I lived in Las Cruces, NM for a few years. So let me put it this way...
noise pollution : No one is going to notice.. well, no HUMAN is going to notice. Between TorC (as everyone calls is) and Las Cruces.. there is a whole lot of NOTHING. Just miles and miles and miles of desert. Well, there are a couple of very small communities if you stay next to the interstate.
traffic problems : Non issue there is hardly any traffic now.. the road would be a little busier because peopel would have to live in TorC or Las Cruces that is a plus for both cities.
money that the populace argues would be better spent elsewhere : HAH! I take it you have never seen the area... Go 4 minutes outside the city limits of Las Cruces and you are IN the third world country within the USA. This will pump millions of MUCH NEEDED money into the area.
They have been waiting 10+ years for this. It is nice to see it finally happening. One section of Las Cruces even split off a few years back (~ '96-'97).. became incorperated and called temselves "spaceport City" because they were dead sure that a spaceport would be built by '99. By late '98 and early '99 they were out of money (they had to make a lot of improvements to fit the terms of becoming a city) and the residents dumped the idea and voted to become a 'burb of Las Cruces again and forget the whole incorperation thing.
I see this more for a gamer that goes to a lot of Lan Parties... easier to take this than your desktop, monitor, keyboard, mouse, power cords, network cables.....
Other than that... a paperweight you spent WAY too much for.
While this is an interesting writeup... lack of REAL information AND LINKS makes this kinda pointless (At least he didn't link to his blog that has the same writeup)
Yep. It is in there with adsense. I seem to average 1 convert a day. But that makes up for some days where adsense can have like 30 click throughs and my cut of it is only like $0.20..
Hmm, I downloaded 5.10 on Friday.. and it was the official release not a Release Canidate.
Installed quite nicely.. and after some tricky googling.. I found the right information to setup X so that it would work with more than 640x480 res on my Toshiba Tecra laptop.
The only issue left is that it did not recognise the wireless card I have installed.. so I can't put it on the network yet.
OnStar would "ping" the car for the information (BTW, this isn't "automatic" you can say if you want it done or not) and the car would send the information back. If something comes up as an issue, OnStar will call you and inform you.
The car is not sending out signals... other than GPS. So, they are calling the "car's number" to get any error codes.
And no, OnStar people are not calling and listening to you, it is ILLEGAL to do and you WILL be fired the instant you are found out. (I have heard of 10 people fired because they were doing that.. the only reason they applied and got jobs was to spy on people they knew.. OnStar screening has improved since then)
All you would get is a 500101 or similar code. So, you need "the book" to read the codes. "The Book" is about 700$.. which is why you "need" to go to the dealer to have the dianogstic done.
You can buy the reader yourself, you can get "the book" as well (shh, you can find most the code and their meaning online).
I beleive some of the cars with the onboard displays can do this as well... I can't afford one of those cars so can't verify that.
And Europe and Asia and South America... it is not JUST the US people. Everyone has to own up to their mistakes. It is easy to point fingers when your blind to your own faults.
44 to 88 pounds to just power a bunch of stuff... that is about the max a person can carry... what about.. or say.. FOOD, Shelter, medical supplies, ect?
Remember, you have to carry EVERYTHING you need when in the wild. What are you going to do? Hire a shirpa that will live on nuts and berries to carry the stuff you need to LIVE?
Sorry, I am NOT impressed by this. Let me know when it is down to 3-4lbs and no chance of it being broken if you fall or drop your pack. Then I will be impressed. You can get a hand generator to power/recharge that same stuff and it is 2lbs or less.
A lot of wasted weight and the people that this "would" be targeted for know it and will just move on to better options. You go LIGHT, not HEAVY you go RUGGED not "If this tiny part breaks, I am screwed!".
As this is now.. it is doomed for the land of the lost and forgotten.
People just keep overlooking the better, World Wind. Sure, no high res outside the US (yet) but how about almost realtime Radar and forcast data? (Press F5 to get latest image)
Hmm, I'll be dead and burried and my kids will have grand kids before private companies get around to getting the "last mile" broadband to my location.
I am litterly, 3/4mile away from ANY kind of wired broadband. "Maybe" will have a wireless option.. depends on where they stick the tower.
I would rather have the government putting a little pressure on the big providers to expand the networks than wait for what will probably never come.
Most common use we have found for people that use World Wind. "Hey! Look I found ___________!" Even have a hotspots website setup at Worldwindcentral.com
What makes it nice using World Wind is that it is starting to bring together a few different sources of data into one interface.
Now.. if we can just get Europe to forget about their pocketbooks and open up some imagery for free use...
1) 1.3 has been released in early march
2) An update 1.3.1 is in the testing phases but can be downloaded so you can get some big improvements from the 1.3 release.
3) Servers should be able to withstand the/. this time... You brought JPL to it's knees last time.
4) High-rez, close up images are of US locations only (we get asked that 30 times a day..)
5) New NLT images of LandSat are color improved and cover the entire globe down to 10,000 meters.

How about some links to real reviews?

Hmm... it's gonna make the meeting with HR awkard this afternoon..
You're not going to get rich quick :)
Though, the chance to meet Count Dracula though....
The only way I can see increasing my pay is to leave this job for another. And this is NOT a good market now to do that.
Would LOVE a 2% or 3% raise once a year or so...
If your in Toledo, OH. It's is on I-280 the exit just before the Turpike entrance.

Like in gmail? That is a huge plas and keeps my inbox much cleaner. The MSN looks nice... but still doesn't have what I want/need.
Lived there 7 years and finally moved because .. well.. living there SUCKS! And now all this cool stuff shows up!
Crap.. my scarcasm detector just exploded....
I have a Geode 300mhz SBPC myself.. with a 1Gig CF card running DSL Linux on it. But it is in a big, bulky industrial case right now.
It runs nice, if not a little sluggish with some larger aplications.
I like the case AMD is showing... I wonder if I can make something similar.
Look at coverage maps for the last few years. Note how they have just barely moved further out from where they were 3-5 years ago?
Instead of "Hey, you can do 'this' now." How about some more "Hey, we just added another 500sq miles of coverage this month!"
You will impress me more with COVEREAGE than cheap tricks. :\
(Goes back to browsing on his MAX 24K modem connection.. no wait.. I lucked out 26K today.)

Radar Image from WW
If the data is out there, it can be formatted and brought in. And now that NWS has this.. I shall be making an add-on for WW now.

1) Release 360 for Holiday Season
2) ?
3) Profit!
4) RE-Release 360 Later with HD-DVD
5) MORE Profit!
All the more reason I WON'T be getting a 360 till about a year after release. Heck, I didn't get an X-Box till about 7 months ago.
What could be a better use of that money to open up more imagery of Europe and Asia for ALL to see.

Hybrids are nice... but they are only a TINY stepping stone. And NOTHING near a solution that will lower the dependance on gasoline.
Fule Cell cars are where the technology is going towards, and hopefully in 10 years will be economical enough to be mass produced.
