    Enterprise integration with Building Automation Systems is a hot topic. All your major IT integrators are exploring this while the BAS community is actively working on web services standards. Google oBIX and BACnet Web Services. The process control industry also has OPC which is often used in buildings too; OPC is working on their web services spec called Unified Architecture.

    Wal-Mart and HP are rumored to be coming out with a $399 laptop this holiday season, and it actually sounds sweet (fyi, don't let AMD Sempron scare you, it is the Thoroughbred Athlon XP). You'll probably need to buy Windows seperately. Google has more details.

    I have to agree with the parent msg, contracting is wonderful.

    Get a tax guy like he said. Important note, you have to guestimate taxes quarterly. As long as you guestimate 115% of the taxes you paid last year, there will be no penalty (double-check this, it's been a few years). What this means is that in the first year you can put a butt-load of money into some investment (play it safe, it isn't yours).

    A new TC has been formed at OASIS for this very purpose: Open Building Information Exchange.

    Control systems such as LonTalk and BACnet are pretty unusable by enterprise class developers. However the data contained in these systems is extremely beneficial to enterprise IT.

    I've run my line out to my line in and record 2+ hour streams with it. Last time I looked (years ago), I couldn't find any free recorders that recorded to file.
