If there are nitwits out there, part of the problem are people like yourself that call them that and walk away. Try helping instead of bitching.

And FYI - (one of) My Degree is in Botany, my undergrad work was in Plant Systemics (fungi mostly), and I spent years growing (and evolving!) germs for a living.

As an Admin at a college, what you are told and what the Network guys are giving you are very separate things. Plus with 101 bottle necks between you and every other router, yeah, you ain't getting that speed, ever. Plus damn near no one provides that level of upload, so you are doubly FUBARed.

With a few wire switches (and I am talking laid cable/glass - literally plug in/plug out) I could pull GigE to my desk ... and I still wouldn't get anything because no one is pushing that hard. With *only* GigE to our campus, we have *never* even hit 10% of capacity, ever. At the same time I have pulled 16M/s from Sun and the U of MN. much better than your 12M (theoretical) home service.
